I am not an expert audiophile, but I can try to be (lol):
First impressions:
- Excellent sound. Bass is emphasized, but not overbearing like the beats were. Mids and Highs are I listen to anything from Pop, Rock, or EDM to classical music and it sounds beautiful for every song I've listen to. Of course, high quality music is a must I should mention. No headphones on earth can substitute/fix a horribly compressed song file.
- Fits very comfortably. The cups encompass my ears perfectly and feel very soft. My head does not feel squished, and I feel like I could wear them for hours on end (which I plan on to).
- The volume is perfect, to me, having the volume at 1/4 to 1/2 is just right.
- The ears fold up, which makes these super easy to transport if you ever feel like taking them off
- This earphone is super stylish! My friends are jealous already!
I don't see any cons to be honest. I know some reviews have mentioned the carrying case is "not protective enough" but let's face it. As a person who will be using these daily, I know I won't be putting these in a pouch to carry them around often. They seem sturdy enough to be handled and can take a beating (not that I'm going to do that). The way I'll be transporting these will be on top of my head or around my neck... which would be hard to do if they were in a pouch. If you're super concerned about protecting them, investing $20-30 in a hard case shouldn't be too much of an issue, if you're already willing to spend $250 on a pair of headphones.
Aesthetics:
Sennheiser definitely went after that urban, Beats crowd with these cans. They're a younger more hip looking can than Sennheiser has put out. Dare I say they're fashionable? They definitely look great in person.
Build Quality:
The Urbanite XL are fantastically built. They are extremely durable and I felt more than comfortable throwing them in my backpack and tossing it around without worrying about the cans breaking. The headband is very flexible and seems like it should withstand daily use with ease. Not to mention you get that added benefit of folding cups.
Comfort:
The cups are extremely comfortable, not quite as comfortable as the Momentum 2.0 or 1.0 but still more comfortable than say some of the Beyers or Audiotechnicas. I will say this, unlike the Momentums,I found my ears getting a bit warm over prolonged use during my flights with these cans. I had to take them off and rest my ears every so often. That being said, they are most definitely a high quality can with some of the most comfortable cups around. The cups feel similar to a memory foam pillow or mattress.
Sound:
Here's why I exchanged these for the Momentums. The Urbanite's have a great sound to them for bassheads. I, however, tend to listen to more jazz and string music. The Urbanites are definitely not the optimal phones for this type of music. The highs just didn't come through that well and the lows just felt overpowering. When I listened to rap, trance or rock? These headphones were much better than the Momentums. They were extremely clear and the bass was thunderous. Hell, for the price range I don't think there's a better pair of cans for bass-heavy music that don't need an amp. And if you're even considering Beats by Dre instead of these, I say you should buy these just to try them out for a week and you won't even look at Beats again.
Bottom Line:
If you're the type of person that listens to bass-heavy music most of the time, you cannot go wrong with getting a pair of Urbanites. Hell the fact that they're only about $100 right now seems like an even bigger reason to check these out. They're durable, nice looking, and have a bass that kicks you in the ears like a horse. Before even looking at Beats, check these out. Then check Beats out. Then you'll kick yourself for even considering buying a pair of Beats.
Top reviews from other countries
Overall solid headphones for the price.
