The affordable QUALITY 4K monitor we've been waiting for (UPDATED FEB. 2017)
    5 Stars
The affordable QUALITY 4K monitor we've been waiting for (UPDATED FEB. 2017)
This is the 4K monitor I have been waiting for. Affordable and quality. Be aware, there's 3 types of the monitor: one with a Sliver stand and white back, one with a black stand and black back (this one), and one with a black stand that pivots and rotates with a black back (the other two versions are sold on other sites, not Amazon).I've been searching for a true 4K monitor that suits my needs (I'm a video production solo gig) and this monitor is it. I have the 2013 Mac Pro since it was released and have been using the Dell P2815Q monitor (a overly priced half-baked TN panel 4K monitor), this monitor is light years ahead of quality, viewing angles, overall color, and brightness compared to that Dell. This feels like a $1000 monitor for half the price. Now since Apple first showcased the Mac Pro, they said you can run 3 4K monitors and I've searching for the right monitor that I can do with for a low price without sacrificing quality. This monitor is my answer. Currently I have 1, but soon my dream of having that infinitely famous triple monitor setup will happen with this. Also fun fact: 3 of these monitors equals the price of Dell's 5K monitor... Now which one would you really choose? I know.Look here's the bottom line: If you've been looking for an quality IPS 4K monitor with accurate color, great brightness, thin bezels (man there thin), and for a low price, you've found the answer.February 2017 Update:Display has been going great, no issues after 7 months, however...Since December 2016, seeing LG's new 5K UltraFine Monitor for Mac made me wonder what the difference was between this display compared to the 5K one. Oh man. BIG DIFFERENCE.When comparing LG's 4K display against the LG 5K UltraFine display, you immediately see a difference. Brightness is one big standout (the 5K display is 500 nits, I imagine the 4K one is 300, maybe 250 nits), as well I noticed that this monitor is on the cooler side of the colors while the UltraFine 5K display is warmer (along with being so much brighter). HOWEVER, I was very surprised to say that in terms of pixel density, viewing angles, and overall picture quality... the 5K and 4K display are much more similar then one would think (considering this display is $499 while the 5K one is $974).Please take a look at the picture with two young men for a pretty good understanding of what I'm talking about. In the picture the LG 4K display is on the LEFT, while LG's 5K UltraFine display is on the RIGHT. Notice the loss of shadows and some color on the 4K panel. Conclusion:I went ahead and sold my LG 4K monitor and replaced it with the 5K UltraFine Monitor, mostly because of how it works so much better with the Mac's (the 4K display would take a solid 12-15 seconds to boot up in order to long in... LG's 5K display is instant once you tap on that keyboard). I still recommend this display because of its cheaper price and still solid IPS panel! However, if you want the best display for your Mac, LG's new 5K UltraFine monitor is the way to go. I'm still going to keep this review at 5 stars because of having no issues and how good of a deal this display is. (also I should mention that regardless of it's horrible 3 star rating on Apples website, the 5K display works perfectly fine with my Mac Pro and 2016 MacBook Pro 15 inch... No issues as other people are having)

Update 2: It is now February 2019. This is still kicking strong. Any previous issues I had are non-existent. Changing it to a 5-star review.

Update: I ordered this monitor in September of 2016. It is now March 2017 and its still awesome. I am knocking off a star however because of a new issue I ran into. I bought the new MacBook Pro 2016 with touchbar last month and started having issues getting it to output 4k native resolution to the monitor. My MacBook can power a 5k display so it should easily handle 4k. I tried all sorts of adapters and cables and tested them with my desktop too. This monitor should support 4k at 60 HZ with any of the of ports it has (2 HDMI, 1 Displayport). Turns out the issue was this monitor after all. One of the HDMI ports has limited functionality. I cannot get the resolutions I want with my MacBook Pro on that one HDMI port. My desktop seems to have flickering issues with that port as well. The DisplayPort hooked up to my desktop performs beautifully at 4k at 60 hz and my MacBook hooked up with Apple's multi port adapter works well at 4k 30 hz on the other HDMI port. Looks like I need to contact LG to see if this is intended or my monitor is in fact a defect.

Do you like 4k? Have you tried 4k? Have you done months of research and waited for that perfect monitor for your clean, slick desk? Look no further because this is the one for you. My goodness. Watch CALBUCO 4K and VORTICITY 4k on youtube. Pay attention to the 4k glory. Then if you can get past that, look at the color accuracy and contrast. Then realize that at 27 inches, if you have a modest desk, it is going to cover your a large part of your field of view. Honestly I shouldn't really have to preach much else past that. Yea its got a very slight light bleed issue on the top left (on mine) but let's be real, what IPS monitor doesn't have light bleed. And most have it really bad. People have been complaining about the stand being flimsy. Yes, if you shake your desk and are constantly banging on your desk like a gorilla, then your monitor will shake. I have a standard metal and glass table that's no sturdier than a camping tent, and the monitor does not shake anymore than a camera on a steady gimbal. The stand looks great even though it's plastic and cable management is a breeze. I am using this with DisplayPort on a Asus Strix GTX 1070, but have also tested it with the intel integrated graphics (i7 4771 3.5ghz) and in both cases performance is great. Haven't tried out games at 4k but have tried at 1080P and at 1440P and the monitor has excelled in all genres that I have tried with my GTX 1070. Long story short: I waited nearly two years watching for 4k monitors before upgrading from my Samsung 1080P TN panel from 2008. I looked through all the reviews. I looked at all the prices. This LG monitor is the best thing that I could ever have spent my money on besides my GTX 1070. For the price, nothing comes close and frankly, it beats out the competition with its capabilities. 4k or nothing from here on out and this thing is a sure-fire decision.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best and cheapest 4k monitors around.

So I was on the look for a decent 4k monitor for quite some time. Did lot of searching and found out almost all the 4k monitors sold in India are very expensive. When we compare it with the 4k tvs available it makes no sense to buy a monitor for such prices. But hey a monitor is a monitor period. I don’t think you can use a 50inch tv as a desktop comfortably atleast for me. Apart from LG and Samsung there are no other brands which come under this price range. I was keen on a Dell or Benq but both of them are even twice as expensive as the LG and Samsung. The Samsung one comes with a TN panel which according to online reviews is not so bright as the IPS panel in the LG. So it was no brainier and i ordered this monitor.

Coming to the product, first of all it doesn’t comes with speakers, USB port or even a remote (mind you even some of the full HD monitors half the price of this comes with such features) so yeah some of you might wanna consider that before buying this monitor. For me I just want the 4k display and that was the priority. Also the next model 27ud88 with usb c is like 20k more expensive than this one and it doesn’t made much sense to chose it just for the USB port.
Talking about the display it’s amazing to look on! I mean I’m no expert with high end monitors but be it movies or games, the content is so great to look on. The viewing angles are extremely good and the display is super bright. In my opinion if you are chosing a monitor above 24inch, it has to be 4k. Trust me it’s so beautiful to look at it! I’ve been seeing more details in every games and it makes me want to play more. Same with the movies. I’m so glad that I invested in this monitor and i feel like it’s worth for what it costs.
P.S some users were complaining about backlight bleeding but so far I’m not seeing anything on mine. Everything looks good and crisp. Also make sure your computer/graphics card supports 3840*2160 resolution. I have a gtx 970 paired to i5. Yeah all the games run super smooth on 1080p. When I chose 4k resolution on games I’m seeing frame rate drops, guess I need to reduce the graphics settings for 4k but anyway I’m very happy with games running on 1080p as everything looks amazing. Maybe for 4k gaming graphics cards like gtx 1080ti is required. After connecting the monitor, i had to install the driver from the CD which came along. Then only Windows was able to recognise the monitor and I could chose 60hz in display option.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product and delivery. No speakers on this monitor

Great display worth the price. Prompt and well packaged delivery of product.

One thing to note is that this monitor does not have an audio output even though the Macbook detected it as an audio source. I wasted hours trying to figure that out and additionally had several LG technicians come home to resolve the matter, only to realize that there is no audio. There was no information about this online and I had to figure out the hard way.

Additionally the True Color software that comes on the accompanying LG cd, appears to the for PC's as it didn't work with the Macbook Pro. Something the technicians told me as well.

Hope these tips save other buyers time.

4.0 out of 5 stars back light bleed issue
Reviewed in India on August 12, 2017
This monitor is pretty good and works perfectly with a gtx 1080 but the piece I received was defective (backlight bleeding from top left corner) so ensure that you monitor doesn't suffer from a backlight bleeding issue which can be pretty annoying when you are watching a movie in a dark room. Other than backlight bleeding this monitor was perfectly able to handle arma 3 easily which is one of the worst optimized game ever made, Watchdogs 2 in 4k with gtx 1080 gave me 40-50 fps with ULTRA settings, Ghost recon wild lands was able to give 40 fps in 4k. Also, buy this monitor only if you have a graphic card supporting 4k or at least 2k display or else this monitor will be a waste of money if you are going to use it with 1080p display.

NOTE: This monitor doesn't come with USB port and speakers (Your OS might consider that this monitor supports sound)

UPDATE: I have contacted LG customer support before returning this and was told that they can't fix a backlight bleeding issue and backlight bleeding issue in this model is very uncommon (2015 monitors were infamous for that issue) so don't compromise if you even see a single spot of backlight bleeding issue.

UPDATE 2: Received a perfect replacement! happy with my purchase.
