Achieve authenticity.

Have you ever felt you’re not getting through to the person you’re talking to, or not coming across the way you intend? You’re not alone.

That’s the bad news. But there
is something we can do about it. Heidi Grant Halvorson, social psychologist and bestselling author, explains why we’re often misunderstood and how we can fix that.

Most of us assume that other people see us as we see ourselves, and that they see us as we truly are. But neither is true. Our everyday interactions are colored by subtle biases that distort how others see us—and also shape our perceptions of them.

You can learn to clarify the message you’re sending once you understand the lenses that shape perception:

•
Trust. Are you friend or foe?
•
Power. How much influence do you have over me?
•
Ego. Do you make me feel insecure?

Based on decades of research in psychology and social science, Halvorson explains how these lenses affect our interactions—and how to manage them.

Once you understand the science of perception, you’ll communicate more clearly, send the messages you intend to send, and improve your personal relationships. You’ll also become a fairer and more accurate judge of others. Halvorson even offers an evidence-based action plan for repairing a damaged reputation.

This book is not about making a good impression, although it will certainly help you do that. It’s about coming across as you intend. It’s about the authenticity we all strive for.

I'm a reader of psychology books as a hobby - mostly because people have continually fascinated me throughout the course of my whole life. I originally checked this book out of the library and later decided I wanted to own it because it was so amazingly useful and simply useful.
Part of what makes the tips in this book so useful is at the end of every chapter, there's a "key takeaway" synopsis. You really could merely read the "key takeaway" sections if you didn't have the time to read the rest of the book. But there's wonderful stories and anecdotes that drive the points home.
This book describes the point of view of others (as their "lenses" they see you through,) which is quite a useful way to regard people without judging their attitude to be good or bad. The author has you assuming the point of view of others in very specific and useful ways too - especially the "promotion-prevention" lens that involves everyone's attitude toward risk.
I found the most useful chapters were the last two. "Correcting Bad Impressions & Overcoming Misunderstandings" and "Becoming a Better Judge of Others."
I don't know if you've ever read the book by Lee LeFever about "The Art of Explanation." "Noone Understands..." uses principles from LeFever's book - which makes it deceptively simplified. The impression you get as you read it is..."I already knew that!" What this means is the author is brilliant at simplifying her explanations!
All in all - it's among the top ten of the best psychological books I've ever read - and I've read thousands of 'em and learned at least thirty different personality systems!

"No one understands you" is a nice little book about how people perceive you, why they do, and what you can do about it. Its goal is to be a practical book for you to improve how people perceive. The tips are not based on the author's experience but are opinions based on research studies. The book is well written, easy-to-read and, I think it succeeded in its goal. If you are feeling misunderstood or are suffering from bad first impressions, this book might give you some practical advice.

The book consists of four parts. The first part explores why we are often perceived differently than we intend to. How do people actually make their first impression and why is it so hard to change that first impression again.

The second part explores three 'lenses' which is the metaphor used for how people change their perception of you based on the situation. For example, the first lens is the trust lens. When you meet some, do you trust him? Where is this initial trust based on? How do people make this decision and why? The other two lenses explored are the power lens and the ego lens.

The third part looks at particular personalities and how they provide an individual lens. This is a short chapter and consists only of two dimensions of personality types. The last part contains the final practical advice chapter and a conclusion...

The book was an easy read, practical, and enjoyable. Most of the book is a summary of a lot of other material out there, some conclusions on that, and what you can do with it. If you have read other work on the subject then this book is not likely to give you much news. If you haven't, this is a pretty good starting book. Because of that, I was doubting between 3 and 4 stars but I'll go with 4. Pretty ok.

This book is about the way people perceive you, which in turn also enlightens you on how you perceive others. The book goes into detail about the various shortcuts people consciously and unconsciously take in forming their impressions of you. It describes how there are 2 levels of perception, the first level begins with the almost entirely automatic assessment that occurs on first impression, and then if interactions continue, there may be a 2nd level where people refine their perceptions of you. The 2nd level is your only hope if you form a bad first impression. Readers of "Thinking, Fast and Slow" will recognize this concept.

The most helpful parts of the book for me were the sections that talk about people's various filters or "lenses" that color their perceptions of you. For instance, there is the ego lens, which can cause people to see others with more talent or abilities as a threat. Then there is the power lens, which can cause people to totally disregard you and your rights. There is too much here to list every detail. The bottom line of it all, is that you are not given an impartial, unbiased, fair shake by anyone you meet, not likely anyways. This is could help you (the "halo effect") or hinder you, and this book will help you understand how all this works.

One final thing I will say about this book, which may be more important than anything else, is that the author relies on peer reviewed research to come to her conclusions. She is a genuine expert on what science really says about this topic. What this means is that this book is not a waste of time like so much of the self-help literature out there. Everything in here is supported by evidence, and the book gives many of the interesting details of how this research was conducted.

5.0 out of 5 stars And I thought I knew myself
Reviewed in Canada on November 4, 2019
A great book that self-examines nearly everything we think we know about ourselves, but fail to take into account how others really see us. Another great book for those starting out in the work force. A revised take on the primacy effect and confirmation bias, interpretations that need to be logically examined instead of our quick automatic awareness that can be misleading at best, injurious at worst. Read this book and be shocked at how wrong we often are.

Great book it does have so much information that I never come across before in any other book before. It does help to breakdown what is the impact we have in other people and also how we process other people behaviour perceptions. It is all about perception and this helps to understand how to identify influencers and how to manage that.

An absolute waste of time. I seldom buy this kind of book but the subject-matter was intriguing. The author ackonwledges it herself: she didn't know what book to write next, and it was her husband, who never reads those books, who gave her the subject of thisnone, sayingbthat would be one of the rare books he'd read in that field. The result is a dire, dull, unexciting book. In two sentences: People quickly form a first impression of you, and very rarely change it even if they were dead wrong or if you make great efforts to change. Tough luck. If you hadn't figured this out for yourself, buy this book.
