Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Standard Zoom Lens for Canon DSLR Cameras

Compact, slight weight and a wide magnification range - this standard zoom lens features a wide focal length range from normal to telephoto equivalent to 29-320mm in the 35mm format. It features an Optical Image Stabilizer for up to 4-stops of effective correction even at full zoom. Since Canon's optical image stabilization system is in the lens, not in the camera, you can see the stabilized, steadier images through the viewfinder. The EF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS is a lens which many Canon users have been waiting for with great anticipation, as an ideal 'all-in-one' lens for travel and 'walkaround' use. In the flesh it behaves much as we'd expect from such an ambitious design, as an 11x zoom range will always necessitate some fairly major optical compromises. Wideangle performance is distinctly mediocre due to a combination of barrel distortion, chromatic aberration, and softness at wide apertures; and while the lens is respectably sharp at longer focal lengths, this is tempered by pincushion distortion around 50mm and chromatic aberration at 200mm. However Canon has to be given some credit for providing users with free software which can compensate for those lens aberrations in RAW conversion, although it can't of course cure underlying sharpness issues.

    Jack of All Trades - Master of {few} - Excellent Walk-around !
If you want a jack of all trades (master of none though!) get the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. I fretted over the Tammy 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD and the Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM. After reviewing comparison images, settled on the Canon. Yep - it's more expensive than the other two, and has a bit less zoom range, but 1/3 stop better in low-light when fully zoomed. As with all of them, you will get some pincushioning and barrel at the extremes and maybe a little CA (all can be calibrated and corrected in Photoshop with a free lens compensation plug-in!!) - however - please note! I took the 18-200 on a 1-week trip overseas, along with my Tokina 12-24 (just in case). I never ONCE needed to put the 12-24 on the camera - the 18-200 did it all. Although I spent about 5 hours creating the lens calibration plug-in, I haven't felt the need to use it on ANY of the photos I've taken with the lens. IF you take wide-angle architectural photos of subjects having long horizontal/vertical linear runs - you WILL want this plug-in !! The IS works well and my images have been well exposed, reasonable color saturation, and acceptable bokeh (this is NOT an f/2.4 lens!)..SO - - bottom line: If you want a VERY NICE walk-around lens suitable for just about all but the most demanding professional situations, you CANNOT go wrong with this one. Just for grins, I have uploaded a few of the 400 photos taken on the trip mentioned above (see pg 16 Ooops - they've moved up to Pg 13 & 14 - of the customer images) - - One of them is the obligatory 'I've been to Germany and looked at the Castles' photo of the back view of Neuschwanstein {Disneyland Castle} in Schwangau taken from the bridge between the two mountains. So look at the examples - then YOU decide if this lens will float your boat or not. For me, it's a keeper.

I have been researching this Canon lens for a couple of months, both in stores and online. When I saw it here on Amazon, advertised for several hundred dollars less than everywhere else I was very skeptical of its authenticity. After doing some more research and reading reviews I decided to order it. I am so glad I did! It arrived the next day, shipped very securely in the original factory box with everything inside, including the product registration card and the CD-ROM manual. I verified the serial number on the box with the one on the lens and on the registration card, and then I registered it on the Canon website. It is an authentic brand new Canon lens.
I am a purely amateur photographer who mostly takes pictures of my kids, my dog, and our family vacations. I'm using this lens on my Rebel XS and I love it! I was very tired of constantly switching between my standard and zoom lenses, and I'm so happy with this combination lens. It's obviously heavier than the standard lens but it's actually more lightweight than I thought it was going to be. The pictures are crystal clear and the image stabilization is a "must have" on any lens you buy. The focus is a little slower than the standard lens but, again, it's faster than I thought it was going to be.
All in all I couldn't be happier with this lens and I can't wait to take pictures at my kids' sporting events!

AWESOME PRICE! Sure, it's not official boxing; mine came in a white cardboard box with lots of wrapping, but who cares! The lens is pretty good; I've taken some pretty decent shots ranging from: sports photography, portraits, landscapes, and common objects!

Cons: Hmm, don't know if this is normal, but 135mm-200mm doesn't seem too drastic of a difference; I've taken shots at both ranges and they seem to be nearly the same :(. Is there a defect with mine? Lens creep does come in when you're zoomed at 24mm and facing the lens toward the ground.

Pros: Great grip; the zoom bar is very wide and has a nice grip! The zoom placement is also very nice; you use your index finger to adjust the zoom! It's also not too heavy either!

Overall: Get this. It's cheaper than an 18-135, and works just as well if not better!!

    Update: December 1, 2013. At 18mm you will be at f/3.6. 24mm you'll be at f/4.0. Roughly 40mm you'll be at f/4.5. 50mm f/5.0. 80mm+ f/5.6.
Love the fact that you can lock the lens at 18mm. Good for carrying it around without getting "boner lens."
Sports photography can be a pain sometimes (indoors) when you have to constantly adjust the iso and or shutter speed due to the change in aperture.

I am a "serious amateur" photographer who takes pictures of birds, nature scenes and people themed events. I have a few EF "L" series lens and while this lens is not quite up to par with the "L" series, nonetheless, it is very good. I specifically purchased the lens to photograph recitals in an auditorium setting and to take when I hike. The versatility of the lens gives me the ability to quickly take wide angle audience reaction shots as well as to focus in on one person with no changing of the lens. Of course there is a trade off - the low light available in an auditorium prevents razor sharp images even with image stabilization on. After saying that, when I used the lens outdoors with plenty of light, the results are extremely nice. Other reviewers mention the awkwardness of the "lock" button. Perhaps I am missing something, but I never engage the lock since you can only lock the lens at the widest aperature. Of note - I attach my XSi and this lens with a wrist strap while hiking over even or slightly inclined terrain - I've had no problems with the lens extending on its own. I would recommend this lens to anyone who needs a versatile lens at a moderate price. Please remember this is an EF-S lens and not an EF lens.

I'm no professional photographer. I'm the guy who takes most of his shots on full auto, but drops down to manual occasionally when needed. I do appreciate a clear, high quality picture coupled with convenience and am already finding the 200mm zoom invaluable. I was worried that the zoom capabilities would compromise quality but I'm extremely impressed. Definitely superior image quality to the 18-55 'kit lens'. I have this on a Canon T1i.

Great price on this lens and fast shipping too - saved ~$200 over a local purchase here in Victoria BC
