I researched for many days to figure out the watch that I wanted to purchase and which watch had the most features for the price. I finally decided this was going to be my pick after intense research. And boy am I glad I did.
To note: I bought this over a week ago, but the first watch, the heart rate sensor did not work correctly and had to be returned (shout out to Amazon for a awesome customer service!)
So, I will do a short review on the defective watch, without the heart rate sensor included, and then the second watch with the heart rate sensor.
The watch was nicely packaged and did not move around in the "tin" at all. Under the watch was the charging cable and an "instruction booklet" which was more of a notice of the watch rather than instructions.
The watch started up quickly and connected to my phone with ease (I use Android). The watch was in need of an update and therefore, was a few more minutes before I could use it.
When I get both watches, the battery was charged to around 35%. The first watch shut off when that hit 0%, however, the second watch actually went down to 2% then after a few minutes went back up to 8%. So, when you read that the watch needs to be used to 0% then charged right back up to 100%, DO IT! It essentially resets the battery indicator. The first 35% does not last very long as you are updating the watch, installing apps, and trying to get it set up the way you may want it to be.
Charging the watch from 0% to 100% takes just about an hour. However, if you really wanted, you can actually use the watch while it is charging. My first charge lasted me a full 24 hours with rather heavy use as I was installing apps, replying to texts, trying out the music player, made a phone call, and used Google Assistant. I have only charged the second watch to 100% three times now but am actually finding it hard to use all of the battery in 24 hours. I even go for a 40 to 45 minute walk every morning and that will only deplete around 10% battery or so.
The watch is SUPER FAST and has no lag. I am able to quickly go back and forth between screens and apps with not stutter. There are plenty of apps to install as well, and I know that I have merely only scratched the surface.
The biggest change has been for the heart rate monitor to not always be tracking. I have found apps that indicate that they are supposed to complete that task, but none have worked in that manner yet. While I am talking about the heart rate sensor, it appears to be relatively accurate. No more or less accurate than the Fitbit that I had been using. In fact, I tried it next to the Fitbit on multiple occasions and they both read within one or two beats of each other. There are, however, times when it reads that my heart rate is in the 100's when I am sitting on the couch, so that can be concerning, however, it is not consistently tracking your heart rate, so those measurements, I feel, can be thrown out.
For the exercise part, it works very well. My normal walking path is around 8,000 steps as my Fitbit counted hundreds of times. When I walk the exact same path with the Ticwatch E, it counts around 8,000 steps. The only caveat it that you have to manually start an activity as the integrated app and Google Fit will not automatically track exercises. However, when it does track, it seems pretty accurate. Especially for the audience that this is being purchased by. Most people who want a nearly perfect summation of activity that they have completed are not going to be looking to run or work out in a smart watch, but an actual activity tracker.
The watch does not have an ambient light sensor, so you have to manually change the brightness. There are plenty of watch faces that automatically come with the watch and about umpteen million on the Play Store and with other apps in the Play Store.
The build of the watch it plastic, however, it does not feel cheap. It is a softer plastic and seems as if it will hold up well.
If you are on the edge with this watch, just give it a shot. You may be pleasantly surprised. I know that I was very pleasantly surprised with this watch and how well it is made and how it does with every day use.
Update 4-7-18: after roughly two weeks with this watch, it is on its way to being returned. Even though the actual function of the watch worked well, there are features that most will not use. The battery life was so dismal that I could not help but be dissatisfied. Example: charged it to 100 at 3pm by the following morning at 9am, it had less that 20% left. This may not sound too bad but I didn't use it to text, call, or exercise. I literally charged it and wore it as a watch. And it still sucked up 80% of the battery in 18 hours. Hopefully others out there have better luck than I did.
First of all, the biggest inconsistency is the battery life. You'll see a lot of people saying it's great and then a lot saying it is positively awful. While at first I thought it could be maybe possible they just have two different sources for batteries and one wasn't good, I now think I understand the problem -- and it can throw you a bit. You see, the biggest problem comes down to the watch face. Oh the apps matter too of course, but the watch face is the biggest thing as it is continuously active and operating in the background. The curious thing is, it seems that Android Wear doesn't seem to be truly putting it completely to sleep when the screen is off, so even with ambient display ("screen always on") disabled, it WILL still use a fair bit of battery power if the watch face is not a very efficient one. (I believe this is basically an OS design issue, not a watch issue.) One thing that really will throw you is not all watch faces that are really simple are actually efficient (while not all complex ones are necessarily inefficient.) The built in ones are probably the cleanest -- especially the green one. I recently tried a simplistic one that emulated an old Casio style watch's look and found the battery life was going down fairly quickly (though this was probably because I had to manually adjust the text positioning in its settings due to it just not fitting correctly in the default. I think that made it use more resources to process. Or maybe it was just outright inefficient, I don't know.) One good third party one I found is called "Everyday Watch Face." This one allows you to customize the color and general look (and in fact you can even make it keep the color during ambient mode. Use a color like red and it likely uses a bit less power versus the default white.) I like to keep my display on and it's part of why I bought this one instead of a more typical smartwatch -- I can't stand the idea of a watch that isn't showing the time when you look at it unless you shake your hand around (plus I have to turn that function off since it would come on too much and drain too fast from going on and off all day long with shaking.) Today I checked after a very long day at work at quite a while away from home after work (I guess about 14 hours or so) and it was still about 64% (so I guess that's approximately 22 hours run time with the screen always on for me and light usage for a few messages, some timers, and etc. Oh, and with WiFi enabled, though it goes into automatic mode and generally just runs on Bluetooth if the phone is in range -- which it was the whole time.)
It goes without saying that if you're messing around with it a lot -- especially when you're first setting it up and you inevitably can't resist popping on a bunch of apps to play around with, playing music through the speaker, etc etc -- you'll probably drain the battery very quickly. It's not a very BIG battery. It's just that it's big enough to be effective if this is used correctly. I didn't really see that much of a difference in following the recommendation of letting the battery drain, then recharging fully several times. If I'm not mistaken this sounds like it just means it's not fully calibrated upon release (which is silly, but if their batches of batteries actually DO differ wildly then it might be understandable if still a bit unreasonable for it to not be perfectly calibrated out of the box.) If so you don't actually get more battery life, it just reports more accurately over time. So you likely shouldn't judge too much by that since it still really depends on how you're really using it.
Feature-wise it's pretty decent. It doesn't have NFC, so no paying with your watch, but it's not THAT hard to pay with a phone if you want to use NFC (not to mention so few places accept NFC payments anyway. All too often the only thing that works is something that emulates an actual card like Samsung Pay which would likely not work on most non-Samsung smartwatches anyway.) I will be honest and say I did not really test anything fitness related. It has a heartrate monitor as is fairly typical. I haven't really tested GPS very much. It normally just pulls GPS data from your phone as this is significantly more efficient and more likely to be accurate. Of course, if you leave the phone behind and go jogging without it or something you might care about how well its own GPS works and I can't speak to that point except to say that someone cut the fairly permanent band off of the S and found the antenna isn't that much more impressive in it (not really going into the actual band itself at all,) so I wouldn't necessarily spend the extra for that if this is an important point.
As far as other features go there's not a lot to say. Most of what you're getting here is a fairly standard Android Wear 2.0 device following most of the official specifications. You have a single button so you must use the touchscreen to scroll which isn't too hard to get used to. Beyond that it's mostly just standard Android Wear stuff. You can hold the power button to get the Google Assistant to search things, set reminders, etc etc or just press it to toggle between the watch face and app list (or just as a quick shortcut to wake the screen, but the touchscreen is always on anyway.) The button is on the left side, yes. That means if you wear the watch on your left hand it will be perfect as your right thumb will align with it. If you wear it on your right side you might find it slightly more inconvenient. (But one thing maybe worth trying is looking for a screen rotation app. Then just put the band on backwards to make it so you can flip the watch around.)
And of course you have a fairly typical IP rating of 67 -- pretty typical for smartwatches. That means it's basically completely resistant to dust but water resistance is still somewhat limited. It can be completely immersed in water, but can't take any real pressure (eg no deeper than 1m and you wouldn't want to be wearing this while being sprayed with a hose or something.) Things like washing your hands would probably be ok within reason. Swimming with it would be a bad idea. Of course, IP67 doesn't say it can't take more than that bare minimum, just that there are no guarantees beyond that. I have seen videos of people putting it in water and it came out fine with the only effect being the touchscreen acts like all other touchscreens do when wet (it messes with conductivity and thus accuracy. Dry the screen first for best results.)
One annoying missing feature is that it doesn't have an ambient light sensor. This used to not be a problem. Android Wear apparently had a feature built in to automatically adjust the brightness at certain times of day from what I understand (obviously I'm coming in late to the game here.) Sadly this was suddenly removed one day. (I guess because ambient light sensors have become very common Google decided just to completely remove the feature entirely?) There is only one app on the market to do this and it is ancient, outdated, and doesn't work on modern devices (this included) unfortunately. This means you have to set a brightness that is the least annoying and mostly just leave it that way if you don't have the patience to manually change it twice or so every single day. (I found that two seemed to be the best. It's kind of hard to see in direct sunlight on two, but anything higher and it's way too bright at night -- at least with ambient display enabled.) I would hope someday they might add something to fix this, but I doubt it. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell this is an Android Wear limitation more than anything else and not truly Mobvoi's fault except insofar as the cost reduction of not having the light sensor, so it's probably Google who needs to be updating something for this (it's not as if this is the only one without a light sensor!) Unfortunately it probably won't happen. (They still won't fix the lack of fineness in the volume control in all this time even though all they have to do is change a single number in a single source file to do it!)
Another plus is on the E model the watch band is 100% standard. Just the same sort of snap-in connector they all use. It's 18mm size apparently, so basically you can use any band you want. The band that comes with it is very soft and flexible so quite comfortable, but these days there are some really nice metal bands that can be sized more precisely to fit better or use a magnet for simplicity and comfort (though I always had trouble with the magnets being knocked loose and sliding or even pulling to other metal surfaces.) EDIT: Correction. I had read online that it is 18mm. It appears to actually be 19mm instead. While you can get by with an 18mm band, the spring bar pins probably need to be 19mm. I ordered a 18mm band based on what I had read and it seems to be holding so far, but very little strain would probably pop it loose. I ordered 19mm spring bar pins to compensate, but if you're buying new you probably just want to do a 19mm band to begin with.
So all in all I'd give this a 5/5 rating because it really does make for a great bang for the buck with almost every feature you could really actually need, good battery life, etc etc for a great price. Unfortunately, I guess their support is pretty bad. I was having trouble getting the Android Assistant to work and that was one of the biggest reasons I bought this. So I contacted tech support. It has been more than a week and still no answer. Ultimately I solved it myself (it turned out somehow it hadn't set a default assistant on the phone itself, so when the watch tried to use it through the phone it was failing) but in all this time I should have heard something. Oh, and I do actually check my spam folder at least once a day. So chances are if you buy this you need to do so fully expecting to have to figure out any issues yourself. They do have an official forum though, so you can surely ask in there for help from other users more specifically familiar with the particular device though. (Otherwise there's always XDA-Developers I suppose.) I had to knock off one star here. However, everything else I need a smartwatch to do it does quite well and has a great price for all that it offers, so otherwise it deserves a great rating.
BTW, the bootloader is freely unlockable and people are already writing third party software for it. It's probably some time away before (if ever) it should have anything like some sort of AOSP version of Android Wear or something of the sort, but it might be a possibility. Something to look forward to anyway.
