I was one of the first adopters of the original roku, and I long since thought, why bother updating the old little box if it is still working. So for 7 years after we cut the cable cord we let the one little box be our main form of entertainment. And it was amazing, and we were happy.
After moving to a new house I though perhaps it was time to update and get a roku3 as it had recently had a price drop. I will admit right here and now that I was again impressed and felt my money had been well spent. In our new house, with a new TV we have been watching clearer shows, more stable os on the roku, and loving some of the strange free content we find.
We still had our old TV and after a huge argument about no tv in the bedroom my husband put up the old tv in our bedroom anyways. Well fine, so be it. But damn it, I am getting another new roku. Why not save $90 bucks and just attach the old one, well....first off who doesn't like new, 2ndly the roku 3 and the roku premiere+ have headset jacks in the remotes which allow for the tv to be watched silently also they are close enough in attributes that they are fairly interchangeable.
I plugged in this item and logged into my accounts, and it's just amazing. It's a tiny box, that takes up hardly any space. It uses Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon and still has a pile of extra free channels of junk to watch. It's just easy to use. Seriously it's what the $150 /month Comcast should be but isn't - cheap, easy, dependable, and full of content. It's flat out amazing that for $21 a month we get damn cheap tv access, one that I would argue is better than the Comcast subscription.
People ask me all the time, how does one cut the cord. Simple you call comcast and you end the TV service, and the phone service (see my "obi" review). Have some DVD's handy, because you will detox from the TV addiction hard cord, and likely Comcast will remove the wrong services a few times. Have faith that the first few months to a year you will miss the commercials, you will want desperately to know which cleaning product will work work best, or phone features, movie trailers. But in time you will realize all of that is the power of advertising, you are literately addicted to it. Many will come to you and ask if you saw the new commercial about an item, and the Superbowl will suddenly be a huge product placement advertisement - and you will be clueless.
After about a year you will realize that pile of cleaners under you sink for the first time ever is shrinking, same thing with hair products because you no longer are under the spell of the advertisements. You bank account will grow and you will have spare money. No joke, partly because you don't pay $150 per month for TV; and partly because you are simply buying different products. The amount of money P&G, unilever, and others spend to attract new business will no longer effect you the same.
We had cable, and i went to target or walmart weekly for one reason or another. Food, cleaning, or personal supplies. Now, Target and Walmart are lucky to see me once a quarter. My needs remain the same, but now I just buy what I like in bulk quarterly. and only the Grocery store sees me regularly for fresh veggies. I joined a buy nothing group, and purchase even less. Seriously TV is an addiction and we need to stop staring at it.
Summary: Wow. We are in the process of "cutting the cord", and we bought three of these (one for each TV) and paired them with a Tablo OTA DVR for Live TV. What an amazing combination. The only snafu was streaming of live TV over WiFi...see details below.
Detail: After installing the Tablo, I installed the three Roku devices. I hard-wired two of them, and one via WiFi. The Rokus perform wonderfully, and the Tablo interface from the Roku is fantastic. You can read my review of the Tablo for more detail on that device, but I found that the Roku does indeed do true Whole Home with the Tablo DVR. This means you can watch a Tablo recording on the Roku in one room, stop that replay, move to another room, and when you select that same Tablo recording from the other Roku it picks up right where you left off. Nice feature, and something I was looking for since I have this with my current DVR setup from which I will soon be cutting the cord.
We were blown away by all the streaming content available (much of it free, like the CW network) with the Roku! Setting up Netflix and Amazon Streaming was a snap (keep your laptop with you!). ven one of our local TV stations has a Roku channel.
And the whole family appreciates that we now have ONE consistent interface from all of our TVs. Previously, we used our BluRay players for streaming, so each TV had a different (crappy) user interface for each streaming service. Now all rooms share one wonderful interface which is light-years ahead of those clunky BluRay streaming interfaces.
The one issue I ran into was the Tablo could not supply Live TV to the Roku at 1080 over WiFi without occasional buffering. It could be my WiFi network, but this did not happen when using hard-wire connections to the Roku. The Tablo/Roku combo had no issues replaying recordings from the Tablo over WiFi. It was just Live TV streaming where I saw this issue, and it was easily rectified with a hard-wire Ethernet connection.
Geek note: My router did not have enough space for all three Rokus, so I am adding a 1GB network switch. The Tablo and three Rokus will be hard-wired to that switch, with the Internet WiFi router connected off to the side. This will allow the Rokus to talk to the Tablo without touching my internet or WiFi gear. For Roku streaming of internet-based content, the switch will hand off to the internet router. But LiveTV traffic will be completely isolated from Internet and WiFi traffic, allowing full HD streaming of Live TV without impacting other internet/wifi traffic. If you are "cutting the cord", you will want to make sure you have a good network in your home to support Live TV this way. It does not matter how fast your Internet connection is when streaming from the Tablo to your Roku. All that matters is the quality of your home Ethernet network.
