The game's career mode was also nice since you could play as a current, real fighter. Nice to start from the bottom and watch both your fighter and you develop as you get accustomed to the controls and game features. I was captivated by this game when I watched Youtube gameplay clips and I'm still captivated now that I have it. Fantastic product & purchase.
My initial reaction was... blah. Which, I agree, was unfair. But I got the game and started playing right away and felt like I already kind of had it figured out from the beginning. The big knock I would have against this game is that it sort of lacks depth. Otherwise, this game is excellent.
Overall Gameplay:
You have to play this game and know what it is before you start judging it. This is not a fighting game wrapped in a Madden shell, which I think is sort of always the expectation of a sports game when you play it. There are so much those games have to offer with modes, updates, depth of players and player customization. That game doesn't seem to have much of that, but again, I don't think it's supposed to. Sports like football seem to have a new star every week, so the games need to reflect that. I think EA did a great job of representing the UFC in this game. The game modes accurately represent what fans of the UFC know to be true about fighters. Rarely is there an absolute superstar born overnight, usually you get to see these guys fight, maybe in different companies, or in the UFC on the undercard. This game captures that same mentality and plays it out very well. I think the fighters in the game look absolutely stunning and the game does a good job of leaving me interested for more.
Career Mode:
In most sports games, usually my first destination is franchise or career mode. Because franchise can't exist on this game, I jumped right into the career mode. Without spoiling what little story this mode has, I will say that the beginning of the mode left a lot to be desired. It seems that you are kind of thrown in the middle of the action without fully getting your bearings. Luckily, the game recognizes this and makes the first few opponents about as easy as possible. Once you make your way into the "main" part of the career, any story that did exist is now absolutely gone. There is no drama to what you're doing. It seems closer to playing as a person who does this as a job rather than becoming an actual piece of the modern UFC story. You sort-of make your way through the ranks, pretty much destroying the next guy you face. You do this for 10-12 fights before anything actually starts to feel important. (Note: the first time I played-through I just kept picking the highest ranked guy for my next fight, while this did keep the game challenging, you rank up entirely too fast and soon you are in the top 20 and you're barely an 80 overall, not a good idea). That being said, there is a very clear line you cross over in the career where you go from beating everybody pretty easily, to barely making it out of the rounds. In my first play through I found this to be very frustrating. However, as in most things, you need to really play this mode for yourself to experience it. My advice is to use your imagination a little bit to keep the mode feeling fresh and desirable.
Ultimate Team:
As I am still experimenting with the Ultimate Team mode that this game has to offer I won't touch too much on it. I will however mention that it is almost exactly like any other games Ultimate Team experience. This is a good and bad thing. The good part of it is that if you really like these game modes, this mode is for you. It's very cool to have a team of guys and upgrade them and compete with them at different weight classes. The bad part is that like most Ultimate Team modes, it very clearly pulls you in, and then makes you beg for progress. I have never been a fan of these modes because it just feels like a cash dump in a game that you already spent a good amount of money on. Players should get rewarded much more in these modes than just " you are out of currency, how about you buy more?" I will say though, that EA added kind of a nice twist to the mode where you don't have a team that you drew out of a pack and got to play with. Instead, you create a player and the packs contain upgrades for your player. You can open a pack with a new high kick, or a new takedown and apply it to your player. You can even get cards that give you a certain boost to things like Stamina and Toughness. I thought this was especially cool as it adds a real personal level to a game mode that definitely needs it.
All in all, I'm happy that I bought this game. I've gotten good time out of it, and it's a game that makes me want to come back and try new things, whether that be a new run-through of career mode with a different weight class, or just kicking Cormier in the head with Jon Jones repeatedly. Whatever you're into.
For the true UFC fan, you will get a good experience out of this game. The fighters fight and feel like the real deal and the depth of moves and combinations gives you the thrill you are looking for. For the casual gamer that just wants to fight his buddy, this game may be a little out of range. It's a pretty technical game that rewards you for know what to throw, from which direction at what time.
