Editorial Reviews
Sinkane music — every note of it — comes straight from a generosity of spirit, and never has that spirit been on more vivid display than on the new album Life & Livin’ It. Produced by founder and frontman Ahmed Gallab, the album draws from the best elements of Sinkane’s previous records: the slinky funk and soul grooves are there, so are the sparkling melodies with roots in sub-Saharan Africa. Life & Livin’ It is true to its name: it’s an album about all kinds of experiences, an uplifting album about a universal feeling of soul. "My family emigrated to the United States from Sudan," Ahmed explains, "and I grew up around a lot of folks who weren’t like me, as an outsider. That’s influenced me and my music immensely, and ultimately, this entire project is my way of connecting with all kinds of people — what better way to start a conversation with someone than by telling them a story about yourself that they can relate to?” When Ahmed sings, he sounds unafraid yet vulnerable. But while he once sang of feeling like he was on Mars, Ahmed is now firmly grounded on Earth. He’s no longer searching for his home — he has created a home for himself. There’s a party there, and Life & Livin’ It is playing on the stereo. You are invited.

I was interested enough to pre-order this lp, though. And I'm glad I did, because this one is the best thing I've heard yet this young year (don't worry, it'll get old fast). In the interim, Sinkane has been leading a William Onyeabor cover band, and Onyeabor's influence is all over this one. If you groove on this lp, I can't recommend the Onyeabor collection on Luka Bop nearly enough. World Psychedelic Classics 5: Who Is William Onyeabor? As an added extra, Sinkane's band has tightened up, in particular Jason Lam, and the songs are stronger. This one has a bop and continuity to it Mean Love just didn't have.
I've been playing this thing pretty consistently since I bought it. How good is it? Well, I think my four star grade may be a bit on the conservative end of things. It's at least that. Is it five star? I dunno. My current favorite lp is this one: Rhythmo de Cotonou, Vol. 1: Vodoun Effect - Funk and Sato from Benin'sobscure Labels 19 [Vinyl ] which I bet Sinkane might even admit is better than his. Give me another few months to let this one sink in (haha) and I might have to slink back here and up this review to five stars.

Other tracks I recommend - Telephone, Favourite Song and Passenger
Sehr erfrischender Sound abseits des Mainstream-Einheitsbrei. Auch live ist die Band super.
Weiter so Sinkane!
