Editorial Reviews

Sinkane music — every note of it — comes straight from a generosity of spirit, and never has that spirit been on more vivid display than on the new album Life & Livin’ It. Produced by founder and frontman Ahmed Gallab, the album draws from the best elements of Sinkane’s previous records: the slinky funk and soul grooves are there, so are the sparkling melodies with roots in sub-Saharan Africa. Life & Livin’ It is true to its name: it’s an album about all kinds of experiences, an uplifting album about a universal feeling of soul. "My family emigrated to the United States from Sudan," Ahmed explains, "and I grew up around a lot of folks who weren’t like me, as an outsider. That’s influenced me and my music immensely, and ultimately, this entire project is my way of connecting with all kinds of people — what better way to start a conversation with someone than by telling them a story about yourself that they can relate to?” When Ahmed sings, he sounds unafraid yet vulnerable. But while he once sang of feeling like he was on Mars, Ahmed is now firmly grounded on Earth. He’s no longer searching for his home — he has created a home for himself. There’s a party there, and Life & Livin’ It is playing on the stereo. You are invited.

Absolutely love this! I heard 'Telephone' on my local community radio station, KDHX, and immediately knew that this was going to be a good one. Never having experienced Sinkane before, I struggle to put it in a single genre and I don't believe it's correctly labeled by Amazon. Just spit-balling here; I would classify this as Electronic funk with a strong Afrobeat and Reggae influence (I don't know). This album is funky, chill, and the grooves are free flowing... just what the doctor ordered in this crazy time

I stumbled on this as an NPR Music First Listen and have been hooked since then. Hard to categorize it as far as musical styles go -- contemporary R&B with Afropop and Reggae accents. It just works really well and gets better with each listen.

I doubt I'm the intended audience for this album. I'm on a freight train heading towards sixty and not turning back. I found out about Sinkane entirely by accident; I had ordered a different album and our friends at Amazon sent me "Mean Love" instead. I tried to return it, but Amazon told me to keep the copy they had sent and then sent me a copy of the record I had initially ordered instead (they didn't, but the story is getting too long anyway. It's what we do at the home in our spare time). I listened to "Mean Love." It was interesting, containing an odd melange of instrumentation, including pedal steel, and had one absolute killer of a song-- "How We Be" if you're at all curious what an old fart thinks-- but never quite caught my attention as a whole.

I was interested enough to pre-order this lp, though. And I'm glad I did, because this one is the best thing I've heard yet this young year (don't worry, it'll get old fast). In the interim, Sinkane has been leading a William Onyeabor cover band, and Onyeabor's influence is all over this one. If you groove on this lp, I can't recommend the Onyeabor collection on Luka Bop nearly enough.
World Psychedelic Classics 5: Who Is William Onyeabor? As an added extra, Sinkane's band has tightened up, in particular Jason Lam, and the songs are stronger. This one has a bop and continuity to it Mean Love just didn't have.

I've been playing this thing pretty consistently since I bought it. How good is it? Well, I think my four star grade may be a bit on the conservative end of things. It's at least that. Is it five star? I dunno. My current favorite lp is this one:
Rhythmo de Cotonou, Vol. 1: Vodoun Effect - Funk and Sato from Benin'sobscure Labels 19 [Vinyl ] which I bet Sinkane might even admit is better than his. Give me another few months to let this one sink in (haha) and I might have to slink back here and up this review to five stars.

Most of the CD could use improvement; about 3 good pieces of music on there!

I've been listening to Sinkane's Mean Love pretty frequently for the past few months. I was super excited to see he had a new album and it was streaming in it's entirety on npr prior to it's release. I listened to the whole thing non-stop a few days in a row and now I'm buying it so I can always have it in my library. If you've never listened to Sinkane, think Nigerian High-Life filtered through the 80's, then mellowed and made contemporary. does that make sense? no, okay, but you can hear the echos of high-life and i love it.

I listened to Sinkane for the first time while watching Conan where they performed U'Huh, their best track, if you ask me. I highly recommend this album, it makes for a fine listening on a lazy Sunday afternoon, with its warm notes lighting the day up, no matter how drab it is outside!
Other tracks I recommend - Telephone, Favourite Song and Passenger

klare Kaufempfehlung für das Album.
Sehr erfrischender Sound abseits des Mainstream-Einheitsbrei. Auch live ist die Band super.
Weiter so Sinkane!
