FIVE HEARTS--My favorite pirate throuple returns just in time for Christmas *ahem* Jizzmas!

Finally, a Santa jizz story that I can get behind! Pirates! And not your run of the mill pirates either. I've made my love for the "Baal's Heart" series well known. It's been documented all over. Sadly, you can't just jump to this Jizzmas short, you must read the first three novels before reading Careened.

Trust me, it's worth it.

We're back on the lush island of Madierus with Jon, Tom and Baltsaros, where one of the men is having some trouble, after effects from events in Fated. Are the men strong enough to weather the storm?

Yes! They are communicating, though you'd be surprised (or maybe not) who is having more trouble with talking in this novella. It's Winter Solstice. And each man has different customs but band together because no matter what their relationship is important to them and makes them strong.

The story starts dark (not as dark as the author can get don't worry). Not only does Careened revisit with the main men but also Kate and her lady love, Maya. They're having a big surprise! The Winter Solstice is getting to the inhabitants and the holiday spirit seems to even affect the pirate throuple...in a good way. The story ends happy, hopeful and a little kinky. I wasn't expecting that present at all. I loved all the gifts they each got each other but Baltsaros' gifts for each of his men were golden. I'd add my favorite quote here but I think it'd ruin the surprise and what's Jizzmas without some surprises, huh?

This is a great gift for Baal's Heart's fans. Highly recommended.

I'm wavering between 4.5 - 5 Hearts for my rating, but you know what? I just finished this with a huge smile on my face. I just read through a range of emotions (depression, anger, fear, guilt, hope, love) from all three men in less than 45 pages and it packed a punch, so I'm going with the higher end of rating.

"It's Li'l Tom's first time in his golden gibbet. Give the poor hurtin' thing a bloody break!"

So happy to see the men growing stronger together.

P.S. There are a number of unicorns that will quelt themselves when getting to this but there is one especially that will prance with glee. She might even go off like a rocket when she reads this.

I had a dream almost two months ago where Jon, Tom, and Baltsaros were in a Christmas special together... something like one of those Hallmark holiday movies. It was ridiculous... there was even a laugh track, if I recall.

So I ended up writing a story very loosely based on that dream... Very loosely.

If you're not into holiday stories, this one's not necessary to make sense of the next chapter in Baal's Heart (hopefully Summer 2016). It's just a bit of silly holiday shenanigans to put some smiles on the faces of my pirates, and hopefully, the fans of the books.

This was cute and hot. Christmas-not-Christmas with our boys.

Sex, love and beaches. Not necessarily in that order, and definitely simultaneously.

I love Tom.

Reread- September 2017-Audiobook - still as beautiful the second time round!!! Can't wait for more of this addictive triad!!

Just Aaaamazing!! I seriously missed these guys, I'll have to go back and reread the series soon I think!!

Poor Jon is still recovering from the events that occurred at the end of Fated: Blood and Redemption and is struggling quite a lot. It made me sad :'-( But then Tom steps in to make Jon feel better and he made me so very happy! And then Baltsaros said probably the most beautiful thing ever, and I don't want to put it here because it won't be as beautiful out of context, but it made me cry... like very happy/sad tears.

My emotions were all over the place in the short period of reading this story.

It was quite Christmassy as well, which was awesome. Of course some smoking hot sex and a little surprise....

“I love ye. Jon, do ye hear me? Do you? I bloody love ye. I’m sorry for any shite I said just now. Wasn’t thinkin’. I am a fuckin’ bastard. Yer right. Yer bloody right. And yer breakin’ my heart, Jon. I love ye. I love ye so much it scares me. Bloody hells, love. It scares me. Bein’ without ye. I can’t even think about it. Fuck, if I could, I’d take every hurt done to ye so ye didn’t have to. If I could kill those fuckers again, I’d do it slower than hells. I just love ye so much, Jon. With all my bloody heart.” Tom knew the tears in his eyes weren’t solely from the hit to his nose, and he held onto Jon like his life depended on it.

God I love Tom. He's seriously the sweetest. And this entire story is the first time I can truly say there is 'romance' and heart felt gestures. Tom and Baltsaros mostly whole, put Jon back together.
It's not perfect and it might never be. But these three belong together.
Perfect ending.
Cannot recommend this series more.
Loved it.

Review:
This little story, which takes place after the trilogy, was so cute it nearly made me cry. All three men were such sweethearts in this one, even Baltsaros.

The final book didn't have the happiest of endings because the characters were still struggling with some things, but I'm glad to say this short story fixed that. It was a much better ending, and I definitely recommend it. I'm gonna miss these characters.

Tom just kissed him and murmured to him softly. "I love you, Jon. Do you hear me? Do you? I bloody love you."

The three of them were such broken things. They truly needed one another.

(And I don't even have to say it, but of course Michael Ferraiuolo's narration of the audio was amazing.)

An amazing series, and this gave it the adorable ending it deserved!

Cute epilogue that the book desperately needed. Jon and Tom want to surprise each other with a Christmas-like party, and Baltsaros decides to surprise both of them in turn.

I love the idea of pirates decorating for the holiday season, hanging their stockings, snowflakes, and festive garlands. Of course in Careened: Winter Solstice in Madierus they do it all with the flair only Bey Deckard can bring to a story.

Visions of sugarplums? *ahem*, well not quite...

Reeling from the after effects of his capture at the end of book three in the Baal’s Heart series, Jon has sunk into a deep depression. Hoping to bolster Jon’s spirits and pull him out of his funk, Tom and the Captain plan a little holiday celebration one can only appreciate if they’ve followed these men from the start of the series.

There’s a scene early in the story when Tom is trying to help Jon cope with his rape and torture. The intensity of his love for Jon, Tom’s utter devotion, is so beautifully written it just tugged at my heart. I’m so pleased to see these two men find such fulfillment in each other; I think Bey Deckard does an amazing job building the characters in this series, and the fact I feel so emotionally invested in their happiness is the mark of an incredible author.

Careened includes a wonderful side story about Kat and Maya expecting their first child. Kat is thrilled but overcome by feelings of jealousy at not being included in the babe’s conception. Ah, to be a fly on the wall, right? Banter between Kat and Tom is as clever as always, “Need a hand?” Tom asks the one armed pirate struggling with a load of boxes. Yes, he has a death wish.

Withholding Tom’s pleasure is a recurring theme in this installment, culminating in the presentation of Baltsaros’ gift to Tom... well let’s just say it’s a gift for all three of them.

Thankfully this little gem goes a long way in restoring the balance in their relationship.

Michael Ferraiuolo does an excellent job infusing Jon’s voice with his emotions. The angst over the after effects of his rape, his frustration with his sad little gift for Tom, and especially projecting the passion that Tom always manages to rise in Jon.

The Variety Ferraiuolo finds in his voices is always excellent, but I found his insight into Jon’s character particularly wonderful in this book.

Careened is an absolute pleasure and I can’t wait for more stories of my favorite pirates.

Ummm, I'm not going to rate this because I goofed.
I think it must have been a freebie and it was chillin' on my Kindle when decided to jump into it.
I had no clue it was a novella in the middle of a series and I felt...very lost.
And to be honest, I was still flying high from my pirates last week and these guys didn't snag me like they could/should have.
So, my bad.
I'll pay closer attention next time!

A sweet and hot holiday story with Tom, Jon and Baltsaros? Heck yeah! Thanks for the present Bey Deckard. Although my kindle caught fire towards the end, it was such a hot finish. Where do I send the repair bill?

I love this series, and I've missed these men tremendously. For us fans, this novella is the perfect Christmas present.

Just when I think I've seen all the sides the trio has to offer, they show me more. Oh, Tom. I always love Tom. He's as amazing as ever. Jon had me worried for awhile. I've always understood Jon more and loved Tom more. Baltsaros has always scared me a bit. I never quite know what to expect from him. He totally surprised me again. All three men gave me heart pains, but the Captain actually made my eyes start stinging.

The guys and their relationship are a beauty to behold. Careened is a total treat of love and play. I definitely recommend it.

Review by The Blogger Girls.

What a wonderful surprise this story was! As with each previous story, we are immediately brought back into this fantastic world.

The guys are all back at home base resting and recovering. Jon is having a bit of a rough time with his nightmares and especially as Baltsaros seems to play a starring role. This puts him at great odds with B. Even though he consciously knows how things are and doesn’t blame B, his subconscious doesn’t feel the same and he doesn’t quite know what to do to make them see eye to eye.

Tom, oh lovely Tom, just makes me smile every single time he is on page, whether it be his thoughts or his words, he is just one fabulous character. He is worried about poor Jon but is just about at his wit’s end with trying to figure out how to help the situation.

Baltsaros is frustrated as well, but remains understanding and patient. It takes the group as a whole, including the outside cast of characters, such as one-handed Kate and her now pregnant Myra, to help with the big plan. Tom and Jon each have a plan to do something special for the other, but it is B who runs with it and really puts the icing on the cake. Baltsaros shines in the end here and shows us, once again, how he is the strong mast holding up his sails, Tom and Jon. His present to Jon was extremely moving, and I can only imagine how Jon and even Tom felt when it was explained.

This was a wonderful little story, and even though it is short, it contains all of the elements of the previous full-length stories. So much so, that it felt like a miniaturized version. Each story feels like a piece of giant cake with this being a satisfying taste. I highly recommend this amazing series and urge you to experience every bite.

A Joyfully Jay review.

5 stars

This book is still laced with the aftermath of the darkness that drove the previous books, but also manages to have a lighter, dare I say romantic, tone as well. The relationship between Jon and Tom is fully on display as Tom lays out his heart for Jon and their interactions continue to make this series. Tom’s personality enhances the atmosphere; with as much as he’s been through, his playful side is still intact and it’s his dialogue here that tempers the undertone of sadness and will leave you smiling.

In less than 50 pages, Deckard gives us a complete story filled with a range of emotions that continues to illustrate his story-telling talents. It’s simply the experience of connecting again with the men of Baal’s Heart and Deckard effortlessly takes us back to their world where the setting and the characters’ voices remain true. What finally turns the tide is maybe Baltsaros giving the men the most perfect gifts that truly highlight how well he knows his partners, or maybe it’s that the author himself continues to write the most realistic and successful triad and knows exactly what each character needs.

This book is absolutely recommended for readers who have read this amazing series. It’s most certainly the book that you didn’t know you were missing. If you haven’t gotten to this series yet, well that’s a bit of luck for you as you can begin at book one.

Careened: Winter Solstice in Madierus is the perfect treat for fans of Bey Deckard’s Baal’s Heart series. I remember being pretty excited when I learned that Mr. Deckard was releasing a short holiday story of my three favorite guys! And even more excited when I learned of the audio edition. I’ve been a fan of the very talented Michael Ferraiuolo throughout this series and in his other works. He truly delivers a flawless narration of the complete Baal’s Heart series.

Careened picks up right after the events of book three Fated: Blood and Redemption, making it imperative for readers to have followed the entire series for full enjoyment.

Jon can’t seem to make heads nor tails of his emotions after his and Tom’s kidnapping. He is slowly withdrawing from both Tom and the Captain. He spends his days and nights in turmoil and buries his pain with alcohol.

Tom is beside himself as he watches Jon pull away. He loves Jon so much and doesn’t know how to “fix” the young man. The Captain is equally pained by Jon’s withdrawal especially because Jon seems almost afraid of him. Tom and Baltsaros are both at a loss.

Michael Ferraiuolo captures Jon’s pain and anger captivating his audience and keeping them enraptured in the story.

His voice conveys Jon’s anguish and hurt so beautifully you can’t help but feel it. I could also hear the frustration and love in both Tom and the Captain’s voices.

The holidays have come to the island of Madierus and Captain Baltsaros tells his boys the story of Winter Solstice, or Corestmas as he calls it. He even goes so far as to put on a little red hat! The story inspires all of them in different ways. Jon wants to do something nice for Tom who didn’t have much of a childhood. And Tom wants to buy Jon something special to show how much he cares for him.

But our scheming Captain has the best surprise and it will most definitely pull at your heartstrings...and some other places!!

I really enjoyed seeing these guys scramble around in an effort to do something special for each other. Maya and Kat even put in an appearance and help out with some holiday decorations. The two women, especially Kat, have become very close to Jon and maintain a mostly lukewarm relationship with Tom. Everyone seems caught up in some good holiday cheer.

And oh Lord let me not forget to mention the sexy times. There are quite a few good times and the scene where Baltsaros gives Tom his present had my ears burning. These men have such amazing chemistry and their scenes together are always electrically charged.

Careened: Winter Solstice in Madierus is a definite must if you’re a fan of the series. Bey Deckard gives us all the feels in this short and Michael Ferraiuolo delivers yet again!

Oh what a lovely little Christmas treat for fans of Baal's Heart. Bey Deckard wrote a fantastic series and this additional story gifts us with everything great about the last three books mainly Tom, Jon and Baltseros and the on-going saga of their developing relationship. The dynamic between the three of them shifts and swells like the very sea their story evolved from. While the Baal's Heart is in for repair, the fractious threesome do some mending of their own. Bey Deckard creates a wintery, Christmassy feel to the story even though it's set in the tropics. His vivid imagination is given life through his writing and I found myself immersed in the holiday spirit that captivates Tom, Jon and Baltseros and reunites them in every way. I enjoyed this book immensely and sincerely hope this is not the last tale of Bey's sexy pirates.

These three men...I adore them. They each secretly want to make the winter holiday special for the other two. Tom is so, so sweet. He will do anything to cheer up Jon. And Baltsaros gives Tom a wonderful gift that they all enjoy. They all truly love each other.

It seems that the author had plans for more adventures with these three sexy pirates, but several years have passed with no book. I still have my fingers crossed that a new book will be released one day.

Steamy and cute festive treat

It was nice to get a festive follow up for the piratical threesome which also helped address some of the issues left at the end of the trilogy.

Jon is struggling but Tom and Baltsaros manage to being him back from his nightmarish dreams and find their way together.

Oh my God, this totally rekindled my

It felt so good to spend some time with the boys again, even if it was just for a quickie. Loved this short glimpse of the aftermath of the latest adventure, loved how Tom again was breaking my heart and making me grin in just a few pages, and especially loved Baltsaros' gift for Little Tom... Well, of course I did.

Thank you to the masterminded Bey Deckard for this awesome Christmas present! Need more!

P.S. Discovered this a while ago and he totally is my Baltsaros now... Hope you don't mind my sharing.

I marked this review as a spoiler because I have 2 quotes below that I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read the book yet. This was a lovely novella and is probably as lighthearted as this series could possibly get (which by normal standards is borderline!). It wraps up the series in a way that reflects the relationships of Baltsoras, Tom and Jon: painfully, lovingly, messily and yet in some ways unresolved and open for more life adventures which sadly we won’t be part of... *hint, hint* Deckard. We need back on that pirate ship to see what our lovelies are up to.

Not much to say about this that I haven’t ranted and raved about for the previous 3 books. I had a spoiler in my review for book 3 that dealt with Jon. I think it very much could be carried over to this review regarding how Jon deals with things. I want to say that what makes this novella a wonderful addition to the series is that it had 2 things the previous 3 books didn’t really have:

1) A really, REALLY wonderfully loving and romantic moment from Baltsaros. OK, to be fair Tom made a heartfelt declaration to Jon that was also lovely. However, I think that both Tom’s and Baltaros’s declarations reflect their personalities. There is no finesse to Tom’s emotional declaration as befitting his character. As for Baltsaros? Words, man. WORDS. Anyone would be swept off their feet. How can you not swoon at this when Baltsaros gives Jon a small gift and when he goes to open it see that it’s empty. Baltsaros explains:

“Well,” said Baltsaros, peering into the package. “Here is my strength to keep you safe, no matter the cost to myself.” He tilted the box and pretended to move something aside with a finger. “Here is the understanding that I”—he chuckled softly – “don’t always understand you…But see? I’ve put my willingness to learn right next to it. Here is the sorrow over what happened to you, and the wish that I could make it all better…But then here is all the time in the world you need to heal, along with my full patience to wait until you’re ready. Here is my desire for you that will never fade, regardless of how long it takes before or even if your desire for me returns. Oh…And this is the best one right here. See this?” The captain just smiled at Jon’s dazed expression. “This is my complete and utter devotion to both you and Tom and the hope that I still have the chance to prove myself to you.”

I am seriously verklempt here...

2) Humor. I can honestly say that I don’t recall any outright humor in any of these books until now. And even then I’m not 100% sure if it’s not just my skewed sense of humor or not. But this? This was funny:

Tom knew that Jon was even more sensitive to the chaos that whirled through the captain like a maelstrom. It made him furious that Baltsaros had put them through all of this. At least when he had been killing folks and eating bits of them, he had been in control of himself the rest of the time. And what was this bullshit jealousy he was feeling over the fact that Baltsaros had tried to kill Jon numerous times now but hadn’t once tried to kill him? What kind of stupid did you have to be to ---

This is just a highly recommended series.

I read the boxed set of 3 books and a shortie and binged myself stupid. I had it sitting my library for quite a while before tackling it. WHY DID I WAIT?? It is fantastic. Set in a bygone era, the tale of 3 broken men is woven together into a story of piracy on the high seas, violence, killing, betrayal, innocence, loving, sexing - lots of sexing, hating, brainwashing, bigotry, sorcery, evil acceptance and healing. I started at book 1 and didn't put it down til page 1340. So much goes on, I don't know where to start. It starts with a kidnapping of an innocent and ill young man who is forced to join a band of pirates who have the blood of others running through their veins and an empty space where their hearts should be. The captain and the first mate have more demons than hell itself. But the innocent have a way of breaking down the most hardened of hearts, and so we have a truly beautiful story that is unwrapped layer by layer and book by book until the heartless become the most loving of all. I cant imagine stopping at book 1 so I'd recommend diving in to the box set and going for it

I stayed up way too late to finish the last of this series, and I regret nothing. It takes place after the main trilogy, and should definitely be read after that to avoid significant spoilers. This is important: Deckard could have made this a feel-good bit of holiday fluff, but he instead acknowledges the trauma our pirates have undergone. Jon is in desperate need of healing, and the events of this sweet story make a good start in that.

Do I want another glimpse in the future where Jon, Tom, and Baltsaros live happily (and kinkily) ever after? Absolutely. However, this epilogue of sorts was much more emotionally fulfilling as a reader and leaves me with the solid hope that these ridiculous three men will get there eventually.
