The Power to Capture Stunning Movies and Photographs
24.2 Megapixel Sensor
The EOS M3 features a 24.2 Megapixel (APS-C) sensor capable of capturing large image and movie files. At 24.2 Megapixels, the EOS M's sensor delivers images suitable for enlargements with sufficient resolution for significant trimming. Whether making poster-sized prints, zooming in on a particular detail or making Full HD movies, the EOS M3's sensor is primed to deliver. An ISO range of 100–12800 (expandable to 25600) means images can be captured with low noise and high detail, even in dimly lit situations.
DIGIC 6 Image Processor
Complementing the EOS M3's CMOS sensor, Canon's DIGIC 6 Image Processor not only speeds up camera operations, but also helps enhance a number of the camera's advanced features. The DIGIC processor aids the camera's sensor in capturing detailed images with reduced noise at high ISOs and enables high-quality movie capture with a number of different movie compressions including MP4. On top of that, it enhances the camera's Dynamic Image Stabilization system and even helps improve the AF system's face detection accuracy.
Consistent, Spot-on AF
A fusion of AF technologies designed to quickly achieve and maintain AF, the EOS M3's Hybrid CMOS AF III system is impressively fast, delivering comprehensive and accurate AF coverage over approximately 80% (vertical) and 70% (horizontal) of the entire image. With an optimized phase difference AF sensor built into the EOS M3's CMOS sensor's individual pixels, along with a secondary contrast detection system, the EOS M3's focus system is equipped to focus quickly and accurately in many situations.
Fast, Intuitive Controls
Capable of creating superb stills and movies automatically, the EOS M3 offers a number of control options for speedy manual operation. The camera features a Front Dial that's placed directly around the shutter button and is complemented by a dedicated Exposure Compensation Dial positioned within easy reach of the camera's thumb grip. In addition, the EOS M3 has numerous custom functions, including user-programmable shortcuts, customizable buttons and much, much more. It's comfortable to hold, with a fluid and ergonomic design that's familiar to EOS users.
More Operations at Your Fingertips
3.0” Tilt-type LCD Monitor
The EOS M3 has a large, high-resolution, 3.0” LCD monitor that tilts up 180° and down 45°, ideal for composing not only self portraits, but also for taking pictures at high and low angles with ease.
Intuitive Touch Screen for Selfies and Easy Menu Navigation
The EOS M3's touch screen is not just for defining AF points and for selfies! Designed to be accessible without hindering access to the lens and shutter button, the EOS M3's touch screen is fast and easy to use for many operations. With a Quick Control screen like those found on other EOS cameras and a number of functions superimposed over the image in a “U” pattern, settings are easily accessible without taking a finger away from the shutter or altering your grip on the camera. It's easy to change the camera's settings while maintaining the ability to quickly take a picture.
EOS Compatibility for Creative Control
While a number of lenses and accessories are designed specifically for the EOS M series, the EOS M3 is also fully compatible with over 70 of Canon's EF* and EF-S* Lenses plus other EOS accessories like Speedlites, Speedlite Transmitters and even Macro Ring Lites. Whether the EOS M3 is a primary or secondary camera, it boasts smooth compatibility with a wide range of EOS accessories.
* Mount Adapter EF-EOS M is required.
External Accessories for Advanced Operation
Electronic Viewfinder (EVF-DC1)
In addition to its compatibility with EOS accessories and Speedlites, the EOS M3 is compatible with Canon's high-resolution Electronic Viewfinder EVF-DC1. Easily attached to the camera's hot shoe, the 2.36 Megapixel EVF-DC1 can tilt up 90°, and for photographers who wish to hold the camera up to their eye, it helps the EOS M3 deliver operation and feel similar to that of an SLR. Especially helpful in bright sunlight, or in situations where composing on the screen is not convenient, the EVF-DC1 can be an indispensible accessory for the EOS M3.
External Microphone Jack
For expanded operations including Full HD movie recording, the EOS M3 features not only a built-in stereo microphone but also an external microphone jack that adds a level of versatility and convenience for moviemaking.
Superb Moviemaking Made Easy

I am a casual photographer that enjoys using good amateur equipment. Since 2009 I have been using a Canon SxI DSLR. I decided I wanted smaller gear and already liking Canon cameras I bought the M3. I have not been disappointed except for the battery life. I was aware of the short battery life before I purchased (you have to do your research when buying expensive electronics) so it did not catch me totally unaware. It is not a problem to have a spare battery, but they are expensive.
I set up the camera to use the M-Fn button to switch the ECO mode on and off. This does help. Turning off the continuous AF also helps. But there is no avoiding the fact that battery life is awful.
Over all I really like this camera. I have the Canon EF adapter and allows me to use my EF-S lenses with the M3. AF is a problem with some of the EF lenses, again turning off continuous AF help a lot. The images I have taken so far are sharp and well exposed. The camera and the EF-M kit lens are small, solid, and well built.
The menu's are easy to use if you are used to Canon DSLR's. But coming from one as old as mine was, the number of additional settings was a little overwhelming at first. I have spent several evenings working with the camera and the manual in order to understand how the different options work and the different built-in effects possible. It will take me some time to become completely comfortable with this camera, but this was expected based on my research.
I purchased the EF-M 22mm F2 lens separately. I suggest this lens to anyone purchasing the M3. Laser sharp, quick focusing, and makes the camera somewhat more pocket-able.
I am taking one star off for the poor battery life. Otherwise I have to say that this is a very good and capable camera.
UPDATE* I have been using the M3 for about 3 weeks now and it has really grown on me. I LOVE this camera! With a spare battery there are few problems with the short battery life.
There are 2 things you can do to dramatically increase the battery life.
1. Turn off the continuous auto focus. With this on the camera continually focusing. Wasting battery power for no purpose.
2. Use the ECO setting.
All in all, I think this is a five star camera.
****UPDATE****
I have been using the M3 for a little over 1.5 years and I really have learned to like it a lot. Much easier to carry around than an SLR and is a large improvement from my Canon XSi.
The battery life has not turned into as big a problem as i was afraid it would be. I agree with the person that commented on my review about the cost of extra Canon batteries, but I chose to make the investment just the same. They are small and easy to pocket, so it hasn't been an issue.
Image quality is excellent, and the auto focus is quite good. Not instantaneous, but does a great job!
All in all, this camera has lived up to my expectations completely.
I have read that autofocus of M3 is not good, and that is partially true. However with the native EF-M 22mm f2 lens, autofocus is very fast and accurate. I was able to get well focused shots on the street while walking most of the time. So it's very fast and accurate. I have really no complaints at all about aufocus speed with this lens. My 100mm f/2 worked with M3 great as well. However, my 400mm f5.6 lens focused extremely slowly with M3. The same goes for my 80-200/2.8 lens. Usable only for static subjects.
Regarding image quality, it is a good as it gets for a crop sensor camera from Canon. There's nothing better from Canon. There's not much to say except that is great. It's Canon and that says everything. High ISO performance is great for a crop sensor camera. My 6D (full frame) is better obviously because of full frame. But M3 performs really solidly at high ISO. Colors are great as in all Canon cameras. Dynamic range could be slightly better at base ISO, but as soon as you increase ISO to 1000 or above, it is the best in its class. When I say dynamic range could be slightly better at base ISO, this doesn't mean it's bad. It's great, but there's room for improvement. That's all.
This camera really shines with the 22mm f/2 lens, and in my view it's worth buying this camera only so that you could use this lens. With this lens, M3 is perfect for street photography. Light, compact and with image quality comparable pro grade L zoom glass on full frame. Last, but not least, it's cheap.
