Good pedals. Good Price

Good pedals. Good Price
I started cycling just a little over two years ago and over time I have progressed from platform pedals, to toe clips, and now to clip in pedals. I can say right from the start that I really like the feeling of being connected to the pedals on the upstroke and being able to power most of the way through the cycle. I could really hear the difference when I first put the pedals on the bike I use in my magnetic trainer. No matter how hard I tried to be smooth with platform pedals there was a definite pulsing in my pedal stroke. That seems to be greatly diminished with the use of these pedals telling me my pedal stroke is much smoother.Having gotten used to these pedals while on a trainer and having used toe clips, I haven't had the misfortune of the sideways fall from forgetting to unclip.... yet, but in a sudden situation I can see it happening. In real life application they are very good and keep you feeling connected to the bike. The only fault I could find with these pedals is their balance. When you unclip a foot to stop at a stop sign or traffic light the pedal takes an almost vertical nose up position making it a bit difficult to clip back in. The clips have no grip of their own so if you misalign them you have hard plastic shoe clip on the metal pedal surface and the strong likelihood that your foot will slip off trying to get started before you can get clipped in. If you are going to use these anyplace where you may have to frequently unclip it may be a good idea to pay a few extra dollars for pedals that balance level. Or maybe learn to do a strong one pedal acceleration and then clip in.

I placed these on my spinning bike to test them out; its winter here & snow is covering the ground, so I had to try them before the season starts in a couple of months.
I noticed on Shimano's website these are a "standard tension adjustment" & the tension is nearly perfect. I did adjust to the middle line on the tension "window" at first thinking that they may be somewhat light but definitely not; I reset them to lowest then adjusted from there & for me it was about 3 clicks down, which was perfect!
I lined up the cleats on the shoe sole to my specs then jumped onto the spinner & away I went; I pulled up as hard as I could on my upstroke with a good deal of resistance & the cleats/shoes held tight; unlike the M-Wave that I previously tried (see review of M-Wave). But, with a quick outward twist of the heel the cleat disengaged. When reinserted there was a definite click that told me the cleats engaged & again I worked on my upstroke to see if I would come out of the pedal but not at all. No front to back play or up/down play. These are secure pedals; plenty of tension if needed & I can get some real power in my upstroke. I did get the black just because, well, they are less expensive then the white, my bike is black, my shoes are black & my shorts are black. Now I'll be ready to put them on my road bike come spring thaw but for now I will really do some tough spinning!
The price, I guess is right in there & as the description says they come with SPD-SL 5 degree cleats.
Not since the 90's have I had clipless pedals & now I realize what I was missing with toe-clips, the upward power stroke with my feet & not with the top of my feet!
I would highly recommend these pedals! The exceed the M-Wave but cost about $10 to $20 more but well worth it!
They go well with my GIRO Treble II black "patent leather like" shoes, too! I also got cleat covers, KOOLCOVERS.

03/24/15
Still using these on my spinner; holding up well; the tension on the release mechanism has not been changed & is holding well when needs to & releases well when I need to release! Great pedal!

Keep the Roll Going!!

This review is coming from someone who rides road bikes during the weekend and a single speed bike to school during the weekdays. I've been using this pedals on my single speed bike and it's been amazing. It's a little heavy but that's what you expect from $40 pedals. The deal is really good since it comes with cleats as well. I bought this in March and since then I've road every weekday for about 10 miles. I also used these during bike marathons and events like LA critical mass where we would stop frequently and sometimes we had to stop incredibly fast. At first its a little hard to unclip but you get used to it after a few adjustments or just experience. For those new to clipless pedals, its not hard to learn. It took me about 2-3 rides from my house to school to get used to it when I first started using them back a few years ago. . My tip is to always unclip a few yards from where you think you're going to stop. The endurance of the cleats is pretty good. I've finally changed my cleats after 3 months of use. I've used the cleats like crazy, clipping in and out many time because I was forced to stop many times while biking through school or because of events like the LA critical mass. I've also used my cleats as breaks sometimes because I'm used to riding with flats when I ride fixed so I would use my feet as brakes and burn the bottom of the shoe. The pedals are good and I had no problems with installation. Its very easy to install and uninstall.

First off, for anyone considering clipless pedals, the simple answer is, they are night and day for a cyclist. I rarely ride for leisure, but I commute to classes by bike and I'm a competitive cyclist. Of course as a college student I look at the price before anything else and not only was the price very reasonable (compared to other similar pedals). Clipless pedals will not only allow you to go faster, they'll increase your confidence on the bike (once you get comfortable with them anyway lol), and allow you to be more versatile. One of the main things I like about clipless is that it gives me the option to "pull up" on the pedals (which uses a different set of muscles) making it easy to transition when tired or when I want to climb a hill faster.

Finally, for anyone who questions the durability of these pedals, trust me when I say don't question it :) . I weight 225lbs, on top of the fact that I'm a sprinter as a cyclist (I can put a lot of strength and power into the pedals when I want to); I'd gone through 4 different sets of flat pedals (ONE OF THEM ALL METAL!) with each one breaking at some point. These pedals are built to last because even with my weight and power as a factor (and several crashes, including during races ;) ) these pedals are still holding up 9 months after buying. Simply put, these pedals are an investment that even the secptial buyers (like me) can stand behind with confidence!

I am new to road bikes and don't ride too often (riding about 2 months and about 15 mi/week) and these work pretty well for me. It took a little bit of practice and falling to get use to clipping in and out, but it is fairly easy once you get the hang of it. Installation was a breeze once I got a pedal wrench - I demolished the other pedals trying to get them off with a crescent wrench. My only complaint is that the cleats come loose often and I need to tighten it mid-ride (happened on my recent two rides). Though, this could probably be due to the shoes I am wearing - I picked up some affordable Pearl Izumi shoes. All-in-all, it's great for new & casual riders.

I love these clipless pedals. They can be adjusted to each cleats if you prefer a tight or looser clipping in or out. My bike shop had me sit on my bike and clip in and out, while adjusting to my comfort and manageability. They’re strong too.
