, but you will go back and look for it, because it's your new go to knife
It is very sharp, sturdy, and just seems very reliable. I cannot speak of longevity yet as I just got it a week ago but after using it for a few times it's just one of those things that feels like will last forever.
Now, to be clear, this is not the best fixed-blade knife in the world. You can easily spend hundreds of dollars on a custom knife from a well known manufacturer and it would obviously be a higher quality knife. For the price the quality of the Companion is fantastic. This is a well made, sharp blade that you don’t have to worry about messing up because if you do you can just buy another one.
That’s not to say that it’s easy to mess up this knife. Thanks to the material and the construction, this knife is a tank, easily batoning through wood and still retaining a decently sharp edge. When it does start to dull, it can easily be sharpened thanks to its Scandinavian grind creating a built in angle to follow with your sharpening stone. It comes almost razor sharp out of the box as well, meaning you don’t have to mess around with improving its edge before you can use it.
I would definitely recommend this knife. For the price you are not going to find a better fixed blade on the market.
I previously had a Mora Companion in carbon steel but I didn't take proper care of the blade. When I used apple cider vinegar to force a patina, I didn't dry it well enough and it developed some corrosion which would not scuff off with light abrasives. So that's my beater knife now.
When it was time to buy a gift for a rookie wildland firefighter, I decided to build a bushcraft kit.
This time I went for orange (visibility), stainless steel (requires less care) and the HD version which has a noticeably thicker spine and a chunkier grip. I bought two, one for the gift and one for me.
I did research some of the more expensive models and almost chose a Kansbol. In the future I think I will commit to a Garberg for myself, but since it was a gift for a pretty green outdoorsman I decided to stick with the Companion which is an unbeatable value.
I was a bit worried from some of the reviews that it might be too chunky, but I found I liked it better than the standard Companion! The extra material in the blade is substantial and I feel confident that this knife can withstand a substantial amount of abuse.
All the reviews agree. It's basically impossible to go wrong with these things.
