The Gr10 Trail: Through the French Pyrenees Paperback – November 1, 2004

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

Guidebook to the GR10, a 955km trek across the French Pyrenees from Hendaye on the Atlantic Coast to the Mediterranean coast at Banyuls-sur-Mer. Described in 55-day stages of 7-27km, the route can be completed in its entirety, usually in around 45 days, or in shorter sections using the bus and rail links found throughout the Pyrenees.

Step by step route descriptions are accompanied by 1:100,000 mapping and gradient profiles. Useful practical information is also included such as when to go, getting there and back, camping, accessing fuel and water, plus handy equipment tips and more.

The easiest, oldest and most popular of the three long-distance routes that traverse the mountain range, the GR10 is well waymarked and follows good mountain paths. For many walkers, the highlight of the route is the magnificent wildflowers and associated butterflies. For others, it's the spectacular mountain terrain, while those keen on bird watching will delight in scanning the sky for the many varieties of birds of prey that can be seen in the region, from the massive Griffon vulture to the distinctly coloured Egyptian vulture.

The preferred guide to the GR10 - our French walking companions deferred to it over the local guide books. Good detail on the most part, and compact! We used this as a general overview for each day's walk and the 1:25 000 series on trickier legs of the route.

Great information. I'm using it for an upcoming trip. The timing of the trip made it difficult for me to find the best section to hike, but the information of this book fixed that problem.

It's out of date and very vague. Didn't help me at all.

Good trail guide - could have more accommodation info and is getting somewhat dated. Used on the GR10 sections hike (Cauterets to Bagneres de Luchon) in September, 2015. Generally accurate, but having an accurate GPS track on your phone/tablet/Garmin/etc. very helpful in some sections - most importantly in towns where the author's directions can be a bit confusing especially on complex parts of the trail. As usual in Europe on the GR routes I've experienced, the problem is not finding the trail but selecting which trail is the GR route. Definitely worth the money as an overall guide. Times will be highly dependent on hiker's stamina, as usual, so should only be taken as a relative guide, as author was clearly quite fit!

Excellent book, I am planning to use it in my 2 month trip from coast to coast next year. Lots of details important for serious as well as novice traveller. Author knows Pyrenees very well and makes this guide The best thing you may have with you during the hike. Excellent maps and beautiful photos.

The guide arrived quickly even though I had to get it sent out to France.
My husband was actually walking this long footpath and I was able to follow him daily by the stages in the book.
A brilliant guide! The sites and gites d'etape were great.

Used in Summer 2015. This book is now quite out dated, it is now easier and simpler to follow the red and white markings of the GR10 all the way across (and possibly using a couple of up to date French maps which are very useful) the directions are more confusing than useful, the information about towns really needs updating so gaining supplies was a bit questionable occasionally!
If you can understand enough french or are prepared to learn, the French guides are worth your money!

Like most guide books, out of date before they are published. The basics - accommodation, services, terrain etc, change all the time. Wish there was a live site updating information on a subscription basis. Better idea to go with a book...maybe leave space for update notes before departure and include a subscription with the book...
