Product Description
CLEAN SHAVE
The two-part die-cast razor head has been expertly engineered to deliver a shave that is gentle on the skin but still very close and smooth. The classic Edwin Jagger closed comb head is chrome-plated and hand-polished before delivery. Famous among the wet-shaving community, this razor boasts an excellent reputation for the expert level of shaving it achieves.
PREMIUM QUALITY
Machined from solid brass, triple-plated and hand-polished, the Edwin Jagger DE89L has an elegant and sophisticated metallic design. The handle is finished with an attractive scratch-resistant lined chrome plating, with 'EDWIN JAGGER' proudly engraved on the collar.
CLASSIC DESIGN
With an overall length of 3.7", this is a standard-sized razor. The practical 3.3" handle is designed to be easy to use with great levels of maneuverability and agility. The handle is light and small, but the head is heavy, which keeps you from taking a chance and cutting yourself, while still giving you the control you need to achieve a close, professional shave.
PROFESSIONAL RESULTS
At 2.4oz, this is a decently weighted razor, providing a reliable shave. Slightly heavier than common disposable razors, you can use the extra weight to your advantage and allow the agile razor to glide across your face without having to apply pressure. This means fewer cuts, less irritation, and a smoother shave overall.
This Collection combines the latest technology and traditional techniques to produce elegant razors. Balance and shape ensure professional shaving experiences every day.

Once I popped it out of the cardboard container I was quite surprised. The heft is pretty weighty in the hand, but it is extremely well balanced. This concerned me a bit. The foremost thought was that it would be too heavy to properly shave with. After all, I am coming from the world of disposable razor cartridges (Mach 3). Secondly, I was struck by the craftsmanship. The fit to my hand is just right in a normal shaving grip, upside down, and cross-face orientations. Viewed from any angle the chrome finish is gorgeous, and although the handle is chromed it is textured with a lined pattern so it stays grippy even wet or when shaving cream is on your fingers. You might think that the only thing that could make it better would be if it were a butterfly-type head, but when it comes to dependability and resistance to wear and tear I'll take the Edwin Jagger's simple screw-on method versus one that has moving parts any day of the week.
Without any sort of "purchaser bias", I can honestly say the razor performs superbly. My typical shave is in the shower with no mirror, so I jumped right into it with my new double edge safety razor. This might seem scary to some, but with practice you'll know the contours of your face by using your touch to check for missed spots. I admit, even with years of no-mirror shaving, that I was a little nervous. The end result of the first shave was excellent! It was all baby butt smooth, no nicks, and just a 1/2" circular spot of razor burn (went away by mid-day), which wouldn't have happened but I held the handle too loosely on a tricky part.
Economy was another consideration I had when making the switch. Let's see, a Gillette Fusion 16 pack for $41.25 or Derby DE Razorblades 30Ct for $5? No contest! In a very short amount of time, in fact the first time you need another package of cartridges, the Gillette becomes much more costly. As time goes on the division of value gets even larger.
A quick piece of advice: be confident! More nicks will happen from your uncertainty than anything else. Just be aware that what you're holding is many times sharper than cartridge razors and to treat it accordingly. Two weeks in of daily shaving and I haven't had any nicks or cuts. Also, be sure to change the blade when you start to notice a less smooth shave. There is no proscribed time other than ~4ish days, but it can vary, based on your facial hair. Some people have lots of hair that is soft, so they can go 5 or 6 days. I don't have that much, but each individual hair is very course and thick so I replace the blade at the beginning of every 5th day. While others have a ton of course thick hair and need to replace the beginning of the 4th day.
Quick summary: I couldn't be happier with this purchase. I've got a great looking piece of kit that gives me a smooth shave every time. Plus, traveling around to other countries is infinitely more simple with the Edwin Jagger than a cartridge razor. You can always find DE razor blades around at extremely cheap prices, compared to the hassle of finding the right cartridge for your handle or the need of buying another handle with cartridges because they don't carry what you need.
This is a great razor. I can see why leisureguy's guide to gourmet shaving, recommended this for beginning safety razor users. I would imagine this is also a great razor for experienced shavers, but I am not there yet. I have been an electric shaver for 20+ years with the occasional foray into the multibladed cartridge razor. I must say I was a little frightened of going into the safety razor side of shaving with all the stories of learning curve nicks and cuts.
My concerns of using the safety razor where soon to be relaxed. Don't get me wrong I agree that you definitely have to be present during the process of shaving with this razor, but nothing as scary as what I was expecting, but I get ahead of myself.
Let's start with the razor itself. First surprise. The box was simple and classy, but it was much smaller than what I was expecting, I am so used the the Schick cartride razors with long handles (necessary to lever and apply pressure to the shaving head) that I was quite surprised to see how short it was. As soon as I held it, the weight and balance was very apparent. The packaging was simplistic and stylish, wrapped in tissue paper, it does give you the feel that you purchased it from a small shop in England. The craftsmanship is superb, I took apart and inspected, no tool marks, and fit was perfect. Blade was installed easily and sat evenly, unlike some reviews I have read with other razors where the blade did not sit symmetrically. My wife came home and saw it on the chrome stand and even commented how classy it looked.
Now for the shave. It comes with 5 derby blades. The shave is done with these and since this is my first shave with a DE razor, it will be based on this. Initially very concerned with making sure I achieved the right angle so as not to butcher myself I was pleasantly surprised to find that the curve of the razor top and the safety bar pretty much guide you. It was much easier than I had thought. The blades are extremely sharp and in fact if I hadn't read to listen to the hairs being cut I would have thought I had to shallow of an angle. This was an amazing smooth shave. I nicked myself twice in three passes, well I should say I nicked a mole that gets nicked whenever I shave with any blade so that doesn't really count (although I must say I didn't even feel it happen, cartidge razor usually makes me flinch here), the second nick was my fault again as I found myself applying a bit too much pressure while shaving over a traditionally rough patch for me (not because I needed to but out of habit from my old razor).
Overall I had a great first shave. I highly recommend this razor. I will continue to update as I gain more experience with this shaver, I also am awaiting a sample blade pack so that I can experiment with different blades.
Update: Am Still trying blades, but I do recommend that you also go through the sample packs to find the right blade for you. While I thought the Derby blade that came with the razor were very good, it turns out that while delving into my first sample pack I have already found blades that greatly enhance the shave and performance of this razor. This is a great razor, I highly recommend it, and have already send one to my brother, who is now a DE razor convert as well.
I also highly recommend you take the time for beard prep prior to shave. There is a noticeable improvement in shave closeness and reducing razor burn with pre shave prep. I have started using the edwin jagger preshave lotion which has even further improved the experience, and it just feels good.
And for all of you old hands out there, thanks for all the posts, reviews and blogs. It has been a great help.

The initial high cost is more than worth it since It will probably end up saving me thousands of dollars over my life. I don't foresee myself ever needing to replace it (will update this review if I do).
