As advertised, the was ready to use in less than a minute. It did project hot water droplets, even with the steam bonnet on, at times, so I would recommend using distilled water on delicate fabrics. Due to its compact size, the water receptacle does need to be refilled after 2 men's, long-sleeve shirts, size x-large (or one very wrinkled large shirt). However, given how well it works, it wasn't an issue.
It does weight at least 7 lbs, so it does get tiring steaming for extended periods. Otherwise, no issues. It fit perfectly in my mid-sized, carry-on luggage.
For background, anyone who's worked apparel will be familiar with the ubiquitous Jiffy 4000 , a steamer that's build like a small tank and steams for days. Other than a bi-annual cleaning , this thing runs forever without a hiccup. And if you've done runway work you probably know Jiffy's Esteam - a handheld I would bet my life on... or at least my career (and have!). So what Rowenta promised is the 1500-watt power of the Jiffy 4000 in an Esteam size. I've heard this before, and it's never panned out.
To its credit, Rowenta delivers on its promises. Water boiled in 32 seconds from room temperature and steamed for just over ten minutes when left to run. Its broad, metal head seems to inhibit the Esteam's only flaw: steam condensation on the steaming surface (which leads to spotting). Of course the metal head means sensitive fabrics like silk and rayon should probably use the attachable steam bonnet, which is unnecessary on the plastic Esteam.
Any steamer can smooth a knit, so I ran it through a couple of my more bastardly fabrics: a wool-blend suit and a linen-cotton woven oxford. It handled the suit with the ease of a full-power steamer, pushing steam deep and relaxing the fabrics quickly. For a handheld it is very impressive. I've attached before-and-after pics of the oxford, which the Rowenta also handled very capably.
If you're a steamer-user, you already know the rest and can skip to the next paragraph. If you're new to steamers and are looking for an alternative to ironing, let me here add that a steamer is not an iron. It is good at loosing fabric weaves so they relax and unwrinkled. The looser the weave, the better the result. Fabrication also plays a huge role in the result, as can other make factors. A steamer will not press fabrics, though, like an iron. So if you're looking to get that crisp, sharp look of a freshly-pressed shirt from a steamer, it ain't gonna happen. If you want a quick ironing alternative for loose-weave or treated fabrics, or a semi-pressed look for semi-casuals, this is a great device.
So why four stars instead of five? Because it still has a couple design quirks to fix. First is that most steamers have an easily-filled reservoir while the Rowenta uses an archaic rubber-tabbed stopper that reminds me of an old 90's squirt gun. The water container is slightly-translucent, so when filling you can see the water line, but once back on the machine it looks opaque and is stylistically designed to blend with the overall aesthetic. While this makes a prettier design, it's functionally challenging because it's difficult to tell how much water remains in the reservoir while in use. The trigger also has a lock on it, but I found it difficult to hold the machine without pulling the trigger anyway so it feels like an unnecessary feature.

Prep time is less than 5 minutes - unraveling the cord, filling the water reservoir, plugging it in and waiting 45 seconds to heat up - I do all that, hang up my garment and boom goodbye wrinkles!
So far I've only used one attachment (the soft fabric style one), but I'm sure I will learn to use the others over time. It sporadically leaves a water spot or two, but those dry in less than 1 minute so I don't really have a problem with that. The trigger you hold for water locks into "constant use mode" basically every time and I don't realize until I go to put it down, but that's not a big deal for me either. Yes, the water reservoir is small, but I don't use this on an abundance of items at once, I bought it for its mobility and convenience not to steam 100 garments at once. I use the water out of my bathroom sink (city water). The cord is plenty long enough for me and has a nice velcro strap for wrap-up storage.
I personally have no complaints about this product and would recommend it to anyone and everyone!
I absolutely love this steamer - It's a time-saving, hassle-free, life changer for me!!
