Full Touch Screen on the road! High quality image, very clever design of protective cover and stand. Winner for road warriors!
The On-Lap 1530I is quite a remarkable portable touch display! As I type this I am using the On-Lap for the first time during a two week business trip in Asia in combination with my ThinkPad Yoga 12.5, and it's working really well!My use case is for longer business trips where, for better or worse, work must be accomplished in both a hotel room and the local office, and in the hotel, I wanted a dual screen dual touch setup. I've been a touch screen/tablet PC user for over a decade, so I'm now much more efficient with touch screens as part of my workflow than with keyboard and mouse alone. Further, I have dual touch screen setups at both home and office, so I REALLY appreciate and utilize the extra screen real estate of dual or triple screens. The net is that I needed a portable screen that was also touch enabled to be more efficient when on the road. The combination turns out to be rare, but a bit of searching turned up the Gechic On-Lap 1503I. Order placed, screen received, packed in my carry on.So, here I am in Singapore looking out over the Bay and working with a fully touch enabled dual screen setup from my hotel room! Excellent!Setup was quite easy, but do note, this is NOT USB EzLink type display where power, video signal and touch all pass over a single USB3 connection. I have one of these from Asus ASUS MB169B+ 15.6" Full HD 1920x1080 IPS USB Portable Monitor that I was using before the On-Lap 1503, and, while inexpensive and helpful during travel, it lacked both touch and overall display quality. The On-lap is superior in every way except for the simplicity of the single USB connection. Further, the Asus developed a vertical row of bad pixels within a couple of trips, so was not tough enough for me. Of course I try to take very good care of these portable screens when traveling, but the screen still has to hold up under travel conditions.I have the On-Lap connected in the following way: First, power in via the supplied USB C to dual USB A cable. USB A end goes into USB 3 hub connected to my laptop. Other USB A end goes to iClever boost cube [Dual Quick Charge 3.0] iClever BoostCube+ 36W Dual USB Wall Charger, SmartID Charging Compatible Quick USB Charger for iPhone 7/iPad, Samsung Galaxy S7/S6/Edge, Note 5/4, LG G5, HTC and More(IC-BC01). While I could have used the included USB brick, I was already using the boost cube for it's multiple outlets. Working fine. Second, HDMI out from my TP Yoga into 1530I via the included cable. Turned on the On-Lap, and everything from there was plug and play. Drivers loaded automatically for the screen and touch (laptop is Win7 Enterprise, would guess Win10 would work at least as well). Hot keyed to my External-Display-Presentation settings for two displays in Display Fusion Pro and I was up and running with full dual screen, dual touch setup!Ran some quick tests of the touch sensitivity and use with both finger and capacitive stylus (not included, used the pretty good Wacom Bamboo Wacom Gen. 3 Bamboo Stylus Duo with ballpoint pen for Kindle Fire, iPad Pro, iPad, Windows tablets & Samsung Galaxy (OLD MODEL)). TOUCH/NAVIGATION response to finger and stylus is excellent! Ability to draw with either finger or stylus is good, though not as good as the Wacom Digitizer + Lenovo Active Stylus on my ThinkPad Yoga. Note that the On-Lap does NOT include a digitizer layer, nor does it claim to. Thus, if I need real pen and paper like drawing accuracy, I use the TP screen. The On-Lap is very good with a stylus given that it does NOT have a digitizer, update speed when marking/inking with either your finger or a capacitive stylus is fast enough to do basic mark-up like circles, arrows, even a bit of slightly squigglie text, but not for any kind of serious drawing or note taking.Pros+ Excellent image quality at full HD resolution. Plenty of brightness, fine pixel size, good saturation, accurate color. All superior to the Asus MB169B++ High quality Touch capability, good with capacative stylus. Navigation Excellent. Markup/annotations Good (about as good as I've seen for capacitive screen). Text notes OK, but not great. Not for serious drawing or note taking.+ VERY complete kit, everything you need to use on the road!+ EXCELLENT protective cover, survived in my carry on and once, in my CHECKED bag! Of course, was carefully padded by clothing, but the design of the screen + cover is both robust AND compact.+ Super clever magnetic stand, best I've ever seen for utility plus compactness.Cons- Two wire/three connection setup required for Power, Video Signal + Touch signal. Not difficult, but not as simple as single USB connection like EzLink screens.- Must carry the "propriety" video cables (described as proprietary in the manual, though I've not investigated this) and not loose them. Simple enough, but on the road, if you do loose them, may be difficult to replace. I have all the cables/charger/manual that came screen packed in the smallest Eagle Creek zip pouch, so not too worried, added space required is quite modest.Included a photo of the screen next to my laptop screen. Of course, photos of computer displays are never great, but it will allow you to get a feel for both the setup/size, and, relatively, the quality compared to my laptop screen, which is very good.I did not deduct any stars for the cons, as they are VERY worth it to me to have a truly portable, touch enabled second monitor with high image quality. If your needs are similar, highly recommended!
