Product Description
A green lawn is a healthy lawn, and a healthy lawn is a product of a thriving ecosystem within your soil. That’s why Safer Brand has created Lawn Restore II – an organic fertilizer that immediately goes to work to ensure the proper balance of natural elements in your soil, in turn giving you a healthier, greener lawn in just 3-5 days. Backed by over a quarter-century of research and development, this formula is the best choice for any turf; use it to promote greening in fresh sod, or bring life back to existing grass. And since Lawn Restore II covers twice the square footage of the original formula, it’s more economical than ever before. Organic lawn care does not have to mean expensive lawn care. Ringer Lawn Restore II covers twice the amount of land as the original Lawn Restore formula as well as other leading organic fertilizers. And Safer Brand did not have to sacrifice effectiveness; Lawn Restore II delivers the same great results as the original formula, while cutting the cost for you in half. Your grass feeds off of nutrients in your soil that are produced by beneficial bacteria and fungi. Organic fertilizer feeds that bacteria and fungi so that they can naturally produce those nutrients that your grass needs to flourish. Other synthetic fertilizers directly feed the grass, not only neglecting the beneficial bacteria and fungi, but killing them off. Without these organisms in your soil, your grass cannot survive on its own. Rather than disrupting your soil’s valuable ecosystem, Lawn Restore II promotes it, giving you a healthy, weed-free lawn, naturally. Not only does Lawn Restore II make your lawn greener and fuller above ground, but it also promotes a deep, strong root system below ground. Strong roots are necessary in the long-term health of your turf, protecting it from drought, diseases and maintaining a natural flow of healthy nutrients to your grass.

The soil is not the best in our yard. Most is clay while other sections are sand! Since we moved in five years ago, we have been seeking to do our best to keep our yard green, lush and full. For the first year we used synthetic fertilizers. The past few years we used nothing but Milorganite. This year we moved to Lawn Restore 2. In my mind here is why Lawn Restore wins out! But first some words on why organic.
ORGANIC?
Why organic? I really don't care if a product is natural or synthetic. I just want what works. When we put down synthetic it worked but only while the product lasted. In other words, our soil was givin the nutrients rather than producing the nutrients. So, when the granules completely resolved after an extended time (2-3 weeks), the soil had nothing left to give feed the grass. The yard then NEEDED more synthetic food or it would go south pretty quickly. Once I switched to organic the soil was given food rather than the grass. In other words, the soil was given organic food that the soil had to break-down with bacteria. The soil thus had all the living organisms to feed the grass naturally. The natural fertilizer took more time to initially green, but lasted much longer because of healthy soil. The yard is MUCH more resilient to drought, heat and neglected care because the soil is no longer like a dead sponge that has to be given its food.
Let me put it this way. High nitrogen fertilizer burns and kills the natural bacteria and living organisms in the soil. Natural fertilizer feeds them and causes them to thrive. The difference is similar to my human body. Would I rather have energy because I have a buzz from a Redbull or would I rather have energy because I had a good nights sleep and a healthy breakfast? The more of the latter makes for a much helthier me in the long run. I noticed the same difference in my yard once I switched to the organic fertilizers.
OK, now that this is out of the way, let's get to the comparison between two organic fertilizers: Milorganite vs. Lawn Restore.
WHICH WORKED QUICKER?
The very first time I used each product they took two weeks before I saw results. This is because it took that long for heat and water to break down the product and get those natural processes thriving in the soil. If the fertilizers are used subsequently howeve (while the soil is still actively decomposing the previous feed) then it only takes 2-3 days to see the effect.
WHICH GREENED BETTER?
When I switched to Lawn Restore I was concerned that the lack of iron (Milorganite contains iron) would cause the greening effect to be not as dark. To my surprise there has not been a difference! I don't understand this because iron is needed for a dark green. But in practice, Lawn Restore greens every bit as much as Milorganite but lasts longer.
WHICH LASTS LONGER?
Both fertilizers say to use every two months. My experience with Milorganite was that it looked its best only for a period of 2 weeks. In other words, once laid, it took about two weeks to look good, but the look only then lasted for two weeks. Ideally then, spreading it every two weeks would have kept my lawn looking awesome. I could only afford monthly however. As a result, the lawn looked tired for the first couple of weeks of the month before the Milorganite kicked in. Lawn Restore, on the other hand also took two weeks to look good initially. The difference is that the look lasted 6 weeks! No kidding! A full month and a half of lush green. I discovered that if I spread it every six weeks then there is no gap. Indeed, Lawn Restore is slow release!
WHICH SMELLS WORSE?
Milorganite is literally little granules of cooked turd. It's smell (fortunately) is subtle. Basically, your yard smells like a farm for a couple of days after laying it down. The smell is worse when it is hot out. Lawn Restore is composed of dried flakes like an oatmeal or a smaller variation of Frosted Flakes. It smells like baby formula. Not entirely pleasant, but not revolting either. The difference, is that Lawn Restore smells when you lay it, but that is the end of it. Water it down and you will not smell the fertilizer again.
WHICH IS MORE COST EFFECTIVE?
Milorganite cost me about $12 a bag but I needed 4 bags to cover the yard with the recommended amount = $48. To be honest I could not afford this, so I spread half the amount st a cost of $24 per application. In contrast one bag of Lawn restore does my whole yard at its recommend rate. So $28 per application of lawn restore. It's a no-brainier.
CONCLUSION
Both products are unique enough that if I were rich, I honestly would apply both for an INCREDIBLE lawn. But since I am not I am sticking with Lawn Restore. Four applications during growing season. Total cost of $112 for one of the most beautiful and hardy lawns on the block. GREAT!
I finally got fed up and no longer use Scotts or any synthetic fertilizer. Scotts used to have an organic lawn fertilizer called Organic Choice available at Home Depot that I started using then all of a sudden I couldn't find it anymore so I just decided that I'm done with Scotts altogether. In fact I couldn't seem to find ANY organic lawn fertilizer at Home Depot so I started going to Orchard Hardware Supply and buying Espoma Organic Fertilizer. The best time to apply seemed to be in the fall and about 2-3 months before summer. I also started seeding the lawn with the same type of lawn that we have to grow new grass in areas where grass had died and to add more grass to the rest of the lawn. It has been a slow process but I have been working on restoring the soil after reading that synthetic fertilizer over time can adversely affect the health of the soil which can result in lawn issues.
I wanted to order more Espoma Organic Fertilizer online but then found Safer Brand Ringer Lawn Restore II on Amazon. I liked the fact that this organic lawn fertilizer was formulated to restore nutrients in the soil which is exactly what I have been trying to do. Everything in the product description is exactly what I have been looking for. To be honest I was already working on restoring the health of the soil and had been applying other organic fertilizers but still wasn't getting the really deep dark green healthy looking lawn I wanted.
I decided to try Safer Brand Ringer Lawn Restore II. My lawn is probably less than 1500 square feet total but I used a little more than half the bag during my first application about a month and a half ago. This organic fertilizer has NO manure like smell and actually seems to have kind of a beer like smell to me but I couldn't really smell it once applied to the lawn. A few days ago for the hell of it I decided to use the rest of the bag and now all of a sudden within the last couple of days our lawn has been completely overtaken by a really nice deep dark green color. I know I applied far more than recommended but since the nitrogen number is lower than other fertilizers and weather is cool I didn't think it would hurt.
I have been watering about 5 minutes per day since temperatures have been no more than about 60 degrees during the day since it was applied to keep the lawn moist so it will absorb the fertilizer. I did not mow the lawn until 2 weeks later after it was applied since I want to the granules to dissolve and absorb into the lawn instead of the mower picking up the granules. IMPROVING SOIL AND LAWN HEALTH WITH ORGANIC FERTILIZER CAN BE A SLOW PROCESS BUT IS WORTH IT!! For lawns with really unhealthy soil and have had years of synthetic fertilizer use it can take some time to restore soil health and at first you may not see that much of a difference after the first application. Remember that the health of the soil doesn't deteriorate overnight so restoring the health of the soil isn't going to happen overnight either.
My neighbor next door uses synthetic and I'm not sure what brand they use but it seems like they have to apply a lot of it several times a year to keep their lawn green. I know because it seems like I am always having to sweep up the little white granules off the sidewalk and street after they apply it. At first glance they appear to have a nice lawn, "however" if you look close there are weeds and bare spots. They mow their lawn all the time so the weeds are not noticeable unless you look closely. Their lawn has also being overtaken by clovers and weeds on multiple occasions which I believe is due to the synthetic fertilizer they use. Then of course they put more synthetic fertilizer with weed control to get rid of the weeds.
I didn't realize how toxic the synthetic stuff could be until I started reading about it and it seems like so many people are just mindlessly turning their lawns and properties into toxic waste dumps. In addition, many people seem to forget or don't care that this stuff runs off into storm drains and runs off on sidewalks where people walk. I think every Home Depot should carry organic lawn fertilizer since locations near us no longer seem to carry it. I also think it's time for Scotts to start pushing organic lawn fertilizer as much as much as they push the synthetic stuff.
Just to call out that, while there is a higher tolerance against lawn burning (you have less of a chance of over application), the claim that it can't burn your lawn is untrue. You DO still need to pay attention to how much is spread, and if you're using a drop spreader, be careful of any that spills out unexpectedly. Clean it up right away if you encounter this. See photo for evidence of what I'm talking about (the blue spots are seeds from an overseeding that was done).
