So the principal thing here is going to be the color rendition, yeah the resolution is nice, but it's the way this thing renders colors that really is amazing. You've got 2 types of media, standard, and HDR. Standard media views like a photograph, literally. By photography I mean, the black levels are black, pure black, and the color gradation is perfect. Because this doesn't use a back light panel it is much more conservative on how it illuminates the image. This gives you a more natural look, like a photograph, than say a LCD picture frame. Then when you watch HDR content, its more like looking through a window. Here the content takes full advantage of the contrast it is capable of to simulate the experience of looking at light sources, as opposed to looking at a photo of a light source. Both HDR and non-HDR content looks amazing because it looks like nothing you've ever seen. Only OLED panels can render this way. The only time I get annoyed by one or the other is when a content source flips between HDR and non-HDR color. Christopher Nolan does this by shooting several of his movies on different cameras, some HDR some not. The Planet Earth 2 series I noticed does this often. The issue is that it feels like your panel is dimming when it goes from HDR to standard, most notably when you have a apparently bright scene or a light source in frame and its not using HDR when it was a split second ago. There is not much content that does this, but knowing what is happening will put your mind and heart at ease even if it still is visually undesireable. When you watch a movie like Pacific Rim that is full HDR all the way through, it will spoil you, but that is also the future. Standard still looks exceptional, again that natural coloring really brings to life classic films.
This TV with what will be the last great relevant physical media format of 4K UHD HDR is going to be it for home theaters. I don't think we will see another pertinent update to this style of media before we are getting movies beamed into our brains. And my goodness is this glorious, the only improvement left to make is to reduce that price tag.
!Warning! Despite a wafer-thin top half and a comparatively hefty base on the bottom end, the television is surprisingly top-heavy when mounted on its base. When moved around too quickly, it has a tendency to tip towards it’s screen, which is potentially catastrophic but mostly just annoying. Be mindful of this when maneuvering it into place or if you have any pets. I myself am going to secure the set to the wall using bolts compatible with the wall mounting threads and a pair of eye lag bolts connected with 100lb picture frame wire to ensure there are no mishaps. !Warning!
I highly recommend changing the remote’s motion-sensor curser to the supplied LG bird, for the lols.
* Picture quality: Local Dimming helped blacks on the QLED compared to my older Samsung but I felt overall they were doing heavy processing to push contrast and saturation to make it pop. Playing Bluerays is interesting. Samsung is really doing some amazing upsampling from 1080p to 4K. I really liked it at first but the stylized processing started to wear on me. The LG picture felt natural and not heavily processed. It is easy to switch between cinema and sports presets. Dolby Vision and HDR looks great. For example, watching The Man In The High Castle ep. 1, in HDR you can clearly see the red sunrise against the snowy caps on the mountains in the background. Non-HDR it's all blown out.
Remote: Man, that Samsung remote should win a design award. It looks beautiful and there are so few buttons I first thought it was going to suck to use. It's not. For example, volume is a single rocker. Up/down/depress for mute/unmute. The remote is the one thing I *really* miss about the Samsung. LGs remote is fine. It's main standout feature the pointer feature which is kinda like a digital laser pointer. For entering text it's great. Tough I'll more often use speech or the arrow keys to get around.
Drawbacks: The one area that concerned me with the LG OLED is screen burn in. This is a significant issue with this screen since it's an OLED. You can research this issue but for people that primarily watch a single channel TV news (say CNN, or Fox News) or play video games with elements that are onscreen the whole game (health rating) there is a good chance you'll have burn in if you use the TV for 3-4 hours a day after a couple of years. I've decided to watch news or video game on a separate 27" 4K monitor I have except for special occasions. If you don't have this option you might want to pay special attention to this issue when you decide.
