About the StartupDescribe your product in 3 words.
Freedom is Essential
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
I know people are going to ask me a lot of questions about why I started this company. Why didn’t I just travel the world, ride my motorcycle, tinker with my robots, hang out at my bakery with friends and family. And to be honest I still do ask myself that sometimes…but not too often. So why did I create Essential? Well, my hardware engineers wanted me to talk about how we are bringing real passion and craftsmanship back into this category. My software engineers wanted me to talk about our vision for making all devices, even those we don't make ourselves, play well together. My partners wanted me to talk about how we are using methods that could change how successful technology companies are built forever. And this is all true. But the real reason is because of what happened during a night out with an old friend of mine. As the night went on we inevitably began talking about what we didn't like about the current state of technology. Less and less choice. More and more unnecessary features cluttering our lives. An increasing sea of products that didn't work with one another… And just when I was about to drop another criticism it hit me: I am partly responsible for all of this. For all the good Android has done to help bring technology to nearly everyone it has also helped create this weird new world where people are forced to fight with the very technology that was supposed to simplify their lives. Was this what we had intended? Was this the best we could do? I left that night reflecting deeply on what was great and what was frustrating with the current state of technology today. After another long talk with my friend we decided that I needed to start a new kind of company using 21st century methods to build products for the way people want to live in the 21st century.
What makes your product special?
This is what we believe: • Devices are your personal property. We won’t force you to have anything on them you don’t want to have. • We will always play well with others. Closed ecosystems are divisive and outdated. • Premium materials and true craftsmanship shouldn’t be just for the few. • Devices shouldn’t become outdated every year. They should evolve with you. • Technology should assist you so that you can get on with enjoying your life. • Simple is always better.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
I have used the above principles to inform everything Essential is doing and they have helped me attract some of the best and brightest people from all over the world to join me in bringing this vision to life. We won’t achieve everything we hope on day one, but if you’re one of those people who also thinks it’s time for something new, please have a look at www.essential.com to learn more.

My choice for a new phone was between the Pixel 2, the Essential, and the OP5T. I chose the Essential, since the Pixel 2 was too expensive for me (even more so in Germany), and OnePlus couldn't win me with their sometimes shady stuff going on and I also didn't like the design as much.
Thus I imported the Essential PH-1 to Germany, and I so far I've been very happy with it.
I flashed the Oreo beta onto it, and the performance is generally pretty good, I couldn't reproduce most of the common issues with this phone.
I had a lot of random reboots on beta 1 (and also some on beta 2), but those were caused by me rooting the device. A recent Magisk (root) update fixed all issues for me. I only experienced the touch lag/freeze up twice so far on beta 1 (UPDATE: on the final Oreo 8.1, only happens occasionally, and only while charging, so no big of a deal), but each time, just turning off the screen and turning it back on again fixed the problem. I'm going to talk about the rest of the phone in a small list:
PROS:
- Build quality and design: The titanium frame and the glossy ceramic back looks absolutely stunning. The phone also has a relatively high heft to it, which you either like or don't, I think it makes the phone feel really premium.
- The screen: Yes, it's only a LCD, but it's great with perfect sharpness, great colors and good viewing angles. I think I actually prefer it over the AMOLED of my previous 6P. The form factor of the screen with the camera cutout it unique and looks nice in my opinion, and the cutout itself bothers a lot less than you might imagine.
- Software: It's a completely stock Android, the dream of every pure Android software enthusiast.
- Updates and support: Essential proved recently that they stand behind their product. Even though it had a rough start and a lot of software issues at the beginning, they showed their dedication through continuous software and camera updates, bi-weekly AMAs on Reddit, and a general openness to the community.
NEUTRAL:
- No headphone jack: not an issue for me, but might be for some?
CONS:
- Camera. Yep, I had to say it. No, it's not as bad as some reviews make it seem, as it got a lot of updates, but sadly it's not that great either, even if you use the Google Camera port from e.g. B-S-G. The colors just don't feel right, the HDR on my previous 6P was a lot more stunning, and especially in dark lighting there's a lot of noise. Doesn't mean that you can't get really good pictures though from time to time. Definitely note I'm coming from the Nexus 6P, which had an outstanding camera, so my perception might be flawed.
UPDATE: with Gcam on the final Oreo build, it often produces very good photos, provided the lighting is decent enough.
I hope my rather lengthy review could help you in your decision.. so, all in all, even with the small issues I had, I can wholeheartedly give the PH-1 5 stars.
Another PSA on replacement parts availability:
Currently, Essential doesn't sell any replacement parts for it's phone, so GET A CASE! The phone is rather slippery on the back, and tends to slide off flat, slightly angled surfaces (like a tiling ledge in the bath room..).
I heard though that Essential is pretty nice on replacing the whole phone if you pay a small sum.
UPDATE, 16.07.2018:
Another update, after half a year of ownership. I meanwhile flashed the Android P Beta onto my PH-1, which Essential surprisingly released for this phone, joining a very small set of other manufacturers to give a preview of the next Android version alongside Google this year.
For a preview, it has been pretty stable for me (apart from a few sudden reboots), and I'm extremely happy with the update support Essential is giving. Coming from a Nexus with the known-excellent Google support, I highly appreciate this.
It seems that the battery life actually increased in this preview as well, it seems that Android's new "Adaptive battery" works wonders (I got over 8 hours of SOT a few days ago, with only 20 percent recharging in between, playing Ingress afterwards, which is a heavy battery drainer normally).
Also, the general smoothness of the device got noticably better, the animations on P are really nice (even though I still hate the new Android design, lol). If you get this phone, you might want to take a look at the preview program.
I am a phone bargain hunter, so I am always on the lookout for the most hardware I can get in a phone in the sub $400 price range. When it went on sale it fell right into my wheelhouse.
PROS:
*SOLID BUILD: The phone is really solidly built. It says in the description that it was made with premium materials and they're not kidding! Right out of the box the phone had a premium feel to it. In fact it felt heavy compared to the plastic Nexus I had been using for the past 2+ years.
*CLOSE TO FLAGSHIP HARDWARE: It comes with one of the newer processors (SnapDragon 835), 4GB RAM, 128 GB storage (most phones don't offer that large of a storage option or if they do you have to pay more to upgrade), and a decently sized 3040 mAh battery.
*CLEAN OS WITH FREQUENT UPDATES: You get a bloat-free, mostly stock version of the latest Android OS version (Pie). Also Essential is super quick to push out their updates. Each month the OTA (Over The Air) security update hits my phone within minutes of Google releasing it.
CONS:
*NO HEADPHONE JACK: They do give you the 3.5 mm dongle adapter in the box, but that's no good if you want to use old wired headphones and charge at the same time. For some this might not be a big deal but it's at least a minor nuisance to me. They are also saying they'll release a headphone jack module soon.
*CAMERA IS MEDIOCRE: Sad that the camera on my Nexus 5X is much better than the one on this phone. From the research I've done this seems to be a software issue rather than inferior hardware. The stock camera app has gotten better since launch but installing the Google Camera app helps this greatly (Google it for more info/instructions on doing this).
*SIGNAL STRENGTH ISSUES: One of my biggest concerns before buying this phone was all of the reports of inconsistent coverage, especially for those of us on T-Mobile. I have not run into this problem however. I am on T-Mobile and have been using the phone for a couple of months but have not run into this issue. Signal strength is about the same as what I was getting on my Nexus 5X.
*CAMERA NOTCH ON FRONT OF SCREEN: Essential was one of the first manufacturers to start this unfortunate trend. In an effort to maximize screen space they built the camera right in the middle of it. It can be a little distracting when watching videos on it.
*NO SD CARD SLOT: You can't expand the storage space on this phone, although with 128GB on board that should be plenty for most users.
*LONG TERM SUPPORT?: At the moment the company is very active in providing timely updates and responsive to customer questions on social media. There have however been articles stating that the company is in financial trouble. If true support for this phone could end abruptly if the company goes under.
Over all the phone is very snappy. It fit the bill almost perfectly for me. A very powerful phone at a low price. It has a few minor drawbacks but overall I am very satisfied with my purchase. I have installed a modified version of the Google Camera app and that does seem to help quite a bit with camera performance. It's still not as good as the cameras you might find in flagship phones like the iPhone or Pixel, but in my opinion it's still good enough for most daily users.
