Plot: It was simple and sweet. The story was not as fleshed out but I appreciate that they don’t overladen with details. But instead, focused a little more on the couple. The routes were varied enough but can be a bit repetitive since the final goals ended up the same. But you needed to see them all to get the whole story. The guys were such cuties and there was someone for everyone’s taste. Astrum’s was my favorite. Followed by Radius’s. Then Libera’s.
There were two interactions you have with the visual novel. One was when you have to answer to the hero to raise his affection. And the second was when you were in battle. There will be a prompt to ask which action you wanted to take. For most part, there was one correct answer that will raise your Almighty skill. If you don’t have enough by the final chapter, it will be an automatic game over.
The best part was the routes were easier and quicker to achieve. In the few that I have played, you have to go through the same 4 chapters, for all the characters, before diverging to a specific route. However, in Period Cube, after Quest 2, you are already in a specific route. For each character route, it took about 8 hours+. And then, an additional 1.5-2 hours for the bad ending.
Graphics: I love the character designs and also love the fact that the characters sway back and forth, instead being stationary drawings. My only comment would be that their necks must be killing them, having it at that awkward angle all the time.
Technical: The language is in Japanese. The voice acting was spot on as always. I will mention that you can change the heroine’s name, but they will still call you Kazuha. The subtitles are in English. The translation was well done but not always exact to the Japanese. I only found a couple of spelling errors. There were no loading times. And you can easily get 100% completion as long you finish all the character’s routes. There weren’t much extras. The only thing that was unique was the “His Perspective” that can be viewed from the hero’s profile. It was nothing more than a quick snippet of the guy’s feelings for Kazuha (usually on a date). It was very short, nothing detailed and kind of left you wanting more.
Note: This was a fairly clean game. However, there was descriptive violence of characters being killed.
All in all, I was uber addicted the game. I finished it within a week. This is a visual novel. It is pretty much reading, with a few prompts to gain affection points. So, if you are looking for something that is more an adventure/RPG/puzzle based, the game is not meant for you. But for me, I loved it and I’m sad I finished so quickly. I did go back to replay some routes but other than that, I got my money’s worth. Definitely a must for otome fans.
Pros:
- Beautiful Artwork.
- 7 different enjoyable character paths. (I loved every good path but one.)
- Good overarching story about being trapped in an RPG. The concept itself may be a little overused but they added some unique elements that made the game interesting.
Cons:
- The routes feel a little short, but with 7 different paths I feel like this is to be expected.
- Some bothersome plot holes
- Can be a little repetitive, especially when you first start a new path
Personal opinion: *****SPOILERS***** I will try to keep them to a minimum though.
-I hated the Poyo Poyo route. It seemed to heavily suggest that the poor MC was being molested in her sleep, and overall just left me feeling like I should wash my hands after going through it. The good ending wraps up well but I just couldn't shake the creepy, gross feel after everything the character does. However, I have to admit he makes for a damn good villain and I really liked the character in that sense. The best written villains truly believe they are in the right, and I think this game does a good job of making you understand where he is coming from.
- Demento's route is also abusive and I hated it at first as well. However, I feel like at the end of his good path he begins to redeem himself by acknowledging that he's done wrong and accepting that because of the things he's done he doesn't really have a place in the real world anymore. Then goes on to tell the MC that she belongs in the real world, that he had fun with being with her, and most importantly thanks her. In the after ending, he's still rough around the edges but I think, thanks in part to losing his memories, is changed for the better. In his perspective bit, he admits to being afraid of remembering since he can tell that he was someone who "lived off the misery of others." He wants to become a better person, and then maybe he can face the truth of the things he can't remember.
- Between the Poyo Poyo and Demento route what made the difference for me was that Poyo was unwilling to change and it took a "miracle" that had nothing to do with Poyo's personal choices to make a change. Poyo never really shows remorse for the wrongs he's done, or really even shows that he actually cares about the MC's feelings about everything, instead pushes his ideals on her like they were her own and expects that she will see things his way eventually. Demento on the other hand, as the story progresses, acknowledges his wrongs, comes to show that he cares about the MC, and does what he can to send her back to the real world like she wants. He shows a willingness to change even when he himself acknowledges it's too late for his redemption, and that's what set it apart for me.
- I <3 nerdy roll play Astrum. He's such a goober.
Overall, this was a great game and easily one of my favorites in the otome genre.
