I miss the mini map so badly from previous Far Cry games, that showed you where stuff was. There's little to no leafs around (that you need for crafting syringes etc) and if you're not looking..they're EASILY missed. Also, having someone with you to help fight...is the coolest thing ever!. I've only played this game for about 2 hours so far....lots to learn and discover. All in all, I'm enjoying it :)

If you were a fan of Far Cry 4 then there's no reason you won't like the latest incarnation in the series. Not much has changed with the exception of adding NPC teammates that can help you in battle, revive you, and make life a bit easier. Eventually, you'll find yourself going solo as your companions repeat the same five or six lines of dialogue every minute or so and there's no way to turn off their dialogue without just muting the sound. Luckily, there are animal companions that don't talk. I use them quite a bit.
You'll find yourself spending time capturing territories by taking over outposts (fun), completing missions (sometimes fun), and completing fetch quests (not always fun) which will increase the resistance in a territory leading to a confrontation with the region's boss. There are also hunting and fishing challenges, stunt runs, and everything else the Far Cry games have always offered.
There's also Far Cry Arcade, a feature that I haven't used since I'm still mopping up the one or two side missions before tackling the new challenge. Clearly, the game makers want you to play it since so many NPCs will tell you how awesome it is during the solo campaign.
My biggest complaint is the lack of variety in guns, vehicles, and unlockables. Unless your're a completionist, you'll most likely find the three guns that work best for your loadout and rarely switch between them. You can buy others but why bother? As soon as you pick up a gun from the ground it will be available from any seller at no cost. I was hoping there would be more.
Still, a great way to kill a few days with great replay potential.
Positives:
***Big open world with lots of things to do
***You can silence any weapon
***You can hunt and fish
***Dark storyline that throws some surprising twists your way
***A realistic sounding cult religious radio station that sounds like it came straight out of the 1980s
***Hurk
Negatives:
***The story in this game is just implausible. I'm sorry, but this type of scenario couldn't take place even in Montana. Four agents go missing for weeks without contact, and no one comes looking for them? No one in Montana, a land they conceive as full of roughneck, weapon-toting, survivalists couldn't make it over the mountains to get help? No one has a ham radio or a satellite dish?
***This is especially true in light of forced abductions. At several points during the game, one of Seed's lieutenants decides that he or she wants to have a talk with you. When this occurs, within 60 seconds you are caught. So let me get this straight, at any point in the game I can be caught within 60 seconds? Why am I still alive? After getting captured and tortured several occasions, why am I still alive? Not once they couldn't put a gun to my head and end it?
***The endings are just horrible. Just. Horrible. After finishing the "good" ending, I turned off the game and uninstalled it. Why did I waste my time playing this game for the last 25 hours to get an ending like that?
***The weapon physics in this game are inconsistent. Bow, for example, seem to take gravity into account when they are fired. Likewise, it takes often several arrows to kill something. On the other hand, you can silence almost any weapon in the game. A silenced .50 cal sniper? Yep. But if you take the .50 cal and shoot a bear in the head with it, it takes two shots for some reason.
***Stealth is pointless in this game. No matter what skills you have or how careful you are, you get caught. Having to move after every sniper shot? I get that. Shooting everyone dead in a compound with a sniper without the alarm being pulled? Ok, I guess. With either melee or ranged weapons, the most kills you are going to get without alerting the rest of the NPCs is two or three. These guys have superhuman hearing and a 360-degree field of view. It is better to load up with a silenced LMG and your trusty companions (bear and cougar).
***Speaking of companions, they Never. Shut. Up. After about 10 minutes, it became clear that the only companions I could handle for an extended period of time were the bear and the cougar. They are good for drawing fire away from you. Also, forget the dog. He barks and growls all the time, and his tracking sound is annoying.
***Hunting in this game is annoying. You hear the dinging noise letting you know that an enemy or prey is nearby, but good luck finding it. You'll be fighting the UI all the time. My recommendation, hunt at night.
***Why are there no individual sound adjustments for music, voice, etc.? As soon as something dramatic happens, all the sound blends together into a cacophony of annoyance. I had to play the whole game with headphones that separated the sounds internally. Even then, it was hard to hear dialogue at several points.
***Why can I not pause a cutscene? Are none of you guys married? At one point my wife handed me the phone during an important storyline cutscene. I wonder what happened during it? I don't know, because I couldn't pause it.
***After about ten hours, a plane will spawn as soon as you fast travel. I suggest you carry a guided rocket launcher, because those things will annoy the crap out of you.
These are all I can think of at the moment. If you can get it on sale for $30, then its worth the open world for that. Otherwise, you'd be better off going back and replaying Far Cry 4.
