For my purposes this device is serious overkill. But it has a feature, Supersource, that pushed me into the high end of the line when all I really needed was the middle unit. Supersource allows the simultaneous display of 4 sources (in boxes) on top of a fifth source. This kind of layering allows for two-ups when doing remote interviews, etc. and can make for a very professional production.
It works as well as the other two ATEM switchers I owned, and even works with the same software too. It boots quickly, is pretty simple in its operation, and is really more of an appliance as compared to PC based products like the Tricaster. My workflow involves powering it up, sitting down on set, and shooting. There's very little set up needed once you have everything configured.
A few gripes so far:
1. The fans on this thing are ridiculously and unnecessarily loud. This is an unfortunate change from the prior models that were completely silent and fanless. I am going to try to move it as far away from my set as possible but I may have to end up returning this one for the prior model.
2. The Supersource input button does not show up on the software control panel when using it on a PC or Mac with a small display (less than 1920x1080). It does appear if the shift key is held down, but there is no way to configure it on the first row of buttons. This is an easy software fix that I hope BMD implements. My workaround in the meantime is to run it to the second M/E program out and then use that source when shooting. I typically run the ATEM software control on a Windows 8.1 tablet so reaching for a shift key is difficult.
3. Out of 20 inputs on the device only one supports HDMI directly. If you're primarily an HDMI shop you'll need to purchase HDMI to SDI adapters which can get costly. BMD's is close to $300 but I found an inexpensive one from Orei that works just as well.
