Terrible computer but even worse customer service - save your money, time, and sanity and avoid at all costs
If you are considering this craptop, RUN far far away! If the terrible computer doesn't drive you to the end of your rope, the horrible "customer service" sure will. My wife and I decided to buy this based on our previous good experience with a very cheap Asus computer bought almost a decade ago and subsequent poor experiences with Dell computers. What a bitter disappointment it turned out to be! From day one there was nothing but problems with the thing. It ran slower and had more issues than my 9 year old Asus that has only 2GB RAM (no exaggeration). Then there is the issue of it jumping to 100% disk usage for no reason (even while literally not doing anything at all on the computer except trying to open up a folder or simply waiting for it to boot up. There has been a lot of time wasted just sitting, waiting impatiently for the disk usage to go back to normal so the laptop could be used. As if the glacial pace and maxed out disk usage wasn't annoying enough, then there was the insanity that is the fan. It would randomly (and almost always) kick on and run very high and very loudly even during the most mundane of tasks such as checking your email. Even though this is a gaming laptop, I didn't buy it for gaming... I bought it because I wanted to have a separate graphics card after having an issue with my relatively new Dell where Windows updates would mess up the on board Intel HD Graphics 5500, leaving that laptop useless until months would pass and they would release a fix, then mess it up again with the next update, etc. My wife does play the Sims 4 some but not often and she also does some light photo editing as well but the computer really couldn't handle even that. More time was spent waiting for it boot up and then the disk usage to die down than time spent using it. We were thinking maybe if we could find out what startup programs to disable that would help but we didn't get the opportunity. Instead, after being notified of driver updates and a BIOS update which were completed, the computer restarted and installed the BIOS update and then would no longer boot up. It would immediately go into self diagnostic mode but then say it was unable to repair it. Every option was tried (safe boot, reinstall Windows, etc.) but nothing would work, so I contacted Asus who had me send it in for repair as it is under warranty. Here is where things get very shady. After a week or so, I was contacted by Asus saying the computer was unable to be repaired becauseit was damaged (with no information on what kind of damage) and there would be pictures to follow separately. The pictures were then sent along with this message: "If you suspect damage may have occurred to your product during shipping, you may contact your courier to initiate the claim process. Please note if there was no obvious indication of shipping damage to the original packaging, the packaging would not have been retained. If you do initiate a claim with your courier, please contact us as soon as possible so we may notify our repair facility." So what is this? They are trying to pass the buck unto the FedEx? The absurd part about this is that the pictures looked like burn marks on the INSIDE of the computer(see attached photo taken by them)...how could the courier have done that? Furthermore, how could I make a claim of damage against a courier with no proof? There was no further information of what was going to happen so I contacted them today to find out what happens next. The guy then tries to tell me the computer had liquid damage (uhh NO) and they can't repair it because it isn't covered under warranty. He then says he sees we have ADP warranty (accident damage protection) and that it could get repaired under that but that it would be a one time only thing. I told him there was no liquid damage and that it worked (albeit with the aforementioned issues) until it updated the BIOS and would never boot up/load windows again. So, he tells me I have to call in and contact some CID department and dispute that. I cannot believe what BS this is. They were first trying to blame the courier and then trying to blame us to avoid taking responsibility for their subpar piece of trash product. If there was liquid damage they would have had to have done it after they received it for repairs because we have never spilled anything on it (and damage was solely on the inside mysteriously) and it worked (albeit slowly) up until that BIOS update. This is NOT customer service and it certainly isn't customer service on a laptop that costs over $1000! I will never purchase another Asus product again regardless of the final outcome of this disaster and if you want to keep your sanity, I would advise you do the same.Pros:A very nice screenBeing able to pick keyboard colors was coolROG gaming center looked cool (but was basically useless for me).Cons:Customer "service" (more like non-service)Some of the keyboard keys were in odd positions compared to what I am used toFan that sounds like a 747 jet engineExtremely slowCrippling unexplained disk usageExpensive for a loud, slow, more often than not non-functioning computerAsus "gift center" that comes pre-loaded (aka bloatware) - it's misleading so you think things are free but most aren'tTouchpadSimply put, avoid this computer (and company) at all costs, save up a little more and buy something a lot better if you need a gaming laptop. Avoid Asus altogether unless you are a masochist and thrive on bitter disappointment and don't mind waiting more than using the laptop and love having to contact customer service multiple times over the same thing.ETA: Their CID department will only fix under ADP (accidental damage) despite it being obvious that it is heat damage (everyone who has seen the photo agrees), which means we will get the same POS back that is very clearly faulty and ADP can only be used one time so if we ever do ACTUALLY have an accident, we will be SOL. Needless to say, this is disappointing and infuriating and Asus will FOREVER be on our banned list. Chose a company who actually stands by their products and their warranties.

So far so good. Im writing this review after an extensive week of use. The unit itself is beautiful. Finish is great, however it is a finger print magnet. I purchased some Koala wipes to take care of that issue though. The RGB lighting is great, and has adjustable brightness levels. ROG center is nice to control the computer. I havent fully explored everything on this unit, and I am just now getting used to WIndows again, and I am coming from being a 6 year Macbook Pro and iMac user. I still have my iMac desktop, however this unit and Windows 10 is a GREAT experience. Windows 10 is smooth and this computer is fast and responsive with no lagging yet.

I was looking at the MSI Apache and Raider before purchasing this. I watched a LOT of reviews, and I just couldnt justify the price difference for me. I am not a big PC Gamer, but I do a lot of video and photo editing. This thing does EVERYTHING I have asked it too with ease. Very limited render buffering on huge files. I am impressed. The initial setup and install took 5 hours for Windows and such, which concerned me, with some of the reviews with failed hard drives. My initial purchase was without a SSD, and just a 1TB Hybrid Drive. I purchased a ADATA XPG 256GB SSD for boot, and this thing SCREAMS even more. Literally takes 6 seconds too boot.

I was very worried leaving Macbooks, but I am very pleased with my decision. I just couldnt justify an extra $1500 in a Mac on top of the purchase price for this. Its been a pleasant transition for me, and very impressed with how the Windows experience with W10 has been.

Cons:

Some of the keyboard keys were in odd positions compared to what I am used to
Fan that sounds like a 747 jet engine
Extremely slow
Crippling unexplained disk usage
Expensive for a loud, slow, more often than not non-functioning computer

This laptop performs extremely well, has a fantastic screen, and feels great.

For editing and gaming it works beautifully, rendering full 1080p videos very quickly and running Adobe Premiere and After Effects with no problems. It also runs games really well as far as I can tell, though I'm not much of a gamer.

The keyboard looks and feels great- the colors are vivid and I really enjoy typing on it.

The touchpad can be a bit fanatic, but with some adjustment in settings it works perfectly.

The added volume, microphone, and gaming center keys are actually a useful bonus that I didn't think I would need but have actually used quite a bit.

Overall this is a fantastic laptop and I really would recommend it

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Laptop, Great Price!

This computer has changed the game for me.. I used to have a MacBook Pro and it was so limiting because I couldn't play many games on it. For the price this is a great deal.. I mainly use my computer to run Ableton Live which is does without any problem, although the audio card is a PC card so there can be latency which I solved with a audio interface. As for running games it runs basically everything I play at max graphics. The GPU can be a little loud but that's expected for a thin gaming laptop. The screen is amazing, very crisp and clear.. The battery isn't the greatest but I never really use it unplugged so I don't really have to worry. I have yet to add an SSD and more RAM but having the option is great.. Overall I'm very satisfied, good price for what you get!

Great gaming laptop. It has all the features a beginning gamer would need and has hands down the best display for medium-end gaming laptops. It is very easy to carry around and never failed me on anything. The only downside is that when mine arrived the trackpad had a rattling noise whenever clicked, so I thought it was a refurbished laptop, however I called Asia support and gave them the serial number and it says it was a brand new one. It might’ve been a manufacturing defect (probably a lose screw) It doesn’t affect the performance of the laptop at all. The computer also has extra RAM and SSD slots if you want to upgrade it. You can also change the hard drive. Also it was really slow out of the box but after all the updates and drivers got installed, it was lightning fast. Overall a great gaming laptop for this price.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not going well so far edit: now a brick
Reviewed in Canada on September 6, 2019
FINAL EDIT: COMPUTER BRICKED AFTER A FEW MONTHS. Can't book from any drive. just dead.

Got the computer today and so far things are not going well. I can't search the start menu; it crashes after a character or two. Even from the control panel the search functions crash the window.

I'm gonna try a windows reset after a couple hours of unsuccessful troubleshooting.

EDIT: after a windows reset my start bar is working! Computer doesn't feel crazy fast but thats somewhat to be expected since I have the SHDD version which feels slow compared to my SSD desktop. That being said once i get an SSD bad in this bad boy i think it will be well worth the money. moving up to 3 stars maybe 4 if she keeps running well.

Double EDIT: After installing the SSD she purring like a kitten. So long story short; Hardware seems beautiful and is nicely upgradeable (added an SDD and could easily add more RAM); but had some software issues out of the gate. Buy at your own risk; but if you get for the price, could be a good deal. raising to 4 stars.

I got mine as a warehouse deal for 500$ less and it was in great condition . It was listed as “good “ with cosmetic damage but all I found was a barely detectable scratch on the screen
My first day with the laptop was annoying and I feel these issues are with Windows 10 more so than the hardware itself .
The laptop was so slow because the disk usage was at 100% . The culprit was an office related process .
I did a full reset of the pc (took hours )to get rid of the junk and ran through the updates .
As others have suggested I feel the firecuda is maybe not the best , so I will be installing an ssd soon .

The laptop runs great now . I spent about 2 hours playing battlefront 2 and had a great time .

My only real complaint . The fans are loud ! The laptop doesn’t get hot but the fans are loud enough while playing that I could hear them in another room when I had my game paused.

It took almost 24 hours for Windows to finish all the updates. I thought it was frozen a few times. After the updates, the keyboard shortcuts stopped working and installing the BIOS drivers didn't work. The quick ASUS chat support directed me to remove/reinstall the ATK driver and that fixed the problem! But then the ROG Center stopped registering the CPU/GPU temperatures. Unistalling/reinstalling fixed that. But now the ROG shortcut key stopped working! So I redid the ATK reinstall. Now the laptop is set.

It is very fast. Boots up in 17 seconds. Has taken everything I've thrown at it. Streaming to Twitch on 720p 30fps with overlays/webcam and no hiccups in the stream, editing and exporting videos with effects in Adobe Premiere. 10 minute export time for a 10 minute long video, very reasonable.

It is a fingerprint magnet where your palms would rest using the trackpad but it stopped once I got my optical mouse setup.

I'll update as I use the laptop more...
