We had our home professionally cleaned again after moving in 2+ years ago when it was last cleaned professionally, I couldn't believe how much better our carpets looked - like when we moved in but I have not been able to replicate with my Dyson since. I was considering getting the carpet cleaned professionally because the Dyson has trouble picking up the carpet pile in high traffic areas unless I use a carpet rake first and follow the same vacuum pattern every time. I thought the house cleaner did something to the carpet but she only vacuumed with the commercial Oreck vacuums she said she swears by, and that I didn't need to clean my carpet. How could a vacuum that looks like the one my mom used be better than my awesome looking Dyson that I paid like $400 for?
I hesitated but did my research and purchased the Oreck. It was pretty easy to assemble and had to endure my family laughing because they thought I'd purchased a 40 year old vacuum. But I tried it on a notoriously high traffic area that I usually have to vigorously rake to get the pile up with the Dyson. The Oreck pulled up the carpet pile without raking it first, AND while vacuuming in the opposite direction.
I got all excited and vacuumed the whole house and FINALLY it looks like the day we moved in (the last time it was professionally cleaned).
I will qualify this by saying I do have an older Dyson vacuum, maybe 10 years old or so....but we had wood floors put in not long after I bought it so it does NOT have many miles on it at all. I think the Oreck just took the Dyson to town, at half the cost and half the weight.
The Oreck is light enough to use on stairs and I was able to do a flight in no time compared to wrestling the Dyson and the stair attachment up and down the stairs. I even used the Oreck on the couches and ottoman and it removed the cat hair really well. I will keep my Dyson for the attachments and pet hair turbine (for pillows and small areas), but that is not a knock on the Oreck because the simplicity of the design compared to the Dyson I think adds to its amazing effectiveness.
Another great design feature of the Oreck is the low profile head and the handle that folds all the way to the floor. This give me access under desks, couches, and beds that the Dyson can't touch. It also transitions seamlessly between tile and carpet surfaces and is just as effective on hard floors as carpets without having to turn a knob to switch surfaces, like on most vacuums I've owned. Also, the extension cord is 40' long and plugs into a shorter cord on the vacuum and held together with a cord lock. This is a great concept that I would assume would allow you to switch to different length cords, based on your needs.
I read reviews that the commercial models don't work on high pile carpet. I don't know the definition of "high pile", but I have tile floors, low pile rugs like what you'd find in hotel carpets, and carpet that I consider pretty standard - like 1/2" thick or so. The Oreck works equally well on all three surfaces. Of course the vacuum gives more resistance on the carpet, but for what I consider normal or standard carpet pile this vacuum works great.
I'll get used to using a bag again. It's really old school along with the rest of the no frills design and function of this vacuum. But its a great trade-off for how my carpets look now, and although I don't anticipate having to replace any parts anytime soon with the extended life belt, it appears from my research that parts are easy to find and replace. Another benefit of the simple but incredibly functional design.
I've used this Oreck U2000RB1 twice since getting it, and the first thing my 14 yo son says, "hey dad where did you get that, the 1980's?" So this is not a fancy vacuum, it does look old fashioned, but no attachments, no "rolling ball", no clear canister to see your dirt. it just does the job a vacuum cleaner is supposed to do, clean.
I was replacing a Hoover Wind tunnel "bagless" canister vacuum, which after 4-5 years of light use, kept shutting off abruptly in the middle of a job (overheating since the hoses clogged all the time), it stopped working even after cleaning out the hoses, and emptying the "bagless" hoover canister full of dirt and dust and hair meant standing outside, with a bag so you didn't just reintroduce all the dust back into your house that you just finished vacuuming up! In other words, the Hoover Wind tunnel was a painful, tortuous, piece of sh it, and I'll never buy Hoover again!
I just wanted a good vacuum, with a bag, that did the job. I don't need to vacuum curtains, I don't care about the hoses, attachments, bells n whistles. After 5 years, I got tired of emptying the canister. I prefer the vacuum bags, like I used in the 80's-90's so the dirt actually stays in the bag and into the trash where it belongs.
This Oreck bagged vacuum is light as a feather! Its a joy to push, its so light, its simple, constructed well. I did some research and already knew about Oreck's reputation for reliability. I wasn't persuaded by the cheaper Oreck XL "consumer" vacuum, after reading reviews and you tube videos, I think this U2000RB1 model was the best value, because it has all the basics, but comes with an Enduralife belt, which the lower priced models did not. I don't care about the 2-speed setting in the higher priced model, in fact that causes more problems.
So far this U2000RB1 vacuum model is light to use, easy to push and pull, the handle is an ingenious (ergonomic) style. In fact, I plan to use the vacuum to clean the carpeted stairs, since it is so light! I ordered the green Oreck replacement bags, because its important not to go cheap with the bags. The key to keeping the strong suction power of this machine is to keep the air filtration through the bag, the cheaper bags do not do this.
After 2 uses, this vacuum is a dream. Its has strong suction, it actually picks up lint and dirt from the carpet, it actually goes under the bed to get hair and dirt, in other words, does what it should. this model U2000RB1 is a bit more expensive, but if you don't mind not having the fancy attachments, it is worth. I hope it will last for years, as advertised.
