Speedlite 430EX II

A powerful and versatile flash, the Speedlite 430EX II will expand your shooting options with a Guide Number of 43, wireless slave flash ability, nine custom functions and a 24-105mm zoom head.

Detailed Features

E-TTL II Flash metering

Portable and compact, the Speedlite 430EX II is high powered with a Guide Number of 43 suitable for both bounce flash and telephoto lens shooting. E-TTL II metering with compatible cameras gives accurate flash exposure in all situations, even when bouncing light from a wall or ceiling.

For more control the flash power can be set manually in 1/3rd stop increments from 1/1 to 1/64th power.

24-105mm auto zoom head

Used with a compatible EOS digital SLR, the Speedlite 430EX II automatically detects the camera’s sensor size and zooms the flash head for optimum scene coverage. This reduces wasted light and improves both battery life and recycling times.

The 24-105mm auto zoom head and a 14mm wide-panel diffuser provides flash coverage for a wide range of shooting situations.

The swivel and tilt head allow the use of bounce flash to create softer lighting when using a single flash on-camera.

Wireless Slave

The Speedlite 430EX II can be used as a wireless slave flash unit triggered by an appropriate master flash unit. The small size and high power output make it an ideal slave flash for creating a portable studio with multiple flashguns.

Power source

Powered by 4 x AA batteries the Speedlite 430EX II is lightweight, portable and compact enough to keep with you. Recycling is approximately 20% faster than the previous model and nearly silent to avoid scaring timid wildlife subjects.

Durability

A metal mounting foot and quick release latch ensure the connection between the camera and Speedlite is both easy to use and secure.

* in meters at 105mm setting, ISO 100.

** with compatible EOS cameras only.

Flash control

When used with a compatible camera all aspects of flash control, including flash power settings and all nine custom functions can be adjusted from the camera menu**.

AF Assist

Covering 1-9 AF points, the Speedlite 430EX II can emit an infra-red focusing beam providing contrast for the lens to focus on when shooting in low light conditions.

Really great flash
5 Stars
Really great flash
I put the 430exII on my Canon EOS T1i. Pretty exciting combination. I had been using a Canon A2E with a $400 Metz flash, but the flash wouldn't transfer over to my new camera, so I bought this, as the 580 was just a little higher in price than I could go. I received the flash from 6ave photo well packaged and quickly. Read the manual in about 15 minutes and then hit the streets early the following morning. Had the camera set on on "P" with center weighted metering. This turned out well for all except close ups of flowers outside where the flash tended to wash out some of the lighter colors. But this was my fault, not the flash's. Had I gone completely automatic, I'm sure the fill flash would have been much more accurate. I was walking around in 90 degree heat and trying to beat some building rain storms, so I wasn't concentrating nearly as much as I should have. Shot some interior shots of the lobby at Riverside Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. They reached completely across the lobby which was over 45 feet deep. Closer shots inside were evenly lit with very little, if no fall off at the edges. Since these were just grab shots, there was no problem if I made mistakes. Which I did. I should have changed over to my Canon 50mm 1.8 lens and probably would have eliminated some of the graininess. Some have said the buttons are too recessed. I can tell you from my experience, that if the buttons stick out, they inadvertently get pushed by your chest or camera strap or something. And if you don't catch that the button has been accidentally pushed, you can wind up with a trashed shot. But that's just me. Maybe others are far more careful than I am. The weight of the flash is good. I'll probably use it with my 50mm more, but with the 35-70mm it's fine. And on the subject of weight. I like weight. I'll put up with lugging a heavier camera and flash unit around for one reason. Steadiness. So many photos submitted to webs sites have one very important thing wrong with them. They are out of focus. Some by a little and others by quite a bit. A heavier camera helps you hold the camera steady. And you can't always rely on a faster shutter speed or ISO to compensate for camera shake and a tripod/uni-pod is not always an option. Accept the little extra weight and take better pictures. The flash is very flexible. I would say that I could shoot a party in a hall or auditorium with great confidence. You won't regret buying this flash. If you do studio work you should probably go with the 580. But I don't do any studio work. All outside or on boat interiors and this flash is wonderful so far.
