A Restored Man: The Men of Halfway House, Book 3 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 1,630 ratings

Cole Renzo thinks his greatest challenge is to behave for the remainder of his term at Halfway House. Until he meets his new boss, Ty Calloway, a man who ticks off every box on Cole's list of interests.

A sought-after restorer and customizer of exotic and collectible cars, Ty had enough confidence to command what he wanted in life, until one fateful night changed everything. Almost two years later, he's slowly rebuilding his life with great control. He's defied the odds and works tirelessly to be the man he once was - but he still feels broken.

Cole's candor and unfiltered personality awaken Ty's barely-remembered desire to greet each new day with a smile, while Ty's unwavering acceptance of Cole's quirks and brash humor makes Cole feel as if he fits in for the first time in far too long. When a nemesis threatens Ty's personal restoration and the things he holds dear, Cole is determined to protect their relationship, even if that means sacrificing everything he's worked so hard to achieve.

But Ty will have to let his guard down, surrender control, and admit he needs Cole first, even if that puts him at risk of breaking beyond repair.

This is book three in The Men of Halfway House series. Although part of a series, this book can be heard as a standalone.

Let me add to the avalanche of praise being heaped upon this book. I was so excited to see that the next installment in this series had just become available - an excitement that, most fortunately, was well-rewarded, indeed. There are few other authors who manage to depict the relationships between men as accurately, poignantly and beautifully as Ms. Reese.

This is the third in the Halfway House series. Halfway House is an old Victorian restored and run by two gay men. Convicts whose sentences are almost up come to Halfway House to smooth their transition from prison back into the real world.

The "guests" of Halfway House are all empathetic, complex, well-drawn characters seeking something more than a transition - a new life built on redemption, respect, honor and the possibility of love. These are men who have made big mistakes, so there are major obstacles ahead of them, including both temptation and bad guys galore. There's a host of equally robust secondary characters, including the owners of Halfway House, the families of the "guests", the police and parole officers who work with the offenders and the other men they meet along the way. The remarkable Ms. Reese explores all of this with believability and authenticity, and without melodrama or hoary old Gay Romance memes. That's because she's a talented and confident writer who gets to the very heart of her characters and moves the reader along without artifice, manipulation or purple prose. "A Restored Man" is a long book, but the pace is breathtaking and the pages seem to fly by.

The two main characters are Cole, a funny and energetic young man completely devoid of any filters. Hence, he is as honest as he is annoying. He's just finishing up his sentence for car theft. As part of the Halfway House work requirement, he goes to work for Ty Calloway, the owner and manager of a huge automotive shop that features repair, customization, restoration and a highly respected automotive design studio. Talk about foxes and hen houses - though the assignment does make some sense, offering Cole the opportunity to channel his passion and expertise for automobiles in a potentially legal, productive and rewarding direction. It could also be the start of a great career.

This fortuitous assignment brings together two young men whose lives have been terribly damaged by the loss of people they love, and the guilt they both feel for the events that took those lives. Cole is part of a huge Italian/Cuban family with brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, a veritable neighborhood of people who still love the irrepressible guy who can't keep his mouth shut, but has an uncanny gift of making everyone around him smile. Ty has only his brother, Aidan, the hard-nosed cop who seemed to detest Cole on sight. He also has the loyal technicians, painters and metal-smiths who populate his automotive business, the one he inherited after his father's tragic death. It's surprising that two men surrounded by so many people could feel so alone and unloved, but that's what guilt often does - isolates you from those who care about you the most. This passionate story is about how these two terribly mismatched people provide each other with exactly what they need to find the light and life, again. Which. of course they do. After all, the single most important message of Halfway House is hope.

Ms. Reese paints vivid settings with an economy of words; dialogue, with charming banter; and the sex scenes are hot, though tasteful and used, without exception, to reveal the growth of the relationship between the men. This is Gay Romance writing at its best. Nothing terribly earth-shattering, nothing all that unique, just a few hundred pages of a couple of fascinating characters growing and loving - what more can you ask?

My only complaint about this book is that Ms. Reese is just not getting the editing she deserves. This novel is much cleaner than a host of other gay-themed novels I've read recently, but was not without its flaws, including the apparent obligatory misuse of apostrophes in plurals, a few grammatical errors and the use of entirely wrong words (a workbench is described as a "bench table" several times) and the molds used to form fiberglass car parts called "moldings", as though they were the trim around doors, floors and ceilings. There were not enough errors to be distracting, but since the writing, plot and characters were so close to perfect, it seems a shame that the editing wasn't.

In any case, I can honestly recommend "A Restored Man", without reservation, and with all my heart. It's a beautiful book about beautiful, strong men. If you're in the mood for a good read, some serious character development and a few hours with two men deeply in love, don't miss "A Restored Man".

Wow, this author is an amazing writer !! Each story in this series gets better and is more engaging. Loved the opening scene when he was dancing while cooking, I laughed out loud !!! Halfway House bosses Julian and Matt are priceless. Cole is the guy who went to jail for car theft. He's a gear-head all the way. Ty runs a high end vehicle shop and says yes to let Cole work for him. I love to see the other men of the Halfway House again, and continue the sincere, caring, accepting, and open relationships found there. Cole is genuine, unguarded, unmeasured, and uninhibited, and a generally happy man. Ty is still recovering from an accident, 6 month coma, burns, surgeries, and mental anguish of the ordeal. His brother Aiden is protective, but can't seem to help him. Their parents died in the crash. In comes Cole, who turns Ty into a laughing, real life nearly happy fellow. Aiden is thrilled with the positive changes. Through their slow moving "courtship" the guys get to know each other, help each other, and become important as breathing air to each other. Deep characters we like right away, an interesting, different story, and hot M/M sex, all make this tale worthwhile. In each book of this series we have wonderful characters that are complicated and they find the compassion they needed. This full length stand alone novel is full-bodied and hard to put down. It's funny, endearing, passionate and loving.
I loved it. Highly recommend. ENJOY !!!

Wow! Well let me start by saying this is the first book I've read by this author's and it was awesome! I absolutely adored Cole and his honesty, he was smart, unique quirky, sexy, and strong. He and (My) Ty are truly great together. The supporting characters are truly supporting and all interesting on there own even the prick was 2 dimensional. MyTy is bruised, damaged but strong and loving - He and Cole really work together. They are both artists in their own way. Read it you'll enjoy where the author takes you. The only criticism I have is I like the sexy to be more on the page. This book was sexy but a lot of the details where left off page.

This series (different couple each time, so could be read alone-- but has some recurring characters, so why not go in order?) is shaping up to be one of the better ones around.

The writing is strong, the characters are complex and unique and have their own voices, the stories vary, but are all compelling. This time we have Cole, a guy with no filter, whose mouth moves faster than his brain. He's just come out of doing two years for stealing a car. He's a smart-mouthed, kind of punky, confident young guy... Comes from a big loving family, but has always felt like the failure who isn't fitting in with his smart, industrious siblings.

He's been warned to try to pause before speaking, and he's intent on not disappointing his mother any more than he has... so he's on his best behavior when he's offered a job. It's to do with car repair, restoration and customization--and he LOVES cars, more than anything.

Ty is the owner. He's two years away from an accident that nearly killed him and has left him a shadow of his former self. But there's something about the new, young guy and his enthusiasm, and his brashness, and his unfiltered mouth that immediately gets Ty's attention.

This is definitely recommended. Read the first two books! This one is slightly more light-hearted that the others, but all are worth reading. It's all about second chances, finding love and happiness, and there's everything good about that!

Now it is Cole's turn, and I must admit I had been a bit „cautious“. For one I am not too much into cars and before Cole was mainly the person bringing comical relief to balance the chaos surrounding Cam&Hunter, so I did not expect much of him (sorry to be such a quick judge, Cole). But he and Ms Reese surprised me again and I had been sucked into this new story without even realizing it.

The beanie wearing young man with his mouth running faster than his brain gets a job at the Calloway's Garage thanks to detective Aidan, his younger brother Ty being his new boss. Like the fox in the henhouse one wonders if it is wise to let a car stealing wizard work with expensive cars. But Cole's unconcealed fascination with fast cars, his stunning repair skills and hard working hours win him the respect of the whole exotic car restoration team, his boss included.
After a horrible car accident, where the brothers lost their parents, Ty feels broken and the survivor 's guilt is eating away at him in addition to all his injuries and burns. Cole may have an unstoppable mouth, but he is also unbreakable honest and stubbornly persistant when it comes to Ty. He is like a fresh breeze and reaches Ty's grief stricken, lonely heart.
In this book the emphases is less on action and focuses more on emotions and the blooming relationship between those two sweet, likeable characters. The last third of the story the speed picks up and a new villain steps on the stage trying to blackmail Ty and Cole. Well,I am sure the story could have done without that last section, but I realize the author used it introducing another character (Drayton), which managed to make me curious about him already.

I recommend you should read the books of this series in order to get into the world of Halfway House and all its old and new MCs. That way you have no problem following all those little remarks along the sidelines from the other guys entering scenes and have the full enjoyment of this amazing world Jamie Reese has been creating with her words since the very start. Now I am feeling really antsy about volume 4!

I read the second one of this series - you CAN read them alone. I found a new world, very realistic inside view of the world of cars- and found again an excellent and dynamic story, with sexy and tearing moments. I had a great time reading it and will read it again.

A Restored Man has pathos, humour and a depth of emotion that is truly captivating as Ty and Cole struggle to come to terms with their past and to work through considerable obstacles to create a future together.

The story brilliantly weaves around Cole staying at Halfway House during his probation and working for Ty a garage owner who shares Cole's love of cars.

Both men have been emotionally shattered, but their shared passion for beautifully crafted cars creates a spark of connection that proves irresistible.

The interaction with workmates, friends and family ranges from easy banter to hugely difficult conversation. At the centre are two deeply engaging and flawed main characters. There is welcome reappearances by characters from previous Men of Halfway House books, not least Aidan, Ty's brother and only remaining family.

I felt I had found an almost perfect book that was difficult to put down, great characters, huge depth, and an interesting plot that had me gripped. I even found that Cole and Ty's passion for cars drew me in (although I wouldn't rush to read books on fast cars) and really piqued my interest). The action reaches crescendo at the end of the story. I really enjoyed the action but most particularly loved the everyday human connections, and the contrasts between Ty's small guarded family and Cole's large and rambunctious one.

Highly recommend, perfection on a page for me....and the love scenes are hot :)
