Perfect gift for a photography enthusiast or perfect indulgence if photography is your passion.
Yes, this is a beautiful TV... sports and golf show in stunning detail and vivid color... but that's not why I bought it. So in the event that you have an interest in photography, in this review I'm sharing my experience with this OLED TV as a display for photographs.
I purchased this unit as a display for all of the high quality DSLR pictures I've taken with my Nikon cameras. My wife has placed this in our living room in section where we display art - entirely separate from a TV viewing area.
The visual result of displaying high quality photographs is absolutely stunning. A 55" diagonal display has the equivalent of more than eight 5"x7" picture frames... so when composing a photo for display, you can have a subject displayed in full context... you literally don't need heavy cropping to emphasize the subject... you can just walk closer to the 55" image!
Blacks are perfectly black, color is stunning, the display is bright enough, and from what I can research, the pixels have about 10 bits of dynamic range. My only strong advice is that if you use this display to show high quality photos, you should disable "power saving modes" and keep the display set to a manual level of brightness you enjoy. If you allow it to automatically adapt to room conditions, it's hard to get the white balance right when you are preparing your photos for display and also blacks tend to overwhelm the image.
If you have spent "far too much money" on cameras and lenses to enjoy your photographic hobby then you owe yourself this indulgence. Get this display, get an inexpensive video server that will run Adobe LightRoom and copy a selected set of the best image from your photo collection to that server and be prepared for a total renewal of your passion for photography.
Details:
My choices/setup: LG 55" OLED. Video Server MacMini with 1 TB drive. Adobe LightRoom for Library and Slideshow - 20 seconds, random. Nikon P600, D3100, D800, D850 source images. I use Adobe LightRoom 8bit TIFF to store the images which seems to be the best compromise between photographic size, quality, and flexibility for photographic editing. I find that after I display an image, I see areas I can improve, so TIFF is a nice choice since it doesn't degrade with multiple editing.
Canon DSLRs are wonderful, but I happen to prefer Nikon, so my wife uses a Nikon P600 and I use a Nikon D3100, D800, and D850. Any image over 8 M pixels has the potential to be stunning on this display. Pixel pitch is 0.315mm or about 80 lines per inch, so even closeup (12") inspection of my usual subjects don't seem pixelated. Maybe text fonts or vector computer graphic images might show some pixelation at 12" but typical portraits, landscapes, animals, flowers, buildings, and street photography look great - even close up.
My "unscientific" experience with this display is that editing in Photoshop or with Nik filters to bring out a particular artistic feel seems to be much easier with 16M pixel or better images. Editing D800 and D850 NEFs (camera raw) for this display seems close to "effortless" if the ISO is under 800 and you have plenty of dynamic range. For my 14 M pixel D3100, I get beautiful photos but it seems to require a lot more work... I can't easily run the entire image through a software filter. I need to carefully choose regions in Photoshop and make careful adjustments with appropriate feathering. It's worth it to rescue a shot... but every time I hit a D800 NEF in my collection I am so happy... I wish I had learned the NEF lesson earlier because at least 30% of my landscape shots were 36M pixel JPEGs and once the JPEG image is touched with any kind of artistic filtering they have a terrible propensity to introduce banding artifacts in the sky - especially in extremes of low or high lighting. This kind of banding takes a lot of work in Photoshop, but it can still be repaired and you can rescue the shot.
I highly recommend this display as a dedicated "Picture Frame" for your photographs. You will not regret it...
Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2020
Addressing some of the concerns I had going in, I have yet to see any issues with burn-in or brightness. I spent the weekend playing multiple hours of God of War, Detroit, Far Cry 5, and Ratchet and Clank and I saw absolutely nothing that leads me to worry about burn in. I also watched a substantial amount of Planet Earth II and Black Panther on 4k HDR blu ray disks. I found the colors staggeringly beautiful and at no point did I feel I couldn't achieve the brightness I needed. This was true even in game mode where HDR is playing a large factor.
I will say that I am not a fan of the TruMotion feature and I have removed it from all of my picture settings. I haven't found a need to make too many changes to picture calibration out of the box, and the few changes I made were quick and easy. I'd also like to add that the remote control is one of the best "stock" remotes I have ever used. It quickly sand easily connected to my sound bar and my blu ray player, leaving me able to control almost all of my devices from one remote (PS4 Pro excluded).
All-in-all, this is an amazing tv and if you can get it at the right price there is no reason not to pull the trigger.
Finally, shout out to Beach Camera for selling this sub $1200. It was a great deal at that price point and the packaging could not have been more protective. Really well done by that company.
