Unfolding Destinies: The Ongoing Story of the Auca Mission Paperback – January 1, 1998

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

Olive Fleming Liefeld, widow of the missionary Peter Fleming, relates her version of the events already familiar to readers of Elisabeth Elliot's Through the Gates of Splendor. Olive describes details of the fateful trip in 1956 during which Pete, Jim Elliot, and three others were killed by Waorani Indians in Ecuador.

In 1989, Olive returned to Ecuador and met the Indians who were responsible for her husband's death. There she discovered previously unknown pieces of the puzzle and gained new insight into the events themselves. She came away with a deeper understanding of the ways God works in the lives and destinies of His people.

and adds another perspective to the story of the missionaries and their mission. I'm so glad Mrs. Liefeld wrote it. The timing of the writing seemed to be God's timing. There are details about her courtship with Pete. Excerpts from his letters and journals were inspiring spiritually. I do pray that she's been able to forgive the Elliots for some of the issues that were understandably so deeply painful. It was evident that there was still pain in the remembering. That was helpful to know for anyone who's been through a similar relationship that those feelings won't necessarily disappear. I appreciated how honest she was, feeling that I got the true story and not a "front." Wanted to be reassured that she is at peace today and that in her honesty she could at the same time be charitable towards Jim in looking back at the times and ages of the people involved. This is not a missionary book that will make you feel like a loser of a Christian, but it will make you feel normal in your humanity which is blended with the desire to serve and know God. The title is very fitting and lovely as the book's theme is knowing the will of God. That thought is resolved simply and clearly in the conclusion. What a precious person.

Well written & interesting. I have read several books about the five missionaries who died in Ecuador. This one is a very good companion to the others. I enjoyed it very much.

I loved the book. Had previously read Through Gates of Splendor and Mrs. Liefelds telling of what happened was an exciting read.

An enlightening and fascinating account by an American missionary who was thrust into an ordeal, that no one should have to experience. Mrs. Liefeld's honesty was especially refreshing, and made me appreciate her sacrifice all the more. I have read the more well-known accounts of the terrible massacre, which took the life of Olive's husband; so it was very interesting to get another viewpoint of the tragedy. I also really enjoyed the insight into Pete Fleming's personality. He was always overshadowed by the stronger personas of Jim Elliot and Nate Saint, so it was good to learn more about him as an individual. Anyone who is interested in the events of the Auca massacre, will definitely want to read this account.

This book gave another viewpoint of the what happened to the five missionaries that died and the personal background of Pete Fleming. Mr. Fleming seemed to have little reported about him, with Jim Elliot and Nate Saint being highly publicized in a rather lofty manner. This book is real life in all its true emotions and relevant to adults of all ages. However, this is another book, Unfolding Destinies: The Ongoing Story the Auca Mission, that was published 8 years after this book. I thought it was "the rest of the ongoing story" as the title suggested. It is this same exact book with about 30 extra pages of updates at the end. Just buy that book. I bought both and didn't need to. However, upon inspection, the book I had has the author's signature. :-)

I am quite familiar with the story of the 5 missionary martyrs and after reading the newest biography on Elisabeth Elliot was interested in learning more about the other 4 couples involved. This fit the bill. Precious little information is available about the other 4 men and their families, except for Steve Saint’s telling of his father’s story. I was happy to find this little piece about the Flemings.

Olive Fleming Liefeld tells the story of her and Pete’s early life, courtship and marriage, their missionary experience, Pete’s death, and then (briefly) her life after, including returning to Ecuador with her 2nd husband and daughter many years later. It was further insight into the whole story and people involved, one that did not focus primarily on the Elliots, as most accounts do since Elisabeth Elliot was the initial writer to tell the story to the world through her biography of Jim and well-known accounts of the effort to reach the Waorani and ensuing murders.

This is no literary masterpiece and is not grippingly written. Olive is not a brilliant writer as Elisabeth was, but she does a fine job telling her story. I gave the book 4 stars because it does the job of communicating the information.

Engaging book by Olive Fleming Liefeld about her first husband, Pete Fleming. Couldn't put it down. The book centers on Pete Fleming's life, but the reader gets a closer look into the lives of the other four men (Jim Elliot, Rodger Youderian, Ed McCully, and Nate Saint). All died on Palm Beach in January 1956, while attempting to take the Gospel to the Aucas. The author also tells of her return trip to Ecuador and her meeting with the Waoranis (new name),who killed the men, and who already had become born again Christians, and lastly understanding more what happened on the day her husband died. For further reading, see Elisabeth Elliot's book, "The Savage My Kinsmen."

I started reading yesterday and finished this afternoon. The story of the five martyred missionaries has always held a certain fascination for me. God uses humans with all their weaknesses and shortcomings to tell the story of His love and faithfulness. This book tells the love story of Olive and Peter Fleming for each other and for God. I've read several other books about the missionaries and watched the movies and it all comes back to what God can do when we stop going through the motions with Him. The story is told using Peters diary, Olives memories and details from close friends. There wasn't a boring page in this book and the material was as fresh as if it were lived and written yesterday.
