I've completed the main campaign, which delivered a vastly better and more exciting storyline than the original game. Now, I actually very much enjoyed the story elements in the original, however they could be very oblique to uncover. Many times, crucial pieces of information and lore were found not in the campaign but in Grimoire entries (accessed out-of-game, infamously), descriptions of certain weapons, side conversations between NPCs, etc. I actually appreciated this method of unfolding information, as it made the whole game world feel more real, where information could be happened across as opposed to having it all fed to you artificially in the main storyline. What fans wanted, though, and, what was previously lacking, was a great big, expansive main story IN ADDITION to lots of lore and world-building in-world. And that is what the Destiny 2 campaign delivers in spades. It was a truly rewarding and engrossing experience lasting a good 15 hours or so. It could hardly be improved upon.
With the completion of the campaign, many, many more activities and locations open up, making this sequel feel truly massive. Even the social spaces are bigger than they were before, and offer a lot more in the way of small secrets and finishing touches to explore. I've played a total time of around 18 hours, and I feel like I've barely brushed the surface of SOME of the activities, while others I haven't even touched yet. While Destiny 1 was a game you were forced to sink hundreds of hours into in order to reach the absolute pinnacle of power, Destiny 2 feels like something you choose to put that many hours into, with such a variety of activities that it seems to me like I won't be grinding through the same thing over and over. And this is just the base game, before any updates or expansions!
A word on competitive play. I spent a lot of those hours I sank into the first game in multiplayer, where Bungie once again hit such a high note on gameplay that it kept me coming back. Destiny 2 feels significantly different, with a lot of mechanics functioning a lot differently (heavy ammo, now called power ammo, being one of these. Much different, and for the better). There are a few things that are taking a little time to become accustomed to, like the change in weapon categories, but they open up a lot of new possibilities.
Destiny isn't a perfect game, because it does so many things that it can't possibly be completely cohesive. But, compared to similar games (like Overwatch and The Division) this game does so much more and has such interesting and engrossing lore that I can easily forgive any rough edges.
Technical aspects of the games have also significantly improved overall, with maps detailing the location of NPC's, public event locations (with timers to indicate when they start), and the ability to fast travel to different parts of the world map.
Multiplayer has also improved with more balanced gameplay and options for both casual and hardcore players, (personally I think the reduction of teams to just 4 v 4 has been a net gain for the MP).
Cons: Shaders are single use, and it can be frustrating trying to find the ones you prefer. Sparrows are locked until reaching level 20, and the Campaign, while I loved it overall, suffered from the fact that your guardian does not speak at all, even in parts where he/she would CLEARLY be saying something instead Ghost. Also, you can only choose to replay three random missions that are chosen (I think) on a weekly basis). This is a huge step backward since the campaign has so many enjoyable moments. A similar problem occurs with the new adventures since they are also randomized once you finish your first playthrough. Lastly, while the addition of adventures, lost zones, etc. have DEFINITELY increased the amount of content for the game, I still feel that it needs an extra something to keep it from going stale too soon, but that may just be me.
All things considered, I am very happy with the game ( If I could I would give a 4.5 rating all things considered). I am mostly a lore fan of the franchise so take my review with a grain of salt. As far as I'm concerned, I am very proud of Bungie for fixing (most) of the problems I had with the first one, especially in regards to the story and the lack of character development. Destiny 2 has me very excited (and scared) for their future, and I can't wait to see how the story continues to unfold.
The campaign is so much fun, and hey there's an actual story this time! The guns and armor designs are all unique, and while there are a lot of aspects from Destiny 1 that I miss (6 v 6 pvp, more crucible modes, my old exotics, etc) there are so many fun new aspects that I love! Fun new supers, new dances and, the minor thing I'm happiest about, the girl characters can sit like actual people now!! no more uncomfortable "paint me like one of your French girls" poses, now we can sit without pulling every muscle in our bodies!!! The new shaders are weird and I have yet to use any, but I like that they can be used for all weapons, armor, and ships and sparrows!
There are so many cool places to go and explore! Io, Titan, Nessus, the EDZ, all fun places and so beautiful. and while I really miss finding dead ghosts, and the lack of loot in loot chests has me doing more public events than loot hunting, the hidden zones in every area makes a fun new addition and almost fully makes up for the cut features.
My main problem with this game is a temporary one, and it's the lack of content. I know that soon there will be sooo much fun stuff to do, but right now I've only been able to play the same two strikes over and over, and there's only so many crucible games of crest that I can take without going crazy.
But all in all this is such a fun game, it's so good and definitely what most new games need to aspire to. Can't wait for the DLC!
