Another great product from Anker!

Another great product from Anker!
I got this product to use with my Nexus 6P. I currently have an array of additional chargers (mostly Anker) but most of them are micro USB, of those some of them have hard wired cables, and others would work with an new USB-A to USB-C cable. I wanted to essentially convert my chargers to USB-C as easily as possible.Pros:• Cheap (Cost not feel)• Quality construction• Built to spec, some of these devices can harm your device, but this passes the test (CheckR).• Micro-USB end has a perfect fit, you can hear and feel a click when plugging in and it is solid.Cons:• USB-C end jiggles a bit.• The additional rigid length it adds makes it easier to accidently damage your charging port.• Doesn’t take advantage of higher amp chargers (power IQ, tablet chargers). So like I mentioned, these adapters are cheap to buy, 2 to a pack, and only $9, as well as the quality is stellar, they are built to USB-C spec and will not harm your devices, and the Micro-USB end makes a really solid connection, though the USB-C end jiggles a bit. The added rigid length that it adds worries me that the weight exerted on the charging port, especially using a heavier cable, can cause the port to wear out fast, since it the fulcrum is stationary, but the length increased. It also make using the phone while charging a bit more annoying. Now to the part I cared the most about, with this adapter, you I found various charging speeds, typically max at ~1.2 amps, though the charger supports more. Using my tablet charger, which charges any typical Micro-USB device between 2.1-3 amps, it only charged the 6P with the adapter at 1 Amp. Using an Anker PowerIQ charger which gives out 2.1 Amps to a micro-USB device when it is the only thing plugged in only, charged at 1.2 Amps. It really got funky with older Anker chargers which have separate “Android” and “iPhone/Apple” ports. There I found that it charges at a max of 1.2 on the “Android” and a max of 750 mAh on the “Apple” port, but sometime it would require being unplugged and plugged back in to the “Android” port to get the max.All in all I say buy it. It converts all your chargers quickly and cheaply, for the amount of chargers I have, I’ll need an extra 2, and will be able to leave an adapter on permanently. Due to the minor cons, and the fact that you lose the ability to take advantage of faster chargers, I’m deducting 1 star.I received the product for free in exchange for my thorough and honest review.EDIT: I ended up buying more to convert all my cables and chargers. It's been working out great for these past 4 months, but the adapter and the length/rigidity it adds just bothers me. Not going to deduct stars as it's not a bad product. Just personally annoying for chargers that I use on a daily basis, or when I'm charging and using the phone.

Benson here again, continuing my reviews of USB Type-C legacy cables, adapters, and accessories. Today I am reviewing "Anker USB-C to Micro USB Adapter" by Anker. This comes in a convenient 2-pack.

Let's check spec compliance :
I'm using my trusty Chromebook Pixel 2015 with the Chromium Twinkie USB-PD Sniffer, available on Amazon from Plugable :
Plugable USB 3.1 Type-C (USB-C) Power Delivery Sniffer

For my first test, I've got the Anker MicroUSB Adapter plugged into a good quality (itself capable of >2.4A) Micro-B cable from Belkin. (this one:
Belkin 6-Foot 2.0 USB Type C (USB-C) to Micro USB Charge Cable, USB-C Certified ) . That is then plugged Apple proprietary MacBook charger capable of 5.2V at 2.4A.

The Type-C end is plugged into Twinkie, acting as a pass through to Chromebook Pixel 2015. Picture attached!

First let's run the ectool command from Pixel's command line to check what Pixel thinks is happening on its USB-C ports :
localhost ~ # ectool --dev 1 usbpdpower
Port 0: SNK Charger Proprietary 4744mV / 2400mA, max 5000mV / 2400mA / 12000mW
Port 1: SRC

So far so good. Pixel identifies the charger as a Proprietary type adapter, and has negotiated 2.4A.

Let's see what Twinkie (the USB PD sniffer) says :
> tw cc
CC1 = 22 mV ; CC2 = 434 mV

The tw cc command reads the current voltage values from the CC pins. As you can see here, CC2 pin has a value of 434mV. Referring to the USB Type-C Specification Table 4-25 Voltage on Sink CC pins, this voltage falls right in the middle of the range allowed for vRd-USB, meaning that yes, this MicroUSB adapter has the correct 56kΩ pullup resistor!

One more command :
> tw vbus
VBUS = 4818 mV ; -2450 mA

The tw vbus command uses twinkie's current and voltage meter ability. As you can see, the laptop is pulling just around 2.4A of current at 4.818V from the Apple adapter.

For a HighSpeed USB 2.0 data test, I’ve hooked my Nexus 5X to my Chromebook Pixel via the Anker MicroUSB adapter + Belkin MicroUSB cable to test large file transfer via MTP. It just works, no problem!

Now for more subjective judgments of this adapter : The Anker adapter has a black glossy overmold with the Anker logo on it. The whole thing is very small, barely larger than the Type-C or Micro-B connectors on both ends. The Type-C plug on this adapter is a very unique for a Micro-B adapter because in typical Anker fashion, it uses a very good quality plug made with a deep-draw extrusion process. The plug is a single continuous piece of metal all the way around, meaning it's stronger than other stamped type plugs. This type of plug is the same kind that is used on all of Google and Apple's Type-C plugs, and the quality shows here.

In conclusion : A high quality charging and data sync MicroUSB Adapter from Anker! The adapter is a great safe way to breathe new life into your old A-to-MicroUSB cables for use with newer USB Type-C devices such as Nexus 6P/5X or Pixel devices. It is also future proof for fast charging USB Type-C devices to come!

Updated review:
I have now spent some time with these adapters. They work really well. I keep them primarily in my cars where I share cables with the rest of my family. They have proven invaluable.

I earlier reported problems with the adapter holding on to the cable. This is where your mileage may vary. Depending upon your cable and device you may find differences in how tight they hold. Even on the loosest fitting cable, they are still snug enough that they won't fall off easily.

I am considering getting more to place in other common spaces.

Original review:
For starters, they work. I keep one in the car and another laying around the house. You plug one end into your device and your Micro USB plug into the other end.

They are small. This is both a plus and a minus. The plus is that they aren't very obtrusive when attached to your device. The minus is that they can be easily lost. So far, I haven't lost mine yet....keeping my fingers crossed.

I have a Nexus 6P. I found that they are very stiff/tight to insert into my phone. The micro USB end is much looser. As a result, when you go to unplug, the cable comes off then you have to pull the adapter out. I would have preferred it to hold tighter to the cable and be able to safely leave it there. This was enough of an annoyance to me that I bought a USB to USB-C cable for my primary charging station (I have the one that came with it installed elsewhere).

I recently bought a Nexus 6P phone and knew that I would have to purchase new cables and possibly new chargers. What I didn't know was there was an issue with many chargers and cables being sold as USB-C compliant. The issues ranged from poor data propagation to improper power connections, some causing electrical damage. Being very weary, I did some research and found that a Google engineer by the name of Benson Leung had been certifying different cables and adapters. These were listed as "Approved". I can tell you all that I have bought two sets of these adapters and LOVE them!

The adapters are made of plastic, but feel very sturdy. When you plug them into the charging port of the phone, it is a very solid connection. The only thing I am conscious of when plugged in is to make sure I'm careful of the combined length of the cable micro-USB connector + the adapter. They are also inexpensive enough that I am able to purchase a couple packs in order to continue to use my existing chargers...even those with built-in micro USB connectors. The only downside is they don't charge as fast as a straight USB-C to USB-C cable/charger combinations. That isn't a fault of the adapter.

These adapters have brought new life into my legacy micro-USB cables and will help out in a pinch. They are made by a solid company that I have come to respect for their quality of craftsmanship. I hope this review gives you some additional insight into these little gems and hope you find these adapters as reliable as I have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Small, fits, and works...and great service!
Reviewed in Canada on January 25, 2018
Update: 4 years later
One of the adapters stopped working, with a "bulge" pushing through the plastic (see pics). Failed with a flaky connection. In fairness to Anker, they swapped out a failed adapter early on and 4 years is a good run...outasting an oem LG cable, and many no name cables and accessories. One still going strong, and still happy with purchase.

Revised my review to 5 stars.
Had a small issue with the adapters. They proactively reached out and took care of the problem. As I sit here thinking about the sea of electronics and cables that are not Anker brand, some working so-so, some long since in the garbage. I realize that when a company stands by what it sells, no matter how small, it is worth paying a bit extra for (and even then, it wasn't much more). No more no name stuff from eBay for me! Protect your investment and buy something that works. Good job Anker!
-------

Bought this to allow me to use a micro-usb cable that I keep at work and another in the car. They work, and they are solid. The quality is immediately apparent. The adapters are small, no wider than the micro-usb connector they are attached to. I plug these into a phone using a Poetic full coverage case that has only a small opening, and it fit no problem. Length is short too.

The adapter fits *very* snuggly on the cable and on the phone (a little less snug on the phone). This is a good thing as it won't come off the cable easily. Because it is smooth though, I tend to pull the cable connector end to remove it from the device. Sometimes this causes it to separate, and occasionally the adapter has flown off, which can be annoying as it is quite small. If there was some way to loosely tie it to the cable so at least it wouldn't fly off it would be nice. Or maybe a grippy texture would help.

That said, the devices work, and though they cost a bit more than competitors it is easy to see the build quality here. You could pay less, but it is what stands between your $5 cable and your $500 phone. Worth the price.
