I did not get this for what it was designed for (low noise), but I can tell you that it is very quiet. What I did get it for is its power capacity and efficiency. It handles everything I throw at it with ease.
The only thing I did not quite appreciate is the cable; They are stiff!! That means they can be a bit of a hassle to handle/bend into place - that's where the supplied cable ties comes in handy I guess.
I must say for a gold rated power supply this one is so close to a platinum it makes me smile. I guess to the letter it is shy of the platinum rating but that is much better than being just barely able to rate gold so that is a big plus for this PSU. The modular cables are flat and black from tip to tip. I replaced a failing TX750 (80 Plus) in my rig and can immediately appreciate not having to hide unused cables and not having to see rainbow colored wires at my connectors. For me this PSU is total overkill, I will post my rig specs at the bottom. I do have my eye on another 770 and will be getting 3 more 4TB reds but even so I might be up to about 700w peak usage (if stress testing my cpu and gpus together). My goal is to have headroom and stay + or - 20% of the most power efficient 50% mark. This will keep noise low and not add much stress to this component. As for now noise levels are nil, the zero rpm fan mode keeps it from even spinning as I have not ever reached 40% or higher long enough to heat up the unit. I have experience no coil whine at my current usage.
Cons:
That all said, what is the difference between this and a HX1000i that warrants a price difference? Both are 1000w and both are within about 1% difference in efficiency. I learned that there is a measurable difference in electrical ripple. The RM1000 @ 100% reads about 45mV of voltage fluctuation to the HX1000i @ 100% reads under 25mV. RM @ 50% = 25mV to HX @ 50% = 13mV. For reference an AX1500i with it's DSP (digital power management) @ 100% has under 10mV of voltage ripple. These are millivolts or 0.001 volts so although there is a noticeable difference it is relatively small. Larger voltage ripple can cause electrical components to reach failure sooner or run at less than optimal, but I feel even the highest 45mV (0.045 V) of this RM1000 is not going to damage a computer or destabilize an everyday overclock as we don't use/need anything that sensitive.
Conclusion:
For the mainstream overclocker like me, I would call this the sweet spot for price to performance. For the hardcore OCer running exotic cooling or extreme tweakers you can be assured if you have a HXi or AXi series you paid more for something more than marketing and blue or red stickers, respectively. Any world record chasers and LN2 users reading this are looking at the wrong PSU. I fully recommend this RM series to anyone running stock coolers up to AIO liquid cooling users. Above that this is a strong contender but there are better.
Disclaimer:
I named only corsair products thus far to keep things fair in comparisons but I am not a fanboy and you can get PSU's from Coolermaster, SeaSonic, Silverstone, and others with lower voltage ripple than this RM1000.

It can occasionally get a bit warm before the fan turns on, but not hot enough to raise concern
It just overheated and started emitting a high pitched whine. I think it's time for a new one.
