Great Pad - And here's a cheap way to inflate it

Great Pad - And here's a cheap way to inflate it
The Klymit sleeping pad was awesome. Very comfortable to lie on in any position. The fabric seems to be very durable, and the pad is light enough to backpack with. Reasonably easy to deflate and roll up.As for inflating it, this sleeping pad is basically a balloon. So what better than a balloon pump to blow it up? I bought a KMart double acting balloon pump ($3.99), some 1/4" nylon tubing, a short piece of 7/8" nylon tubing, and a plastic fitting to connect the 1/4" and 7/8" tubing ($1.50 at the hardware store). The 7/8" tubing is a "friction fit" over the valve on the Klymit pad. The tubing is pretty stiff, but if you work it a little with a broom handle first, the tubing will fit over the valve. It does not have to be perfectly tight. This arrangement pumped up the pad in less than a minute, with no human, steamy breath expended. Once the pad is up to pressure, with the 7/8" tubing still on the valve, push down on the valve and rotate it clockwise. Then remove the tubing from the valve. The nice thing is that since this is a double-acting pump, the system does not leak when you are tightening the valve. I carried this with me on a backpacking trip - it weighs nothing - and it blew up two pads several times. The only warning is that the pump is fragile-ish, so handle it appropriately. My next project will be to devise a Klymit pad DEflator, for even faster camp break up.
