See Your Target
Colorful layup arcs at 100, 150, 200 and (when applicable) 250 yards let you know exactly how far you need to hit it when laying up. And Touch Targeting lets you touch any point on the sunlight-readable display, and Approach shows the precise distance to that exact spot – fairway, hazard, landing area, or the front, middle and back of the green.<!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:"MS 明朝"; mso-font-charset:78; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:-536870145 1791491579 18 0 131231 0;} @font-face {font-family:"Cambria Math"; panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:-536870145 1107305727 0 0 415 0;} @font-face {font-family:Cambria; panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:-536870145 1073743103 0 0 415 0;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-unhide:no; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"MS 明朝"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;} .MsoChpDefault {mso-style-type:export-only; mso-default-props:yes; font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"MS 明朝"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;} @page WordSection1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.WordSection1 {page:WordSection1;} -->

Customers have mixed opinions about the size of the GPS. Some find the size absolutely small and light, while others say that it's compact, lightweight, and easy to use. They also say that the unit is easy to fit on their belt and gives perfect measurements with the look of each hole. However, some customers also mention that the screen size is kind of small, the device protection skin was too large, and the hole overview is also very small.

First, it is easy to find a course and to save favorites. You simply press play and the course is there! With the skycaddie I had to start the GPS a half hour ahead of time and put it on my car dash to find a satellite. And from time to time it would lose the signal. I use the cart holding device in the cup holder and center the G6 so both of us can read the distances. Seldom do I need to carry the G6 to my ball. The "grip it" part of the cart device holds the G6 securely. And it keeps the signal, not losing it from time to time. The Skycaddie was miserable not knowing if it would pick up a satellite by the time we got to the first tee and then losing it from time to time on the course and having to reboot!. This is office stuff, not golf course stuff.
The course preview is really nice as well. You can see in advance the courses you are playing plus visit old courses you have played in the past. This is much better than simply looking at a scorecard.
Recharging is easy with a plug in similar to a smart phone. The Skycaddie for reasons I never understood had a screw in charger difficult to align at times. Also the G6 connects easily to the website for course updates. The SkyCaddie was really a chore to get connected to the website to load in courses you were going to play. And the download took a lot of time. The only negative with the G6 is the recharge cord is a bit short. The 15 hours of play may be a myth! We use about 50% of the battery on a 4 hour round and we seldom play more than 27 holes anyway and recharge after every round. So the batter charge is fine for a round of golf but would likely not work to two days of 36 holes each.
On course I need primarily distance to green, front, back, center and trap carry. I'll adjust the pin from 125 in, but beyond that, relocating the pin is wishful thinking on distance control! But front, back and trap carry distances are important to me. In the green view you see the green clearly and can move the pin. The distance to carry hazards and lay up is also nice and I use this.
I haven't used the scoring or club distances. I am old school using a score card, circling greens in regulation, arrows for left or right tee shots and recording number of putts. Later I use a web site to enter information about my round and analyze. I'm older, but I can still remember each hole I play for 18! To me I don't want too much device distraction when I play.
So, by the time you get all the stuff like a cart device to hold the G6, a carry bag, and screen protector, you are into it for about $350. This is well worth the price. The device protection skin was too large for the G6, but it is not worth it to return.
I tried Swing by Swing on my cell phone but wanted a dedicated device. The Swing by Swing worked well and was better than the old SkyCaddie. I also worried about how much data I was using! The G6 is superior to my old SkyCaddie in every way. But my SkyCaddie was 6 years old. I would likely have gotten the upgraded SkyCaddie if not for the annual charges. Apparently SkyCaddie has a lot of green information like slope and so forth which would help, but not all courses are charted.
I am very pleased with the G6.
Initial updating and registering via computer USB connection was simple and straightforward with no glitches. I find that I can easily get two full rounds out of a single charge, with approx. 25-30% charge remaining. I haven't used the scoring feature yet, mainly because I trust pencil and paper more than electronic devices. The belt clip works good, and the unit snaps into it with a click so you know it's not going to fall out. I have found that once the unit acquires the satellites you can actually put it in a pocket and it will still work. Satellite acquisition can take up to 10 minutes on some courses, so I always turn it on about 15 minutes before starting a round. Thus far my unit has never had to be rebooted during a round. Bright sunlight can make viewing a bit of a challenge, but I think all similar color GPS units have the same problem (perhaps with the exception of the wrist watch model which has a black numerical display only.
For me, a GPS isn't a toy...it's an absolute must on those "cart path only" days and on courses that don't have cart mounted GPS units. I find that a GPS speeds up play tremendously and takes all of the guesswork out of club selection. In my opinion, the G6 is the best of the bunch, and Garmin has a reputation for making a quality GPS. It seems that no matter where you shop this unit, the price is the same, so selecting a seller (like Amazon) that isn't going to give you a hard time in the event you have a problem right out of the box is important. I expect that the next generation of Garmin golf GPS units will have a satellite view of the actual hole layout, but I didn't want to wait that long.

It is easy to pick up courses that are nearby, or by name, as the typing panel is very responsive.
The facility to move the flag to its position on the green, and override the standard central position, is pracical.
The Approach G6 has a capacity to record the scores of 4 players for Strokes, Stableford, etc. which is very useful especially during inclement weather. Recording the average distance reached by each club used should interest most players. Information on courses played and scorecards may be downloaded to a computer for the record (by the really keen golfer).
Although at the upper end of the price bracket the many features of the Garmin G6 Approach and free updates make it worth it.
While 15 hours of battery life is good, it would be nice to have longer before a recharge.
It is very handy and I find the screen easy to read and inputting scores is quick and easy. It is also useful to be able monitor how far I'm hitting the ball with my clubs and being able to review my rounds. Sad but true!
I think it will come into its own when I play in Italy in June as I have trouble playing courses laid out in metric format so the Approach G6 will take some of the guesswork out.
Overall I am very happy that I took the plunge and treated myself.
