Product Description
A group of college students venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of their friend's sister, who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods, but as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, they begin to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined.

The movie focuses on James of whom is Heather from part 1's younger brother. James sets up an expedition to see if Heather still lives. Joining him is his best friend Peter, Peter's beautiful girlfriend Ashley, James's beautiful other friend and camera operator Lisa, in addition are James's online source of footage regarded what Heather dealt with while in the house in the woods, Lane and Lane's beautiful girlfriend Talia. Lane and Talia come along claiming to be locals of Burkittsville and also claiming to know the Black Hills Forest like the back of their hands.
To me this movie works perfectly well by comparing it to the first but even more by allowing it to be it's own thing as well. Allow me to elaborate. The Blair Witch Project gives the audience great suspense and ambiguity as to what's going on as to whether it's all really happening within the movie or is something else of which gives way to the its fear and suspense, It also offers beautiful scenery, convincing acting, a human against nature element, cool transitions between not only night and day but also the shots and framing from the color camera to the black and white one, and it has a lot of memorable moments to offer the audience that work so well to inform them and to scare them. This movie unfortunately doesn't make as much use of the black and white camera but it still offers many beautiful shots and camera angles of Black Hills Forest, there are cool looking shots of not only the shots above the woods without or without the drone, but the lovely shots of the breeze blowing the trees with sunshine coming through, you get eye-candy as Lisa, Ashley, and Talia are all really gorgeous and hot, most of the characters and the actors playing them are intense, in character, and believable. Character wise Lisa is the absolute least interesting as she is the most underused character of which says very little, doesn't get alot of scenes where she's doing anything, and worst of all it's just not clear as to what the relationship is between Lisa and James. What are they to eachother and how did they meet? The tension and fear from the appearances of the Stickman figures and piles of rocks soon mount up with the group having no total idea of who or what is responsible for their being there. This time the scares and fear are focused on thinning out the group by having some of the group(meaning at first a small number of the young chief characters then later on a larger number being taken out) before they even reach Rustin Parr's old cabin just as it happened a bit in the first Blair Witch only this time with more of a body count and this time the whole group is being terrorized and soon victimized.
As the Black Hills Forest is once again a beautiful yet incredibly frightening location of great isolation where the Blair Witch aka Elly Kedward can be hiding and not to spoil anything much but she also has certain mysterious creatures to help her as well. This movie is less focused on the paranoia of others and who/whom to trust as the first went into although there is a little of that in this movie.
I love the scenes where anything that they bring with them such as their drone, tents and whatnot get destroyed causing our characters to run for their lives and do what they can to survive their several perils.
While these characters may not be as cool or accessible as Heather, Josh, and Mike nor are the actors here quite as good, they not only do all their best with their acting limitations but they are believable enough in their performances and memorable enough as well.
While there isn't much in the way of any of the characters coming right out and saying it more info is offered about the Blair Witch's powers over time, giving certain people commands so that they can leave the woods freely, and of course more showcased on her destructive powers is given. Don't worry that's not exactly a spoiler as it's mostly subtle info that the viewers must sort out themselves.
Overall, while this sequel may not be entirely as great as the first, it comes a close second at least. It mostly lacks in the added creepiness of the b&w camerawork that the first movie has, doesn't have entirely as accessible characters as the first, and the actors aren't entirely as good but however the characters are pretty well decent, the girls are all hot babes with adventurous and go-getter attitudes to say nothing of a desire to take risks, the guys have go-getter attitudes, senses of adventure, and are risk takers as well, the Black Hills Forest continues to be isolated, secluded, and still proving to be easy to get lost in, the tensions and fear hit an even higher not with the Blair Witch showcasing her powers even more this time, the appearance of the Stickman figures and the rock piles continuing to scare and baffle the chief characters adds the usual tension and fear, and other than all of that you get updates with the tech used for the search for Heather with them using things like drones, laptops, and tablets give this movie something new and 21st century to add with all of classic feel plus. One more thing, if you are like me and you are a big fan of the first movie and not a big fan of the second then this movie is for you. For those that did like the second Blair Witch movie and wanted to see a direct sequel to that they will be very disappointed as this movie makes no mention or reference to the second movie and it doesn't pick up where it leaves off either. Personally I prefer it that way myself. A MUST SEE!!! 10 STARS OUT OF 10!!!
::SPOILERS AHEAD::
90% of the film takes place in an alternate reality which I thought was a really cool take on the film. The characters were never going to make it out of the woods as the witch was toying with them. The scene where they are by the fallen tree that was struck by lightning is quite interesting since when they got back there, the house now stood right next to the same tree that was not there before. The whole lost time/delayed time piece was really interesting as well. This go around you actually get to see the witch this time. Actors were believable with an impressive performance from Callie Hernandez who is new to the scene and is quite beautiful to boot! Again, not sure why all the negativity with this one, this is a true sequel to the original Blair Witch easily forgetting the awful Blair Witch 2 Book Of Shadows. Give the film a chance and realize that the characters are stuck in the witch's alternate universe and I think you'll enjoy it more. A fun task is attempting to figure out when they enter the alternate world, I like to think it's when they crossed the river. I bought this title and it will have multiple veiwings.
Extras include an audio commentary and an impressive feature length documentary about the making of the film. Impressive set.
He is convinced that she's still alive (pretty much the only aspect of the story that bothered me because why would she still be alive and just hanging out in the woods for 20 years?!) so he convinces his girlfriend, best friend Peter and Peter's girlfriend to go find the YouTuber and try to find his sister and the house that gave us the climax in the original film, starting with the place where Lane found the tapes and going from there.
Initially, I suppose one could argue that the first act is a rehash of the original - group of stupid kids go into the woods to search for this witch and get lost. But other reviews have said that this sequel doesn't add anything new to the mythology of the original. I couldn't disagree more! First, they expand greatly on the mythology. We're reminded about what we were told in the original, but then little bits are expanded and introduced. Also, the latest technology is put to great effect. Each character has an earpiece camera, there are a couple handheld cameras, and there's a drone that the characters can use to go above the trees. These POV perspectives bring us into the story in an amazing way that the original couldn't. When a character turns, the camera goes with them. Effectively, we the viewers are almost like one of the characters. This, I believe, brought a freshness to this sequel, despite starting out much like the first.
The second act is where the film shines. Yes, we return to that famous house, but even that is expanded in many ways, much beyond the first. The additions are exciting and claustrophobic - and totally effective! I won't give anything away, except to say that we do see the witch - or whatever the hell that thing is. I'm not convinced this is a strength. The appeal of the Blair Witch in the original is that we never saw her. Yet, in the making of documentary, the filmmakers flat out tell us we don't see the witch in their film. We see something (that, quite honestly, looked a little stupid to me) but I'm not sure we really should have. The film works on a better level when it lets our imagination run wild.
Speaking of the Making of Documentary, it is SO amazing! The film itself is 89 minutes. The documentary runs 116 minutes! Oh yeah, they took more time showing us how they made it than the actual movie itself. And the wealth of information is amazing and exhaustive. By the end, you come away with a great appreciation for what they tried to do. They also delve into the mythology of the Blair Witch, and explain why they made certain choices.
I enjoyed this. I'm glad they did it. I wouldn't mind seeing where they could take this even further, though I doubt that'll happen, since the film under performed in theaters. I suspect a big part of that was that they were too secretive about this being a Blair Witch Project sequel until really close to its release. There wasn't a chance for buildup of excitement over it. Every horror fan knows that buildup of suspense is EVERYTHING in a horror flick.
