The bass is rich without being overwhelming and can be adjusted depending on your taste. The dialogue mode is helpful for watching sit-coms, political thrillers, dramas, etc. where you need to pay attention to what people are saying. In this mode, speech sounds crisper and is privileged over sound effects and background music. I also like the universal remote. It took a little bit of effort to figure everything out, but I connected my cable, TV, and ROKU. The Bluetooth was super easy to setup and works great. You can control the Bose volume right from your iPhone.
Cons:
-There is no indication on the screen as to the level of the volume. Not a big deal, but it's hard to get a sense of how loud you really have it if you have background sounds like A/C or dishwashers nearby. This could also be a problem if you have thin walls.
-Bass is also a little hard to gauge. There are two LED lights that give you some indication (top illuminated=lots of bass; both lights illuminated=mid-level bass; lower light illuminated=not much bass). This can be challenging because you don't often hear the full bass level unless there is a lot of it consistently. Try to play something with a lot of bass to gauge where you want it to be. You may be able to get a visual display if you have a receiver, but I'm not sure.
Pro Tips:
-You should shut off your TV's speakers entirely to get the most out of your Bose. If you have both on at once, you'll get a strange echoing. Muting the TV works, but this is only a temporary solution since the mute setting gets erased each time you turn off/on your TV. You will probably need to go into your TV's setup menu in order to shut off the speakers.
-The first universal remote code may not work for your device. You can cycle through codes for your brand of TV/Cable box/Blue Ray by pressing + on the volume button. Do this until you can get a response from the device.
-The volume buttons on the universal remote ONLY control the Bose unit. They will never change the volume or mute the TV speakers. That's why it's best to shut off the TV speakers entirely.
We use it mostly for TV in a medium to small sized space and don't want a full system with sub-woofer that would bother neighbors.
We are pleased with the sound options for TV. The normal sound is very full and a huge improvement, of course, over standard TV sound. The "clear voice' mode works well when I need to attenuate the volume and want to hear the dialog well while not awakening others in the household. I do not really use the "base mode" at all.
The sound for music provides good, full sound and I haven't had any connection issues using from an iPad/iPhone. I haven't tried using from an Android, but don't see why it would be any issue. I had read some reviews that the bluetooth wouldn't connect. After turning on the speaker and pressing the bluetooth button on the remote, you do have to go into "Settings" > "Bluetooth" on your iPad each time. At least I have done this since I tend not to use it for music very often. Anyway, following these steps, I have not had a single issue since I bought this about a month ago.
I usually connect for music with bluetooth, but also connect using the analog plugs/connections from AirTunes using an Airport Express. This allows me to use it as a speaker from ITunes.
The remote is much better than I expected. This universal is the best alternative I've tried among Harmony remotes and others. Of course, the TiVo remote is the most ergonomic, but it won't control the volume (speakers). I've found that I now almost always use the Bose remote so I can control the sound, channels and everything well. The buttons on this Universal remote make sense, and only a few features I've not found an analog for (from the TiVo remote).
This is not sold as a "surround" unit, but with the right setup and correct cords/input it does attempt directional surround, with moderate success! As a gamer I can tell what side the bullets, arrows, footsteps are coming from, (crazy game, I know) and in movies you know when a character is standing to the side/behind someone. I have my unit in a large-corner with walls to bounce off of - HOWEVER my one con is that the sound is still impeded (as with other Bose units) when something is in the way of a side speaker.
I have a Bose SoundTouch 300 and I would actually prefer this to my soundbar if it didn't have its sub, (with the sub I don't know if there IS a better soundbar) - though this is considerably larger in depth but less in width. I am sad they discontinued this but glad I was able to grab one! My favorite Bose I have ever purchased under $500. If you need a unit to set a TV on, this should be a no-brainer.
*Please note, I have seen a couple of reviews confuse this unit with the Solo 5, VERY DIFFERENT. The SOLO 15 is a 5 speaker, tv-stand unit with great depth, clarity, and attempts surround sound. The SOLO 5 is listed at half the retail price and is essentially a large 2 speaker center speaker with poor sound that does not meet Bose standards by any means. Hope that clears any confusion!
