I'm never going back to a 60hz display.
    4 Stars
I'm never going back to a 60hz display.
I bought this after much deliberation on what my next PC Gaming rig upgrade would be and am currently 1.5 years into ownership after writing this review so let this reflect both: (1) a first-time gaming monitor purchasing experience, and (2) a gamer/designer who's lived with the buyer's remorse for a while! This was brought to sit beside my ASUS PB287Q 4k 60hz display I've had since Jan 2016 to be more of the PLAY monitor while the 4k one is more for work. You can check my review for that one on my profile! This monitor hit all my criteria for a gaming monitor: it's big, has great clarity, and amazing G-Sync/144hz capabilities. I was reading/watching lots of tech news that High/Variable Refresh Rates in PC gaming is by in large one of the biggest game changers when it comes optimal gaming experiences– far more than 4k gaming (which really isn't a thing yet). I'd have to agree. Upgrading from a 60hz monitor has blown me away even if it was a 50% step down in resolution.Since I'm running with a GTX 1070 and don't plan to upgrade for some time, G-Sync on this monitor works fantastic once everything is set up in your Nvidia Control Panel. As an FPS action game fan I cannot explain how CRUCIAL bumping everything up past 100+ FPS with zero screen-tearing helps with bolstering your gaming experience. I would equate getting a high-refresh monitor w/ adaptive sync to getting a brand new graphics card: all online gaming is far more manageable, you can tell what's going on WAY easier. My giant backlog of Steam was also breathed new life replaying the Half-Life with maxed out FPS was an absolute joy.All this to say that if you're looking for a next leap in purchasing a gaming monitor this could be it... though... other flavors/brands may check all your boxes just as much as this one. I'll be honest I may have blown way too much money because I didn't really know what I wanted. At the time I don't regret the decision... but wish I could have saved a few $100 by waiting for what's changed in the gaming monitor landscape:1. Variable Refresh Rate standards have become way more open so you're not locked into needing G-Sync anymore. G-Sync monitors were quite a bit pricier but I wanted that sweet sweet VRR without worrying about compatibility. Now some FreeSync monitors play nice with G-Sync cards so your options are way bigger. That said the peace of mind of having a G-Sync monitor and Nvidia card has proven itself, I've had nothing but smooth experiences and no screen-tearing on any of my games!2. I wouldn't obsess over getting something that's over 120hz/144hz. After this the diminishing returns become extremely poor – not necessarily because you can't tell how many frames are being pumped into your eyeballs but more because you'll need a extremely great graphics card to even push that number of frames with a 1440p resolution, higher-quality settings on newer games. Most of the PC games I run (Halo MCC, Doom Eternal, Overwatch, Borderlands) really sit around 70-100 FPS avg with the resolution & quality settings I'm happy with. To that point I have NEVER had a use for the 165hz overclocking feature on this monitor, but at least I know this monitor will stand the test of time if I upgrade my card in the future.Overall, though, for all of the above ramblings ... this monitor kills it on the refresh rate game. The rest really is *shrug*, fine. The panel quality is great, no problems with dead pixels, & color quality is serviceable after some tweaking. There's quite a lot of light bleed around the edges when the screen is dark as seen in other reviews, but honestly all of that goes away when you're locked onto a buttery-smooth game. Same goes for viewing angles, not really the best but unnoticeable if it's just you 1-on-1 with the monitor. Overall build quality is fantastic. Bezels are thin and have zero depth added off the face, the stand is everything you need past a monitor arm–sturdy, hefty, able to twist/raise to any viewing you'd need. Flip it 90 degrees and play shmups in 144hz! Also – the surprising small feature I've come to love most about this is the Blue Light Filter toggle since I largely game at night. Some things I wish were better were the clunky joystick OSD menu that dedicates 2 of the 5 physical buttons buttons to access features I never use (overclocking, FPS counter, crosshairs overlay) over one's I use daily (changing source, enabling/disabling blue light filter) which are buried under the menu. Extremely annoying UX decision there, at least let me customize what buttons do? The GaMeR iLluMiNaTioN on the stand is tasteless and distracting, the ROG logo looks like Goku's eye as a tribal tattoo... why would I want it glowing red at me? This crap aggravates me because I wonder how much less it would cost without terrible "Gamer Aesthetics"-- thankfully you can turn it off in the menu and never worry about it again. The back inputs/outputs are on a slant for some reason, you'd think that'd help with access but I find it far more annoying to try and cram USB things in the back from the front if I need it.Final thought is that I'm extremely happy with being brand-loyal to ASUS. I've had ZERO problems with this monitor and it's been nothing but a huge benefit to have, I'm extremely impressed and satisfied with my experience. Their 3-year warranty is legit from first hand experience with my 4k monitor and they will RMA you if there are any major problems!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing monitor if you can get a good one. The "panel lottery" is real.

    Edit 2/1/2019 - Replacement Monitor:

Amazon replaced the first monitor and had it delivered within the next day. 5/5 for the customer service from Amazon's part. The new monitor is almost perfect, but nothing to complain about. There's no horrific backlight bleed like the first monitor. There's a small spot in the top right corner, but its not really noticeable once you adjust the settings. Can't complain.

Besides that monitor itself is AMAZING. Everything is buttery smooth (165hz overclock) and the colors pop. Definitely worth the price, but don't settle if you get a bad/poor piece. Tell Amazon if you get a bad one and I'm sure they'll take care of you.

Also, the packaging was minimal, but effective. The monitor came in fully assembled and ready to go.

League of legends picture is the 2nd replacement monitor. The backlight bleed picture is the first monitor.

    Old Review:
    *1/5 stars*
I went in expecting some levels of back light bleed, but what I got from my monitor were levels that I couldn't just overlook. The top left corner seemed ok, but the right top + right bottom corners had this horrible back light bleed that left a yellowish glow. Once you saw it you would just keep noticing it. I have a dark wall paper, so every time I'm on the windows desktop I would just glare at me.

As for the monitor while gaming, its beautiful and overclocks like a charm! Coming from a 60hz 1080p monitor, this was a big step up. For the price it's a great IPS monitor (if you can get one with little or no BLB).

Test out the monitor once you receive it and before you set it all up. Hopefully you will get a good one. May the odds be in your favor!

I have requested a replacement for the monitor. Hoping that the next one will be better. I will update the review once the new one arrives.
