Good camera, could use some improvements
All photos are unedited straight out of the camera.I bought this camera for a trip to Kauai where we would be snorkeling and hiking and such. I also intend to use it for ski trips. I'm not super impressed with the overall photo quality. It's not bad until you try zooming in a little and then everything becomes a bit grainy, regardless of the light and ISO. The photos just don't have the crispness I've seen in other cameras. It's fine for family photos, but don't expect to be taking professional-level photos with this camera. Even my Note8 takes better photos. However, I purchased it mainly for its underwater capabilities. It does a decent job at underwater photos. Underwater photos with the flash resulted in spots (glares off of the bubbles) visible on the lens (see example). It also didn't do great with underwater moving shots. When you're in water with a strong current, it's nearly impossible to hold still to take a photo, resulting in lots of blurred shots. I included several underwater photos. The water was a bit murky, so don't blame the camera for that.Colors come out fairly true. We got some great shots of the sunset that looked pretty close to how they looked in real life. It also didn't blow out the sky like some cameras do. Skin tones look warm and natural, even when using the fill flash for backlit photos. The auto feature is OK, but I recommend delving deeper into the settings for better performance. The camera itself takes a while to get used to if you're using anything besides the basic settings. It did not come with a user's manual. You have to download that from their website. The panorama setting is horrid. It does some of the worst stitching I've seen. I tried several times and never got a good pano. (see example) And it takes a long time to process. I probably will not be using this feature much, if at all. My phone does a better job.The microscope mode is pretty cool and the image stacking setting works surprisingly well, even with slight movement. Without the image stacking, it takes a bit of practice and patience to get it to focus exactly where you want as it has a pretty narrow depth of field. To see an example with and without image stacking, check out the two coral photos. The timelapse is OK, but I will continue to use my phone for this as it does a better job. You're limited to 299 frames and it saves them as individual photos as well. I'd rather it just save them once and give me more frames. I do timelapse recordings of my artwork and don't like having stop working to reset it every hour.Night shots with a tripod come out pretty nice. Not so good without a tripod. I was pleasantly surprised by the low light photos like the one of the boat on the dock. This was handheld before sunrise.Video is decent, but it has a hard time refocusing if you zoom in or out. This became pretty frustrating. It also records the very loud action of the zoom. You can hear this in the spider web video.Battery life was great for normal use. It ran down pretty quickly when we were snorkeling in the cold water, but still held up long enough to get some decent shots. I will probably pick up an additional battery for future trips.I wish I had purchased some sort of protector for the lens as it got scratched up pretty quickly. Doesn't seem to affect photo quality, but I only anticipate it getting worse with each beach trip.Waterproofing held up well. Not so much as a drop in the compartments. I've dropped this thing several times (I'm a huge klutz) and it continues to work great. My biggest complaint is that I end up with a weird blurry circle in photos where I've zoomed in. After reading some forum posts, it seems that this is a common problem with this camera and there does not seem to be a fix. This is the main reason for my 4 star review. You can see this clearly in one of my photos of the coast. It looks like a lens flare, but shows up even in normal lighting conditions. I just used this photo as an example because it is very clear in this one.Overall, it does its job, but I expect a better performance for the price. I would have fewer complaints if it were about $100 less. Might go with Nikon next time.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an amazing point and shoot, 100% best in its category for durable cameras.
Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2019
This camera crushes it in the durable point and shoot category of cameras to the point that there is literally nothing in the action camera format that is better at any price.

    Pros:
It will take raw photos unlike basically every other option for action cams. If you're serious about taking photos...this matters a LOT.

The 20 FPS burst mode is awesome, and it will take 4k video.

The LED "oranges out" spots that are too bright, so when you're shooting at things like sunsets, you can still see the picture. VERY cool design, I wish my Nikon DSLR has this.

The different photo "modes" are pretty good, especially for people who aren't taking fully manually configured photos. The sunset mode took GORGEOUS pictures when even a PIxel 3XL and an iphone X got bleached out and weren't able to take clear shots.

It is actually waterproof...I went scuba diving with it in hand down to 12 meters in Bali, and it was perfect! If I was going to go deep I'd get a housing for it.

The macro photo quality is unmatched. This takes better macro shots than my Nikon D5200 does with a real macro lens. You do need the macro flash ring though or your macro shots will be crappy, but it's cheap and pops on and off very easily.

It is very durable. I dropped mine while at a Mets game on the stairs, and it bounced down more than 10 stairs before someone stopped it for me. The only damage was a cracked screen protector. (You should buy screen protectors for this).

    Cons
The zoom is only OK. There are other point and shoots that crush this for telephoto shots.

The UI is pretty crappy. I have had DSLR cameras for years, so I'm pretty comfortable with camera menus in general...but this is very non intuitive.

The RAW format that Olympus uses isn't recognized by Windows 10 even with the new plugins. You need real photo viewing software like Adobe Lightroom, GIMP, Photoshop, etc. Olympus does offer Olympus Workspace for free, but it kinda sucks.

The sound on video captures isn't that awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good point and shoot for vacation just don't expect miracles from it.
Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2018
Tad bit temperamental but is waterproof got underwater shots to prove it. Also love the macro on this camera if you want something for taking pictures on vacation that is durable this is your camera. If you want something for taking underwater shots at the pool this is the camera for you. If you want something for deep sea diving you may want to consider a different camera. Is very durable dropped it several times on vacation still works like a charm. No issues with picture quality but focus goes in and out while it searches and no touch screen like my canon t4i. Has several settings for customizing your shot and standard macro is amazing on this camera. Great starter camera for novice photographer not looking to make major investments in lens and has several accessories for it am still working through those before I can share honest review if they are worth the money you spend on them but will post as soon as I am done testing those items on the the items I have purchased.

Update one year after purchasing item and using it.....
Love this camera purchased it for a trip and have gotten some amazing shots. Went back through all the images I have captured using it and am blown away what this little point and shoot / programmable camera can do. Love the using the remote shutter app on my smart phone and has taken some truly amazing shots while kayaking with it and just capturing our life together.

5.0 out of 5 stars This camera is worth every penny.
Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2018
I bought this camera after reading all the reviews and viewing all the videos I could find on YouTube. I was really disappointed regarding lack of realistic underwater content in any of the reviews. I’m very particular about photo quality and therefore knew I’d need a high quality camera. That being said, I ended up purchasing the TG5 as it’s highest ranked online. I couldn’t tell from any reviews whether I could truly depend on it being waterproof while snorkeling, because all the YouTube videos “recommend” the housing that costs almost as much as the camera. I’m picky with picture quality, but I’m a beginner at snorkeling, and I don’t scuba. This camera is truly amazing. I’m beating myself up a bit for not getting to know all the settings before I left for the Caribbean and here’s why: 1. In auto mode, you can’t manually set the flash. You need to use the custom setting mode to set fill flash for inside pictures. Otherwise, you’ll likely end up with slightly blurry under exposed pictures indoors in the evening. 2. If you are swimming in clear Caribbean water that is somewhat shallow with no one around, you won’t need the specialized fish settings. However, if you are swimming in a group where water is deeper, try the fish settings. Otherwise your photos end up green.
I was nervous due to reviews saying this camera got fried the first time in the water. I assure you that if you lock the access doors to the charge port & memory card/battery, this won’t happen. Everyday when you get home, follow the instructions by submersing the camera in cool water, shake the debris off, then rinse under a flow of clean water, and it works like magic. Definitely get a floating wrist band to protect your investment. By all accounts, people think this camera looks like a silly point and shoot. However I’d challenge you to take it underwater then hold it against the fabric of your clothing and take a macro. This camera is incredible. I did notice that if there is any lingering spot of saltwater on the lense, you’ll get a hazy spot on your pictures. Make sure your lense is clean. I have an Olympus PL5 and a TG5. Incredible photo quality. I will try to post a few underwater pictures from the TG5 below. The turtle is green - taken on auto with about 25 people swimming around me and he’s about 10 feet below me. The starfish is about 12” away in clear water on fish snapshot. The fish are auto setting, no one else around in salt water.

This is easily the best point and shoot camera ever for close-up (macro) photography. I bought this for field research, after all those heralded names like Canon and Nikon disappointed. I found that those brands fall far behind Olympus in every way. Totally waterproof and sturdy. This is the best one for biology fieldwork, especially for insects, spiders, small plants, lichens, etc.

Wow. This camera really impressed me. What a step up from the Panasonic Lumix TS and FS series point and shoot cameras. I had been using before.

If you are into taking pictures of things very close up (as I am), this camera takes getting close for macro shots a step beyond. They call it microscope mode and it's amazing!

The free app let's me use my smartphone to download pictures through directly connecting to the cameras built in wifi. You can also use the smartphone as a remote control to take pictures without touching the camera.

If you use the GPS or wireless connection to smartphone a lot, I would get an extra battery.

Sidenote, the camera charges by plugging the camera directly into a USB port. I tested it and you can use a portable USB battery backup charger to power the camera while it is in use.
