Pretty great, but with a few irritations
3 Stars
Pretty great, but with a few irritations
OK, so my son got some Airpods for his birthday a few weeks ago, so that is the benchmark that I am going to use.Up until this point I had resisted getting Bluetooth earbuds as I have been a diehard wired headphone guy. The only experience I have had was when I received a pair of Bluetooth earbuds from work as a Christmas gift about five years ago. Those things were a pain to deal with, you never knew when you were synced, they only held charge for about an hour and you had to plug them in for an hour to recharge them. Then my son got his Airpods and I was amazed at the ease of use, convenience, 3 hour plus run time, and how quickly they can recharge with the little case. Sound quality was decent, but there was a lot of sound leakage in my opinion.I thought I was ready to give Bluetooth earbuds another shot, being an Android guy I did some research and came upon these Soundcore Anker Liberty earbuds. Based on the reviews, I was sold.So what do I like? Well, the sound is better than the Airpods in my opinion. They seal into your ears and provide an isolated listening experience. I was wearing them while doing yard work and got spooked when my wife had to tap me on the shoulder to get my attention! As someone else stated, they need something of a break in period to fully develop a solid sound. Not a lot of super bass, but its good and plenty of highs. Mids sometimes are a little lacking but it’s not a big problem. Overall, they are pretty damn good for the price.Battery life is great, and you can recharge them at least three times with the case. I am getting easily 3.5 hours of listening time, so you can get about 12 – 15 hours out of the buds and case combined. Once paired, the Bluetooth icon on your phone will indicate battery life as well. Note: the AA battery is for size reference only – it has nothing to do with how these are powered!!Build quality is very good for the price, they feel solid and the case is well built with a nice matte finish. Also provides three indicator lights to tell you how much charge is left on the case.So what don’t I like? Well for one, why Micro-USB to charge the case? Worse, the cord provided is like 3 inches long, so it’s pretty much useless. USB-C and a decent cord would make me much happier. That way I can charge my phone and earphones with the same cord, instead of having to carry two different cords in my bag. Heck, just give me USB-C and no cord and I would be happy.Pairing is not as seamless as it should be. Once paired, they are supposed to sync and power on when you remove them from the case. This doesn’t always happen. I have removed them from the case, popped them in and started a song to find the music coming from my phone and not the earbuds. SO then I have to manually turn them on. Other times the right earbud will power on and I have to manually power on the left one as well.Advancing and rewinding is a bit goofy as well. You tap the right to advance and the left to go back. However, you don’t just tap – you have to hold your finger there for a bit to get the track to go forward or back. Also, you cannot go back to the previous song – you can only restart the track you are listening to. No volume control either, you have to use your phone for this. The Airpods are way superior in these functions.Lastly, looks wise the buds have that glossy piano black finish that looks dirty all the time from just normal handling, matte black might have been a little better in this department. Also, get used to people asking you where you got the “black Airpods”…there is no mistaking the blatant Airpods look these have.So yeah, maybe I’m a little nitpicky, as these are almost half the price of Airpods – but overall I think they are a pretty good deal for the price and performance and do what I need out of them. You could do worse, and yeah, maybe you could do better but I would definitely give these a shot.

5/27/19 - Update. Anger/Soundcore support reached out to me...yes they monitor this page.... and offered me a replacement unit. I received and have used them for about a week now. I have to say all my issues are gone. The volume on a phone call is great, the buds shut off when I put them in the case, and the case stays shut. I really must have gotten a bad unit cause the new ones work flawlessly. Kudos to Soundcore support for caring about their customers.

Also, as I am prone to do, I replace they nylon/rubber tips with a pair of Comply foam tips for totally wireless buds. They fit fine and best of all they go into the case and charge with the foam tips on. The foam tips improve the quality of the sound a lot for me by creating a better seal. Well done by Soundcore to give enough room in the case to allow for the use of foam tips. I only wish they came with a set. But not a big deal as I have so many sets of Comply tips laying around.

So, with all this I am very impressed with these buds and with Soundcore support. It’s really nice to see a company that cares.

Original Review:
I’ve had these for a few days now. I have had a few issues. First, and most important, is that the volume on a call on my iPhone X is way too low. I have the volume turned up all the way on my phone and the sound of the person I am talking to is difficult to hear. I switched to another set of buds that I want to replace and I had to turn down the volume. This doesn’t seem to be an issue when listening to music. So strange.

The second issue I have had twice is the buds don’t disconnect when I put them in the case. They stay connected. So when I tried to dictate a text message I could figure out when the phone couldn’t hear me and why I couldn’t hear any phone sounds. Opening and closing the case and even pulling the buds out and putting them back in didn’t solve the issue. I had to go into Bluetooth settings and disconnect them that way.

The third issue is the case doesn’t seem to want to stay closed. There is no click or snap shut and it seems as if the case stays open a bit. Maybe some poor fit and finish.

I will give these a bit more time but so far very disappointing. I have the original Liberty+ totally wireless buds and love them but they are inconvenient as phone buds as I don’t wear them all day long. I usually wear phone buds when I need them. So far, the Airs are below Anker’s usual quality. I give them 3 stars cause music sounds pretty good.

I've been using these earbuds for several months, and with 2 different phones, and I really enjoy them. I mainly listen to podcasts while walking somewhere - not while driving, not seated at a desk - so my assessment of sound quality is not really applicable. They're clear, get plenty loud to overcome street noise, and they create an impressive seal in my ears. (Honestly that seal means I don't really have to crank them up to hear them in noisy environments, which helps save my hearing.)

I'm amazed by the battery life. I go weeks without having to charge the case, and I usually do that when it gets down to one light lit on the case. I've never let the case go to zero.

About that case. . . . It doesn't feel sturdy - especially the lid. The whole thing creaks with a squeeze in my hand. But I did drop it once recently, and it survived. I also carry it daily in my pocket with my keys, and it has held up beautifully. The included picture is from the day of this review, after months of use. My favorite thing about the case is its size. It's perfectly pocketable, unlike some cheaper wireless earbud cases I've had. This one is barely noticeable in a pocket, and that's essential for me.

They also connect effortlessly to my phone. They're connected by the time I get them in my ears. Not sure what more I could want in that regard.

What I don't love are the touch controls. They're the main reason I've dropped a star. The most important control for me is play/pause - and the double tap to do that is a real challenge, even after months of practice. For one thing, the only way you know if your gesture was registered is moments after you've done it, when something either plays or pauses. Because it doesn't happen instantly and there's no other feedback, I have to wait and see. And sometimes that means I'm waiting for nothing to happen. It's a poorly conceived experience. It wouldn't be so bad if the double tap felt reliable, but it doesn't. It's very finicky - requiring just the right amount of time between taps, on just the right part of the earbud, and that's tough to nail. I also don't like the feel of tapping an earbud while it's in my ear. It translates as two loud thuds, and feels uncomfortable.

While using these earbuds with an older Pixel 2 XL, I was getting annoying dropouts when I'd walk through intersections with traffic signals. This has been the case with other Bluetooth earbuds, so I just took it as a limitation of the wireless technology. I've since upgraded to a Pixel 4 XL, and I'm no longer getting those dropouts!

For the price and convenience, I'm happy.

It has potential, but it fails in many levels. The most disappointing part is the connectivity issue with the left ear piece (i constantly lose connection and had to re-pair it) and charging it in the case is spotty, the ear pieces doesn't seem to flush all the way in so it does not always charge properly. I want to like it but I probably will just buy an Apple airpods instead.

UPDATE: 9/27

Nothing changed. I have Anker respond to this rating and followed their suggestions, to no avail. The earbuds just cuts in and out all the time when used together. A product shouldn't have these kind of issues, and owners of these product should not have to go through loopholes to make a device work. Anker should spend a little more on R&D to create competitive product. I'm bringing my 2 stars down to 1 and No, I do not recommend this product. It's such a headache.

Update: 10/15/2019

I received a replacement for the defective earphones a couple of weeks ago. Anker was kind enough to honor the warranty on the item, and shipped it fast. I have been testing it the past two weeks and I have not encountered the problems I was having with the other earphone. Both sides works well, connect to my iPhone 7 plus and does not disconnect. So far so good. I'm glad I contacted Anker, and I am pleased by their quick response and good customer service. While it was frustrating dealing with the first earphone I had, I'm glad to get a replacement that works.

It is a good earphone. the quality of sound and material are very decent. It is a very good true wireless earphone for the price range, It's half the price of an Airpods and Anker honors the warranty on it in case you get a defective product. Changing my 1 star rating to 5 star.
