My 2nd was a used Denon I got to get me buy, so I had something that supported HDMI. It did not function well, was a tad klunky, and I hated the remote. But it was used.
After seeing the recommendation on the 4K episode of My Life In Gaming, I decided to give Denon another chance. Especially since how much I loved my first Denon receiver. Set up and calibration was pretty easy. Especially since all the menus are displayed on my TV through HDMI. The calibration menu will even detect if you have the polarity backwards when plugged into the speakers.
It took me a few extra days to go through the manual and figure out all the settings I wanted to mess with. Once that was done, I am super happy with this. The remote is much simpler to use, than my previous two Denon receivers.
The Zone 2 HDMI out works absolutely flawlessly. I've never used the Zone 2 feature on a stereo before, but this was a deciding factor when purchasing this unit. My wife and I do a lot of video game HDMI capturing on our PC. With so many HDMI inputs, this allows the Denon receiver to function as a stereo, HDMI switch, and HDMI Splitter all in one single to use unit. Also, with a press of just a few buttons, I can play my Xbox One X on my big screen, and my wife can play another console on our smaller TV while capturing on PC with no impact to each other at all. And when I want to capture the same HDMI source for streaming on Twitch or capturing on Youtube, I can simply set the main and zone 2 to output the same source.
My favorite new feature of this unit is ironically when the receiver is turned off. As long as the receiver is still plugged into the wall, it will still act as an HDMI pass-through to the TV, in case I am simply gaming with a headset at night time, and yes the sound still comes to the TV when using the receiver as a pass-through in this matter.
Now, on to the sound quality, 7.1 sounds absolutely amazing. I haven't tried out 7.2, 5.1.2, or any Dolby Atmos settings yet, cause I don't have the speakers to support this. But I use this primarily for gaming anyways, so that won't come until later. The Xbox One supports 7.1 with HDMI and it sounds flawless. A good way to test this is to play a First Person Shooter like Halo MCC, stand near an environment with a constant sound effect, like the waterfall on the map Ragnarok, and slowly spin your character in circles. Gaming headsets will never capture this level of surround authenticity any time soon.
Whenever I need to use 5.1 HDMI audio sources, like my Nintendo Switch or Xbox 360, I enable the "Dolby Surround" mode. This mode, according to the manual, " uses Dolby Surround Upmixer to extend various sources to natural and realistic multi channels for playback" and it sounds AMAZING. To test this out, I set my Xbox One to 5.1 audio out of the HDMI, enable Dolby Surround, and test it using the same method mentioned above on Halo MCC. I almost can not tell the difference between this and true 7.1.
So far, this has been the near perfect stereo. Thank you Try at My Life In Gaming for recommending this in your video. If you haven't checked out their youtube video's yet, give them a watch.
My only complaint is I need more inputs. I can never have enough. An extra component input would help with my set up. Also, nowadays, it is getting more difficult to find stereos with more than 2 SPDIF inputs, which is expected since they are being phased out. Also, I wish they still made stereos with Auxiliary inputs for all 7.1 channels that didn't cost more than $2 grand, since this makes it super convenient to plug my PC's sound card into. But at this point, it would be almost like wanting S-Video to make a comeback, and is not a dealbreaker. Especially since a good PC sound card will do a good job converting this to SPDIF anyways, as long as another major Windows revision doesn't screw this up again.
If you are looking for a new home stereo, buy this one! You will not be disappointed.
