I have been buying these sneakers for quite some time. I wear them to and from work and occasionally on the weekends to run to the store. This is the first year that I have noticed a dramatic drop in quality. I had only been using them for less than three months and the toe has already separated. I have a pair that’s over two years old that does have this issue. I’m very disappointed as these fit well and provide the support I am looking for, however if they are just going to fall apart with minimal use then im going to need to find a new brand / sneaker.

I wanted a sneaker with the following characteristics: wide sizes, extra coverage on the ankle, and leather. The Nike Air Monarch was good, but every person remarked that they were extremely ugly and uncool. These people were correct, but I need wide shoes. The Nikes looked like boats because they are only available in extra wide 4E. Wide sneakers look especially ugly in white or black shiny leather.

This New Balance sneaker was a much better looking alternative. They don't look so enormous because NB is available in wide 2E, which gave me plenty of width. I went with navy leather because dark colors tend to make things look smaller and don't look so dirty. The leather is matte and looks fine. Leather is tough & durable for rough usage, and mesh sneakers make my feet cold up here in the northeast. The leather is a bit stiff and could be more supple, but this is a fairly cheap sneaker and may need more usage to get broken in. Overall, the performance and comfort of this sneaker is good, but I have owned better AND much, much worse. This sneaker will not win any beauty contests. However, at least in navy leather, this sneaker looks decent and won't embarrass you. I can recommend this sneaker, especially when you consider the very limited selection of wide sneakers.

Some owners have complained that they are poorly made and fall apart quickly. I haven't owned them a long time, but I have done a bit of work in them. I don't notice any unusual signs of early deterioration. Most sneakers are cheaply and quickly made in Asia. It is highly likely that some defective lemons will be produced. Exchange them for a pair that is not defective. I am fairly certain that $160 Nikes are made in the same places.

Update: I still don't see any unusual signs of deterioration on these leather sneakers. It seems that most of the complaints come from people that bought the suede version.

Update 2: This sneaker is very comfortable and well-cushioned. It is holding up well under tough usage. I am changing the rating to five stars.

Wonderful walking shoe that features great comfort combined with tremendous durability. I bought 2 pairs, 1 white and 1 black and have been wearing them continuously for over a month as almost only shoes that I use. The results are stellar because they still look good with minimal wiping at night plus very little wear on soles of shoes compared to the Asics similar model that I bought 2 pairs before these that were pretty much worn out after 3 months. For me I am convinced that New Balanced is the way to go to get excellent fit, terrific durability and overall great performance in athletic shoes. I like the way the comparable Nike and Adidas shoes look, but my feet are wide. With them, I find that if I buy their wide size then heel area is too big and if I by the regular D width, the toe area is too narrow. Asics, New Balance, Puma and Reebok trainers all fit me fine in wide width size. but only New Balance seems to have figured out the proper shoe sole compound for comfort combined with extraordinary durability,

This is my third purchase of this black leather style of New Balance shoes. I work in an office building, so I need a black leather shoe, in a wide width, in the comfort of a sneaker/tennis shoe, and this shoe is the best of it's type for the price. My previous pairs (other models of this style by New Balance) lasted about a year each before breaking down. I expect these to last about the same, hopefully a few months longer. If your work environment is more demanding, such as a mechanic, I would not recommend these. The adhesive bonds of the sole and sides will break down sooner, but for an office worker, I would expect a minimum of a year. I do a bit more heavy work than the average office worker. For the price and wide width availability, I give 4 stars. If New Balance would make these more durable, to last longer, at the same price, I would give 4.5 stars.

To put this into a pros and cons list of why I am a repeat customer:

Pros:
They can pass as a uniform shoe / work shoe (black leather)
Provide the comfort of a sneaker/tennis shoe
Available in wide width.
Best shoe in this style for the price
Lightweight

Cons:
A bit small (I normally wear a 12, but always purchase these in 12.5, which is just right)
Not heavy duty quality (I work in an office environment, I would not recommend for a mechanic, contractor, etc.)

I love these cross-trainers. I have been wearing the 623's for years and for some reason never gave these a shot. I wear orthotics which the 623's were a good solid base for. I just got new and improved orthotics and the 623's weren't comfortable anymore. I need cross-trainers for I do heavy aerobics and then they can also be used for walking so I decided to give the 608's a try. I have fallen in love with these 608's. The style and design is great but the comfort is truly unbelievable. The fit is true to size and take my new orthotics perfectly and the whole combination then provides amazing support and comfort for my feet. I am wearing in the new orthotics so a few hours a day I wear the 608's by themselves and the padding in them is superb. They are so supportive, comfortable and honestly like walking on clouds. The 623's were always ok for my orthotics but I was never comfortable wearing them with their own insoles. I find the 608's far superior to the 623's and am beyond thrilled with everything about them. Comfort, support, look. Highly recommend.
