When Timothy Leary, the former Harvard professor and LSD guru, heard someone say:

"Women should set their sights on being equal to men."

Leary responded "Any woman who wants to be equal to men suffers from low ambition."

Great book for any women who is in the dating scene, and some excellent points if you are already married! I learned a lot about myself and my hidden expectations as well as my motives. I just ended a relationship that would have lead to disaster for both of us.This book verified my decision and kept me from trying to put it back together!! Although I didn't agree with everything that the writer says and the book is a little dated, I got so much out of it that it has changed my whole concept of what to look for in a relationship and why I have always made poor choices. You can't always blame the man, you chose him! The important point is to understand why you choose the relationships that you do so that you can choose someone who will be an asset to your life! You have to be willing to be honest with yourself and take responsibility for your motives, no matter how pure you think they are.

This book is an enduring treasure. You may find some language a bit outdated but the essential wisdom is solid. As a counselor, I hear the same gender-related issues as were prevalent 40 years ago, many of which come from the female tendency to let a relationship replace self development. Friedman clarifies how critical it is to be a full person in one's own right before committing to a significant other. I've recommended it to many mothers of daughters, several of whom said *they* benefitted even more than the daughter.

I had read this many years ago and bought it for a friend who needs to hear it is all right to be an independent woman and have a good relationship with a man. It was written several years ago, and is based on societal expectations of years past. It has some excellent pointers that still apply.

I have recommended this book many, many times to other women who have been in a bad pattern, choosing the wrong men. The author makes the reading understandable and helpful to see why we get in these patterns and how we can go anther path to find happiness. If I can do it any woman can!
