From the manufacturer

EF-S 18–55mm f/4–5.6 IS STM Lens

Compact and lightweight, the EF-S 18–55mm f/4–5.6 IS STM packs together legendary Canon optics, a versatile zoom range and quiet operation for power on the go. Its small size lets it fit just about anywhere, making it a great lens to bring with you on your everyday travels. The lead screw-type stepping motor (STM) helps ensure smooth autofocus and near-silent operation while advanced image stabilization can result in sharper photos with minimal blur, even in low light.

Features

Compact-size Lens

High performance in a small, lightweight package, the EF-S 18–55mm f/4–5.6 IS STM puts a versatile zoom range of 18–55mm into a compact, non-retracting body that’s easy to carry. Its optical system is designed to help ensure high image quality while keeping the lens compact and easily portable so it stays out of the way and is with you when you need it. Bring the EF-S 18–55mm f/4–5.6 IS STM and your camera with you in your daypack or camera bag so you can capture life’s adventures on a hike, vacation or in your own backyard.

Lead Screw-type STM

When it comes to recording video, you want to be sure you capture all the subtle sounds of what you’re recording. Thanks to its lead screw-type stepping motor (STM), the EF-S 18–55mm f/4–5.6 IS STM focuses smoothly and near-silently. There’s virtually no mechanical noise from the lens to distract from your movie – just the dialogue, music or other important sounds you want to capture.

Image Stabilization

For consistently sharp results, the EF-S 18–55mm f/4–5.6 IS STM features an improved Image Stabilizer system that provides enhanced shake reduction for up to 4 stops1 of shutter speeds. This means more reliable handheld performance and clearer detail in low-light situations, without having to increase the ISO or decrease the shutter speed. Because of its enhanced stabilization, the EF-S 18–55mm f/4–5.6 IS STM can also help minimize the need for a tripod.

Stylish Design

The innovative design of the EF-S 18–55mm f/4–5.6 IS STM combines style and usability. The exterior of the lens is textured with a black leather coating that allows for a precise grip that feels comfortable in your hand. The smooth-turning focus and zoom rings were designed for ease of use and accurate movement. A platinum ring behind the zoom ring adds a touch of sophistication, and the EF-S 18–55mm f/4–5.6 IS STM’s non-retracting design combined with its lightweight body makes it easy to carry with you wherever you go.

    Good compact lens
When I originally bought my Canon 70D I think I may have ben a little overzealous about telephoto capabilities. I bought the bundle with the 18-135mm and the 55-250mm lenses. A year so later I ended up getting a Tamron 18-300 lens so I could travel with one lens. I kept the 18-135 for special events that I knew wouldn’t need telephoto, as it was slightly sharper than the Tamron. The problem was that the Tamron made for a pretty big, heavy camera to just carry around. And even the Canon 18-135 made for a camera that was not only big to carry around but kind of imposing when I wanted grab some candid shots. This canon 18-55 was the perfect, budget answer. Especially since I bought it used on Amazon for under $100It’s much shorter and lighter than the 18-135 lens. So, it definitely accomplished the size goals I had. It’s surprising sharp for a kit lens. Sharp enough that if I ever missing those extra mm of tele-zoom I don’t see a 2x crop being an issue.Video shot with the lens was very crisp. This was important, as you can always do some sharpening of your photos post-production. Sharpening video is not as easy. The Stepper Motor focusing was silent in the videos.I have a Canon Nifty-Fifty for shooting portraits when I want nice bokeh. This lens provided decent (but not great) bokeh in the f/4-f/5 range. The pic included with the review is f/9. I wish I had shot with a lower f-stop for more artistic effect, but it this point I was still playing around with the lens to see how it behaved at various settings. At full retail I probably wouldn’t love this lens as much but for under $100 it’s a great addition to my gadget bag
