Warm cleans, crunch channel that gives the perfect (to my ears) British flavored crunch with a very raw low midrange quality (sort of my dream 60s-early 80s tone - tight singing sustain, midrangy with out sounding quacky or fizzy. Think Led Zeppelin II or Black Sabbath early 70s). Active EQ is a strange beast but you will never have a channel that is "too bright no matter what the EQ" or "too dark no matter what the EQ." This is not an amp where you fight the EQ and discover that if u want more treble, you have to back off the mids, etc. Lead channel has a great modern metal tone to it. Both channels are very very tight and dry sounding in the low end, with a mid range honk (unless you scoop the mids a bit). Its hard to find British and tight, but this amp has it. Great, very present low end even at low volumes, but never boomy. My other amps are boomy, this one is tight and has depth.
The master volume works great on this amp, has a very slow increase in volume so you can get it just right. I can get lower volume and better low volume tones out of this even into a 4x12 than I can through a 5 watt amp. I've recorded songs using it and noise-isolating headphones, only to realize the actual volume of the amp didn't make much difference on the tone and at TV volume it sounded better than any other amp I have.
Most tube amp volume controls go from too quiet to too loud with only a hair touch. This is one reason I chose the 333(xl) over a 6262 / 6260 because they lack a master volume (channel volumes alone on most amps are too sensitive to gain settings and can blow your ears out if you get noise or feedback in the effects loop. With a master volume that is post-fx, you don't have that issue)
Foot switch is the best I've had, much better feel to it than the usual "stomp" ones and I like the options.
The channels are labeled clean, crunch, and lead, but you could just as well use the lead channel for tight rhythm and the crunch for singing midrangy lead runs. The clean channel overdrives easily (does not stay clean) unless you use the low gain input or keep the channel volume low.
From my perspective, Crunch = JCM800 / plexi style sound, very tight, bright, from Led Zep to Scorpions. Lead = Modern metal, has a warmer midrange that you can boost for death / Scandinavian metal tone or scoop a bit for that nu-metal sound. If you lower the gain on the Lead channel, its actually kinda like a browned out plexi. Overall it's not as gritty as a 5150 / 6260, but for me, I need the harder edged Marshall style sound as much as I need the modern metal sound.
XL switches make things thicker. I like the XL on for the Lead channel; for the Crunch, it really depends on how thick a tone I need. Crunch + XL = kinda Black Sabbath tone. Without the XL, the crunch channel sounds more vintage, more harsh. You can turn the reverb on for one channel and leave it off for others, and the amp will remember your preference (until power down the amp). That means you can drench your cleans in reverb and get a nice dry metal distortion without tapping more switches.
The amp covering is really nice and construction is solid. Hoping the stock power tubes are decent. Seems like most issues with Bugera amps post-2009 come down to bad power tubes causing blown fuses.
Cons : After a while, you realize that some of the badging and the knobs are made of plastic made to look metal. Detracts a bit from the cool factor. Pots themselves have a very sturdy feel to them, move very slowly. The noise gate doesn't really do anything (and my guitar does pick up noise with any amp because of having a PC nearby). The cleans might lack "character" but make up for that by being warm and take pedals VERY well. The impedance selector switch appears to be cheap plastic and I'm afraid one day it will simply stop working. The OD channels each have a mid honk and sound a bit different even at same gain settings. The honk is a little worse on the lead channel if the mids are at noon or higher. You can also get a great kinda brown sound by setting the lead gain to about 1 or so. As I said, it's a very versatile amp and you can set it up any way you want it.
Also, it doesn't really do the whole "fizzy, bright, totally undefined Marshall tone" very well, but I find that easy to get from a pedal, and hard to dial out in other amps that are nothing but fizz, mud, etc. This amp is articulate.
Okay, great price. Huge, powerful, great looking Bling Thing. Makes great sound, tone, and is quite versatile. At first I had issues with mine, as the tube were not properly seated. I put in for a return/refund. Then after re-seating the tubes, this thing is literally better than any 1000$ head out there today. My biggest concern at this point, is will it last for more than a few weeks? For now, I'm holding off on my return. I'll give it another 3 weeks, play through it gently and get a feel for the durability of the components. Bottom line, if this amp is one of the good ones, this is the deal of the century. The foot switch is very nice, and built to last. The amp is quite capable, but as I've read over and over, QC on these seems to come into question at times. I'm hoping I got a good one and she lasts. This baby runs super hot, so be sure to give her plenty of breathing space. The features included make this amp very desirable. With the Master Volume, I can play at in home levels and still enjoy the great sounds this is capable of making. My guitars sing real pretty through my 2x12 V30 CAB. Time will tell on durability. If they fail, it's usually pretty quickly. Wish me luck.
