The History of John Boos & Co

In 1887, Effingham, Illinois blacksmith Conrad Boos used a Sycamore tree placed on three legs while hammering horseshoes. Three years later, a local butcher realized a wooden Boos Block could be used for cutting meat, and had one custom made. By 1911, John Boos & Co was shipping custom butcher blocks from coast to coast. Throughout the 20’s to 40’s, John Boos expanded and added tables and workbenches to their product range, the majority of which went to the war effort during WWII. By the 1940s, John Boos had earned their outstanding reputation for quality and craftsmanship, and their butcher blocks were found in every restaurant, food store and butcher shop in America. Today, the traditional craftsmen work ethic is still alive and well at John Boos, where all boards and butcher blocks are still proudly manufactured in Effingham, Illinois. Often imitated, John Boos boards and blocks are favorites of professional chefs and can be found in restaurants and commercial settings worldwide.

Committed to Environmental Integrity

John Boos’ Hardwood foresters follow professional best practices that mirror natural forces. Individual trees are selected for harvest, encouraging forests to renew and regenerate themselves naturally and prolifically. John Boos & Co. recycles 95% of all raw lumber scraps and sawdust which are used to generate electricity and create steam to fuel the boilers. John Boos sawdust is also recycled as livestock bedding for local agricultural needs.

Care and Maintenance

Keeping Your Board Sanitized:

Wash your John Boos cutting board with hot soapy water after each use and dry with a clean towel or let it air dry. For further sanitation, the board can be rinsed with a vinegar or chlorine bleach solution. (1 teaspoon bleach to one quart of water/5-to-1 ratio of vinegar to water) Do not soak the board in water, this will damage the wood. Like all natural wood cutting boards, John Boos boards are not intended for the dishwasher.

Maintaining Your Board:

Oil your cutting board on all surfaces every 3-4 weeks to maintain the original Boos block cream finish with beeswax. This quick task will protect and prolong the board’s life and ensure it is enjoyed for decades to come. John Boos recommends using John Boos Mystery Oil and/or John Boos Block Cream. (Sold separately on Amazon.)

Product Description

Bring home a culinary classic with a RA Board by John Boos. RA Boards are thick and hearty boards and measures an impressive 2.25 inches thick. Each RA board features sleek edge grain construction, resulting in a modern linear grain pattern.

John Boos products are designed to meet the demanding expectations of commercial kitchens, and exceed the highest level of quality and food safety standards. Each board and block is made from sustainably harvested North American hardwoods, and offers a commercial grade cutting surface that protects the sharp edge on fine cutlery. Often imitated, John Boos and Co. is internationally known for its expertise in crafting American hardwoods into products of beauty, durability and function.

Simple board care can ensure this heirloom, handcrafted board is a favorite in your kitchen for years to come. Every John Boos Board and Block comes with a food safe natural oil finish that helps protect the wood during transit. Once a month, apply an even coat of NSF Approved John Boos Mystery Oil (sold separately), and allow it to soak in overnight. Repeat this process more often when the board is brand new and “thirsty,” or if you live in a dry, arid climate. John Boos recommends applying John Boos Board Cream (also sold separately) to seal the top of the wood surface after applying the Mystery Oil. A few quick minutes of regular oil application will ensure your new board is properly seasoned, and ready for work! After use, wash board with warm, soapy water (all wooden cutting boards are not dishwasher safe and should not be soaked in water).

Since 1887, every genuine John Boos cutting board and butcher block has been proudly made in Effingham, Illinois by skilled craftspeople using time honored techniques. Today, USA made John Boos cutting boards and butcher blocks are used and loved in commercial and home kitchens worldwide.

Great product, but potential shipping damage

Great product, but potential shipping damage
Great product. It's large, strong, and beautiful. Make sure you have a large sink, otherwise it will be difficult to clean. My only gripe is that it came with an obvious dent in the wood corner. Right next to the Boos Logo. Of all 8 corners it had to be that corner! Ahhh. They really need to ship these things with corner covers. It's pretty heavy, so I'm sure it was dropped on that corner during shipping. It's disappointing since I spent a lot of money for it. At least I'm satisfied with every thing else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Execelent board once it stopped growing.
Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2015
I placed my order, and as usual, it arrived right on time. When I opened the box, I was first shocked to see how big it was. I guess I under estimated or under realized the dimensions. Anyhow, when I unwrapped it, I noticed something that another review had stated, and that was the fact that the finish was less than to be desired. It was rough, and felt unfinished, and was very pale in color. Well, I took my Boos Oil and Boos cream and proceeded to give it a treatment. I then put it away and waited anxiously for an opportunity to use it. That day came on Saturday, and I fell in love with it! Good Solid cutting board, plenty of room to work, and pile my chopped veggies to the top and sides of my working area. I then washed it with soapy water, after I figured out it would only fit in one side of my double sink, standing on end, and set it aside to dry before putting it away. That's when I noticed that it seemed to fit tighter in the space where I had stored it at before, which was standing on it's side, on top of my counter, and under the upper cabinets. The next time I used it, it was almost impossible to get out, and was impossible to put back into that space. It had grown approximately 1/4 inch in width, and now no longer fits under the cabinet. Well being the handyman that I am, I took it out to my shop, and put it on my table saw, and trimmed off about 1/2 inch. Then while sanding the newly cut edge, I decided to sand all sides smooth. I then brought it back in and re treated it with the Boos Oil. Today the board has a silky smooth surface, and is a dark maple color. It's almost as if it wouldn't absorb the Boos Oil in the condition it came form the factory in. Once I sanded it down, it absorbed like a sponge. You can see in the picture the color difference from the piece I cut off and the board now.
