With the structure of a multi-arc comic book run, Gravity Rush 2 successfully tells the adventures of its heroine in a fun, open world superhero game.
The game stars Kat, an amnesic young woman with the ability to “shift” gravity. She’s able to traverse floating cities by soaring through the skies. At the start of the game, Kat finds herself powerless in an unfamiliar settlement. This starting premise is a great way for newcomers to be introduced to Kat and ease into the game’s mechanics. Although it acts as a typical tutorial, it’s well executed and doesn’t take long to complete.
Being able to shift gravity gives Kat a variety of options in combat. She has a ground combo attack effective against basic enemies. Her main attack is the gravity kick, which is assisted by a soft lock-on system. This works well for most of the game, but does become difficult to aim as more enemies pop-up later in the game. Kat’s stasis field is a cool ability; she’s able to grab objects around her and toss them at will. It’s easy to accidentally pick up people and plummet them to their deaths. The gravity slide shows up sparingly in the game; it’s pretty fun to use, but the camera can be a little too sensitive at times. The sequel fixes Kat’s special attack by having it fill up as you defeat enemies. In the previous game, it was possible to hide or even just wait for it to refill. The most important gameplay aspect in this type of game is the camera. I’m glad to say it performs admirably with only a few hiccups. It doesn’t work well with some confined spaces and one particular boss battle, but those were partly due to level design.
Those who found the combat system monotonous in the first Gravity Rush might want to reconsider. Two new styles are introduced in this game: Lunar and Jupiter. Once acquired, Kat can switch from either style at the swipe of the touchpad. In the Lunar style, Kat becomes light as a feather allowing her to glide across surfaces and leap buildings in a single bound. This modifies her combat by weakening her attacks, but adding noticeable speed and an automatic lock-on system. In the Jupiter style, she becomes a walking boulder adding much needed power. Kat is able to charge her gravity kick, which can completely demolish large groups of enemies. During certain parts of the game, Kat’s powers are restricted and you’re forced to play with a particular style. This helped to keep the gameplay fresh, but I can see it being unappealing to those of you who want complete freedom of Kat’s abilities at all times.
Boss battles in this game vary from good to slightly annoying. Kat faces a variety of enemies in all shapes and sizes. The bigger the bosses were, the more obtuse the fights felt. Some battles were more straightforward, and others required figuring out the “trick” in order to win. Especially in the latter half of the game, many boss battles were interrupted by short cutscenes. I felt like it was done so often that it made some boss battles feel disjointed and anticlimactic because I expected it every time.
One of the best aspects about this game is its style. Its comic book inspired cutscenes are a great way to convey its story and characters. Not all games need cinema-quality motion captured cutscenes to feel like they have a high production value. Characters generally have softer features that are more in line with Studio Ghibli’s art style. This gives the game a slightly wider appeal for those who don’t particularly like the look of traditional anime. The world itself has personality; each district has its own feel with plenty of NPC’s to populate them. In reference to other games, I can see Jet Set Radio for the cell-shaded graphics and Skies of Arcadia for the floating cities.
Characters are designed beautifully. Kat feels unique with the combination of her red eyes, tan skin, and pale blonde hair. Her main outfit heavily reminds me of Xena: The Warrior Princess, which I idolized as a child. Past characters return along with many newcomers. They fit traditional molds and archetypes with little surprises, but I found them charming nonetheless.
The menus have a nice flair and simplicity to them. Everything was clear and easy to find. Maps are color coordinated: story missions are red, side missions are blue, conversations are yellow, and so on. Just click, and your marker is set to go. Kat’s power ups are bought with red gems littered throughout the game. The upgrade system only has one path for each category, which was actually refreshing. You’ll have to spend an excessive amount of time exploring areas – above and below – to collect these gems. Talismans are a nice introduction that I admittedly didn’t spend too much time with. They improve stats, attacks, and other various upgrades. Later in the game, they can be combined to create more powerful talismans.
Side missions helped me connect to the world and see personality in its citizens. There’s a mix of tasks to do such as fighting Nevi, stealth missions, finding locations via photog raphs, and more. Photographs were definitely a surprising part of the game. It’s heavily integrated into the online features and quite a few story and side missions. Players can take photographs and upload them online creating side missions. One particular online side mission tasked me with finding a chest with my only clue being a photograph taken by another player. It took me way longer than I expected to be able to find that chest, but it was nice distraction that promoted me to explore for gems. Along the way, I ended up finding a small glitch that allowed me to fall into a building.
Perhaps the most annoying thing about this game is its save system. There were a few times where I consciously explored to collect gems for upgrades only to find that it wasn’t saved even after I manually saved to a new file. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seemed like the game only really ever saves once missions are completed.
If you went into this game wanting to learn more about Kat’s backstory like I did, you’ll be glad to hear your questions will be answered. It’s a satisfying part of the game that’s completely different from the rest.
There’s something about this game that I keep wanting to go back to. The characters have great designs, the world is vast and filled with a sense of wonder, and the story fully fleshes out its main character in her own secret origin. A few stumbles with boss battles and level design choices don’t stop this game from being a great experience that more people should try.
This game is just like it but a lot better. The issues the game has are very small.
I'll just start with the cons.
The camera is still bad when you do the gravity slide. That said I don't find myself using gravity slide much except for challenge missions that require it.
The other is I'd like to see a little bit more unique looking NPCs that give you side quests.
That's it for the cons.
The pros.
The world is very very big. There is a lot of surface to explore. I say surface because everything in this game is potential ground, walls ceilings, anything and everything you could put your feet on. Because of this there are a lot of little things to find for those that like that sort of thing.
From people, art, to hidden treasures. That'll keep you busy for a long while assuming you don't just look it up. What is neat about the treasures is that there are ghosts left behind when others find the treasure. You might see one just standing like on the side of the street. You go up to it and you'll get a hint. The person takes a photo to give you a clue as to where it is. Believe me this is great because holy moly I couldn't imagine how long I'd be looking for everything without some hints time to time from other players. After you find a treasure, you yourself take a picture to try and give the best hint to where it may be by using landmarks and such.
If someone finds it you get some Points that will unlock Skins,Talismans, and items.
Flying around with gravity is as amazing as ever. It really makes you thin in a whole new way because your traversal is no longer limited to horizontal surfaces. With the addition of Lunar and Jupiter styles it is more fun now. Personally I looooove the lunar style. Its so fun
The story mode in this game is very long. Make sure you do all the missions for you don't miss anything, because there is a lot of story. You'll know for a fact you are done with the Main story line when you see the 2nd set of credits. That is all I will say about the story. It was very good.
The new areas are really distinct and have their own feel. things are a lot more vertical now than they were before. There are some new and interesting enemies. I think the mines are a very interesting edition, especially the deluvian mines which give you some extra end game fun, The new characters are pretty likable overall. Language isn't an issue at all since they all speak a made up language. The music in this game is fantastic. There is 1 song in particular that is really good and is the only one with lyrics.
There are some cool power ups in the form of talismans you can get which make a pretty big impact on how you play and how effectively you can do different things.
Like I want to keep going on all the positives but I don't want this to be too long or possibly spoil anything. Anyways this a definite must buy, Both Gravity Rush Remastered and Gravity Rush 2.
