The difficulty has been lessened to a degree also. In the original getting an excellent attack could be quite difficult due to the narrow window of opportunity, such as with the hammer or with some bros attacks, but in this version that window was expanded -slightly- making it possible to routinely get excellent attacks, but it's not so long that it's button mashing easy, although there is an "easy mode" in the options menu. This also affects Bowser's minion attacks, making it much easier to, for example, launch every Goomba and hit gold ranking in the massage parlor.
The annoyance factors are still there as well. Battles with Mario & Luigi will still take an annoyingly long time due to the low damage dealt outside of Bros Attacks, yet easily avoided enemy attacks. Boss battles still take ages. Enemy health is not visible, which adds to the feeling that boss battles will never end. Some of he bros attacks, such as the bouncer, still seem to be overly complicated and included just to have another special attack. Things like this work themselves out in the later part of the game when star and shine ranks are hit for the better gear and the better bros attacks are obtained, but it makes the first half of the game really drag. The Energy Hold stage, for instance. Speaking of leveling, a new feature to this version is that when you rank up, you get to choose a bonus effect that will affect them from then on, such as an additional +1 power or increased healing from items.
Sadly they did not include a temporary checkpoint feature in this version either, a system where a temporary save point is created so the system can be shut down or game switched which is restored then deleted when the game is launched again. Save points are still plentiful, but some of them have longer stretches between them.
Bowser Jr's Journey is a welcome addition as well, akin to the Bowser's Minions in the Superstar Saga remake. I won't delve deeply into it as to limit spoilers, but I will say that, like Bowser's Minions, it leaves you disappointed, feeling more like a minigame tacked on, which it essentially is, instead of a full companion game.
All in all it's a worthy purchase even if you own the original. I wish there were more new content, such as new minigames and expanded quests, but that is limited to just Amiibo scanning.
