This friction mount is great. True, it has a fairly cumbersome footprint, but it is flexible and can be scooched into corners in a way that the last friction mount couldn't be. As a result, I am able to see all of the displays on my dashboard and the Nuvi sits sturdily in its place. This mount is flatter than the last one which also makes a huge difference to my mind. The other one was a bit more of a modified sandbag. This is just a flattish piece of what appears to be rubber. It is counterweighted by being long and wider in front so your Nuvi wont do a header into your dash. It also can adjust up or down by about an inch or more. Everything on it works great and the nuvi is now in place and easy to read.
BOTTOM LINE: for my need this is the perfect solution for mounting the Nuvi. I am once again saying goodbye to the suction window mount.
This works fantastic with my new Garmin that I purchased from Costco. The window mounts never really seem to work for me and they especially don't work for me in the Florida heat and humidity. I also don't like having it in my window because it gives potential thieves a good indication that I have a navigation hidden in my car somewhere.
But this, I love! It works fantastic with my Garmin and I even take this with me on travel. It is light weight and folds nicely. I also take it out of my window an put it on the floor of my passenger seat when I am parked somewhere so that people can't see it sitting in my car window.
The stickiness of the base is great. I never slides around on my dash board and I an conform it to fit in pretty much any shape. It has been in many rental cars and I have never had any issues. My car's dash is kind of flat/round inclined, which is just enough for these types of things to want to go flying when I make a big turn. Not this one, it has pretty much never had any issues. I also like that it is light weight so I can just stick it in my carry on bag and not think anything of it. The sand ones are much to heavy to want to travel with.
I definitely recommend this product and it is a great gift for those that use navigations. I bought one for my mom and she loves it as well.
I have an Audi TT (2001) which has a rather curved dashboard in the area where I and probably most people would want to put this. At first I didn't think that it was going to make enough contact to avoid slipping, but it actually works! You can't tell from the product photo, but the base is more flexible than it looks and holds its shape after you bend it. So, you can shape it around rounded humps on your dashboard as long as they aren't too severe. This is even with the near-freezing temperatures we have around here right now.
Also not obvious from the photos, the bottom of the base is perfectly smooth and looks sticky until you actually touch it. Then you find that it's like some sort of polished-smooth malleable silicone rubber type stuff that somehow won't slide against anything, even without any sticky/tacky stuff on it. It's almost like it's sticky without being sticky. (No adhesive junk to come lose on your dashboard.) It's just putty soft and smooth surfaced enough that it has tremendous friction, sort of like a super soft racing tire surface on steroids.
I was trying to decide between this mount and the beanbag version , and I seem to have made the right choice for my situation in buying this one. The feeling I got is that this one is better if you're not going to move the mount between vehicles (that is, treat it as though it was just permanently attached even though it isn't). The beanbag is probably better if you want to move it between vehicles all the time. This rubbery one blends in with my dashboard better, but I'm guessing that if I moved it around all the time the almost-sticky bottom would pick up dust and I'd end up having to rinse it off periodically. I haven't seen the bottom surface of the beanbag, but I'm guessing it depends more on weight and typical high friction rubber than slick super-high-friction silicone type stuff.
I looked up the weight of both this mount and the beanbag version, and I think the beanbag was like 2 lbs and this one is 1.6 lbs or something. So the beanbag might be better to offset the weight of heavier GPS units. I don't know how heavy they get, but my GPS is only 5oz or something at most, so I thought 1.6lbs would be sufficient weight and it seems that I was right.
Since I have a sports car, I can conceivably pull some serious Gs. I can't say I've really maxed out the lateral acceleration of my car with this mount on the dash (it's winter here, ice, wet roads, etc.) but it seriously doesn't show any signs of going anywhere. This is with my typical faster-than-most-people speeds when taking 90 degree turns. Just the weight of the thing plus the ridiculously high-friction bottom seems to be more than enough to hold it in place even if the whole bottom isn't completely in contact with the dash.
I kind of wish it would lay flatter against the weird excessively rounded part of my dashboard where I want to put it, and it would be nice if the base would swivel or something (though that might put it off balance), but there's no doubt that it works. Much better than a suction cup, or anything bolted/adhered to the dash that likely couldn't be removed without damage. I wish I had gotten one of these a LONG time ago.
