After putting 172 hours into this game, I was randomly banned today. I did NOT do anything wrong. No cheating or anything else that violates their ToS.
They will not tell me why I was banned and they say that all bans are final and there is no appeal possible for them. I tried to appeal it anyhow and wasted another 2 hours with support who just robotically repeated "We would like to let you know that there is no option to lift the banned as all the ban in the account are final."
Buyer beware.

OK, first things first, Dear Viewers, some people don`t like it when drm or installing procedeures are mentioned. I believe that every reviewer has a duty to review ALL aspects concerning a game if he can, this includes any troublesome (or easy) aspects of installing and DRMs. Scroll to after the asterix line if you want the main review.
The package.
Well as some have said, you get a nice, if you order a physical game , you get a nice well put together pack. There`s a huge double-sided map of the city you`re in showing a lot of detail, a wafer thin install manual (that`s all it is). I also got a `pre-order` bonus leaflet that gave added cash and stuff... er, I never preordered, but I`ll keep it it, thanks.
On install, this game appeared to be Steamed (it came up with the Steam logo), but it installed without. Weird, but I don`t like Steam, so I was pleased. however, you have to be online with the Rockstar Social Group and the game is your forever (this never happened with GTAIV), so it`s like a mini version of Steam and is a DRM.
7, yes, SEVEN discs comes in the pack. Be prepared to spend at least up to TWO hours installing. Then goes online where you have to sign up to the Rockstar social club. then it installs another 6 (SIX) gig! This took TWO HOURS and I have fast net. It must be their servers. You cannot play without this. I started at around 4pm and the game was not ready till after 8pm. This must be the longest installation in the history of gaming!
However, I had prepared my PC and myself before hand, defragging and cleaning up my files, uninstalling crap I didn`t need, so it was relatively painless. I just did my artwork during the wait. Thanks to the previous reviewers who warned of this wait. :)
By the way, I was little concerned about some of the clauses it wants you to accept (I didn`t bother reading the back until I was well into downloading the 60 gig) and it concerned me when it mentioned `periodic entitlement verification`, I doubt I would have bought the game had i known that from the start. I have not seen this `periodic entitlement verification`in action yet, but it is a worry as I play almost exclusively Offline. The game loses half a star for this crap, normally, it would be one, but I`ll explain later. Just be aware.

THE GAME.....
You start off during a bank heist... I won`t say any more, but it`s pretty cool the way it drags you in there. It`s a little like Heat, the movie and it doesn`t spare the swearing or the killing when the cops descend on you.
Just before it got going I hit `esc` to get into the Options and you are greeted with a raft of them. I love lots of options and it is all here. I was able to set my game up almost exactly as I like it. I had everything set for 1st person view mouse and keyboard and it worked perfectly. The only thing I haven`t been able to do is set up my controller for car driving, there doesn`t seem to be a custome mode for that, so i just stuck all that on the keyboard. It worked perfectly- the buttons have been very well thought out so you can use the same buttons for different modes without confusion. Well, done Rockstar!
I had a big smile on my face as I went through the intro in First Person. I have always wanted this in a GTA game and at last it was here. My only gripe is that sometimes you are thrown into 3rd for some quick scenes and weapon ironsights are not TRUE. You don`t look right down the sights in aim. I don`t know what its like for sniper rifles, but I`ll bet you do get to look down the sites for those as you did in previous games.
The game then introduces you through the three main characters until you finally settle on the black guy. You are introduced to more controls and options to set you. Then you can start swapping between guys.
For now though I`m just on the black guy and have completed a few simple missions ranging from vehicke pickups to upsetting gang members.
Graphics are extremely good and I almost maxed everything and still had smooth gameplay.
I am somewhat awed by the technical feat of this game. You can simply grab a car or walk and just explore the city- And there`s a LOT of city to explore. It is really a simulation of reality, I have to say. Pretty much everything is there:
People, cars, aircraft, animals, the whole thing moves and works together so realistically. Except children, there are no children. I suppose the only way to express how expansive this game is, is by an example:
I took a car from the garage and decided to just have a drive around, listening to a track on the many radio stations. People of all types were walking, some on mobiles, others drunk, people doing their own thing. Driving among cars in 1st person is so much like the real thing. Obviously the car controls are simplified, but the rest is so `there`. Vehicles act like you`d expect. I sidled next to a car at a red light and looked (using mouse look-great!) and saw a pretty lady in it, she was bobbing her head to some music.
A man crosses the road a bit late and gets hooted at by a cement-mixer truck driver. the man panics, drops his ice cream and runs to the other side. We all drive on. There hundreds of little details like this.
I drove into a new area I didn`t know, certain people started looking at me. Some sounded downright angry at me. Why? I`m just driving. Then I realised I was black, and these guys were Hispanic? And they didn`t like me in their neighbourhood. I`m English, so I`m not sure, but it was such an amazing amout of realism- as well as sad to see. I didn`t get out. I drove on.
It`s getting dark, someone shouts! Their bike has been stolen. The game tells me that random stuff like this will happen and its up to me if I do anything. I chased after the cyclist thief in my car and knocked him over! he said "F**K this!" and ran off. I got the bike and brought it back to the owner, who was happy to get it. He never paid me anything though.
This is just a tiny bit to the depth of this game, I`ve been to stripper dance joints, gun shops, hair shops and watched a completely random non-scripted dynamic gun shoot out between cops and a driver who crashed into a wall. There`s also a heluva lot of satirical content regarding society, even one satirising `The Cloud` which I hate because it is not privacy and the game seems to recognise that. Maybe I`m the person being satired! LOL.
I have been at this game for about 5 hours and barely scratched the surface and totally offline (physically disconnected from the net). It`s an astonishingly ambitious and huge game and it works so far.
Issues?
Microtransactions: the game will sometimes try to get you to pay cash for extra stuff online. I`ve ignored it. It seems to happen only in shops so far, so i treat it like reality and just don`t buy. Hate microtransactions. This kind of thing and the DRM means it loses a whole Star altogether. *Edit: Well it did, but it has made up for it by its excellence in gameplay, so i`ve changed my rating.
Very brilliant game, an incredible work by who knows how many programmers. There are like a dozen game modes done better than many games that do almost ONE of these things well.
Pity about the DRMs and the `periodic Entitlement verification`, and micro transactions otherwise it would have all 5. I might update later if this is not as bad as it sounds. Apart from that, I would actually recommend this game. just make sure you have a decent internet connection for the install and give yourself the best part of a day before even playing it.
P.S Before I said the weapons in the game had no true ironsights. I was wrong, it does. All weapons have proven look along the barrel view. EXCELLENT!
P.P.S
I have played this game solidly over the weekend and you know what? I`m giving it 5 Stars. Not only is this an amazing sandbox game, but the story and characters and the whole way this thing works is very impressive.
There are dozens of things you can do like hunting, playing darts, helping people or not, customise with clothing and hairstyles (although they are bit low for some characters). There are dozens of things and places to find. Plus that you can have proper ironsights after all on weapons. It`s also a pretty bold Man`s game which I like a lot, few are brave enough to be so these days, apart from the Witcher. Respect.
Also, I am still amazed at how it all flows and works seamlessly. It`s not just about the graphics, but the Technical genius behind it. Yes, I said genius, a word I almost never use for anyone.
Despite my concerns about the DRM (which have not troubled me while I`ve been Oflline), I am ridiculously impressed. 5 STARS.
You can play this in "story" mode like a normal single user video game or "online" mode with loads of other people from round the world.
In story mode you play three different characters and there is a plot that weaves the characters together through a set of missions. The plot has more to it than most films and the relationship between the characters develops through the game, all of which was a big part of my enjoyment.
The mechanics of the game are also excellent. It plays smoothly either in 3rd person mode (you look down on your character) or 1st person mode (you see through the eyes of your character), the level of detail is incredible, driving is fun with different vehicles behaving differently, and combat is fun, varying between easy and difficult (for me at least) at points in the game. There's also quite a lot of humour in the game, not least on the radio that you listen to when driving.
Aside from the main missions in story mode there are plenty of side missions and you can go off exploring, doing hobbies or killing and robbing people (if that's your thing) outside of missions. Missions can feel quite intense because of combat or sometimes time pressure, but you generally enter missions at your own pace and take as much time as you like to do other stuff in between.
Now for the tricky moral issues that nearly put me off trying this game. The good news is that you don't have to visit hookers let alone kill them to complete the game. The bad news is that there is no avoiding the infamous torture scene if you want to get through the game. I have to say I found that section of the game rather uncomfortable but thankfully it was short lived. Of course you have to accept that you are going to steal lots of cars and kill lots of people, most of whom will be innocent guards, police etc.
I can only comment briefly regarding the online mode as I have only tried it a few times. There is no overall story line here. You choose your missions and you often work with others to complete them. I dare say you get used to it, but the signing up to missions all seems a bit clunky to me. The players also lack the character that is put into story mode. I will try online more and it is clearly very popular and for some will be the main thing they like in GTA V, but for now I regard it as an add on to the main story line game. I guess it would be most fun if you have real life friends playing it with you.
I found it easy to get the game to work. I already had a PC with a heavyweight CPU. I bought a £100 RX560 graphics card to go in it and one of these cheap game controllers https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00NP4GT6C/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_2. You can play through a keyboard but the game controller worked well for me. There are several DVDs to load and it takes a while to install the game but that is largely a reflection of the scale and detail of the game.. No problem with conflicts with my firewall or virus scanner. You must sign up to the Grand Theft Auto social club to play even in story mode but this is not a problem - they don't bombard you with junk mail. Updates to the game are delivered once you join the social club. And then you are ready to go (and you never need to visit the social club again if you don't want to). Worked first time for me and the default settings were near enough perfect.
I rate this along side my favourite books, films, music etc as simply wonderful entertainment.
Initial loading: 90 mins plus of loading the seven install dvds - fair enough I thought. Then, over a day and a half, yes, a day and a half [at around 200kb/sec] of updates to finish off loading the game. [and no, it wasn't re-loading the whole thing] Bonkers.
Off-line play: You can play this off-line but only when it lets you. You have to sign in on-line from time to time or it won't let you play until you do. Other times, it loads up and plays in off-line mode with no problems. There is no way of knowing when that is going to be the case so be prepared for any time you fancy a blast for an hour or so, you may have to go on line and download hours of updates [who knows why or what it's actually "updating" but it happens every month or so]. Only then can you play.
Sometimes it randomly won't allow you to play until you simply go on line and sign in, with no apparent updating taking place. All the time I'm opting for "off-line mode."
Is this really the future direction of pc gaming?
Yes, this game looks great and probably is good to play too if you're going to live your life on it but if you just want to dip into this for a laugh every now and again, it really is too much of a pain in the a*@$ and as such, a real turn-off.
Very glad I only spent £20 on it!
Their multiplayer is ok, it works fine for me but one thing to note is that the fixing of issues is a slow process. If publicity is raised regarding an issue, they will generally try to fix it. However, their updates generally make the game worse. One thing that I find funny is R* have banned anybody who has anything to do with FiveM and this is a real signal that Rockstar are fearful of what FiveM has to offer.
I am definitely going to be playing on FiveM in the future. GTA Online is in a sorry state and a proper moderated online with fair features is something I definitely look forward to.
The game in single player is amazing. In multiplayer, it's ok. It's earning 3*. They put a lot of hard work in to it and it was worth the wait through all of those delays but at the end of the day, the game is slowly dying. Single player needs expansion and multiplayer needs sorting out. Otherwise, PC gamers are going to come up with their own ways of playing the game which don't include rockstar. (FiveM)
I take this opportunity to note the 1 and 2 star reviews already here… guys and gals, use a bit of common sense here - this isn't the first AAA game to suffer day 1 download delays and server problems- Assassins Creed anyone? This, unfortunately for now, is to be expected as games are bigger and PC hardware is more varied and in effect dated from one week to the next as tech moves on so quickly both at the user and developer ends. Give it a few days to settle and Rockstar will have it sorted. Think about it, 100s of thousands of people all over the world got this game yesterday, bottlenecking on the servers was inevitable. Also, the people moaning about not being able to load the game up once it had installed on their £3.5k rigs- again, common sense here - check all your drivers are up to date. Both AMD and NVidia released GTA V PC beta drivers yesterday. This was announced on their websites and social media and retweeted by Rockstar. And Rockstar support had a list of known issues and fixes up from hour 1. If you own a high end PC so you can lord it over console users that we can play 60fps games at 4k, you should know about this and accept its not always going to be as easy as putting a disc in and playing instantly. And lastly, no, it is not on Steam/Steam servers; it clearly says this on the product description on Amazon, on Steam's site and Rockstar's site. Don't kick off if you haven't bothered reading/researching before buying.
Anyway, rant over, my rig is as follows:
Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon) cooled by Corsair Hydro H110
Gigabyte Z97X-SOC Force Motherboard
TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 16GB 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit
Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Vapor-X 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card ~ with the GTA V 15.4 drivers loaded…
Samsung 500GB SSD
Windows 8.1 64-Bit
XBone controller
(Around £1.3k bought last summer for those who are curious and looking to upgrade)
There are two separate screens for changing the graphics settings. I've got all settings on high and ultra with the exception of MSAA which is off and running at a 4k resolution. Rockstar have implemented the same graphics card RAM usage bar as they did for GTA 4 on the PC, which is brilliant for choosing what will give you the best settings while keeping your card in the green. (Other developers should take note of this, it’s a great assistance when setting up a game). I would highly recommend installing this on an SSD especially if you want to have the max draw distance and no pop-up- the game splash screen loads up within 5-10 seconds, and the game world itself within 15-20. (I have GTA 4 on the same SSD and this still takes close to a minute to load by comparison).
The game plays amazingly smooth. The quality and detail is immense, breathtakingly immense. It overshadows Watchdogs and its predecessor GTA 4 on the PC!
Rockstar have done an amazing job, and the 18 month wait has been well worth it. Checking my system temps and loads and it was hardly putting a strain on it, even with high action scenes and loads going on at once. I've played the first hour of the story. The game is fluid, facial expressions are amazing as is the surround audio and again, the amount of detail has to be seen to be believed. 1st person view is good, there are a number of settings to play around with- the 10 minutes or so I put it on gives a slight sense of motion sickness, but bobbing/swaying and the such can be turned off- its great Rockstar have though of everything to suit everyone's preference. I haven't gone online yet, nor tried the video editor so I can't comment on this.
That’s all I can really say for the few hours gameplay I got in- there's enough reviews out there of the game itself already that I couldn't add to. I would highly recommend this 10/10 PC port of Grand Theft Auto 5 - just make sure your rig sits between or over the min and recommended spec… and be prepared to end any relationships and quit your job… you're about to become a shut-in immersed in a fantastic game!
