What is Fluxx?
The game starts simply. On your turn, you Draw 1 card from the deck, and Play 1 card from your hand. What is the Goal of the game? Well that's the fun- the other Rules and Goals of the game are cards that you play! So on your turn you might play the Goal card "Milk and Cookies", which states that the player with the "Milk" and "Cookies" cards in play wins the game. But the next person might play "Chocolate Milk", which replaces the old Goal, so now you have to own "Milk" and "Chocolate" in order to win. The rules are always changing, so you have to pay attention. The game keeps going like this, playing new Rules and Goals, until someone has fulfilled a Goal card and wins the game. Anyone old enough to read can play and enjoy a game of Fluxx. And if all these rules get to be too much, there are cards like Rules Reset to get rid of rules and go back to the simple "Draw 1, Play 1" mechanic. It's frantic, fun, and stimulating.
What is Fluxx 5.0?
There have been a few versions of the base game, and more than anything what each version adds is improved rules- which are written directly on the cards as well as having a "Frequently Asked Questions" on the rules sheet. Each set also has improved art on the cards. A few cards are new in each version, but the major difference compared to Version 4 is the removal of "Creepers". Creepers are cards that prevent you from winning the game. Thematically, they work really well with some sets (Zombie Fluxx) but they aren't really appropriate for the base game. Removing them was a smart step, and people who enjoyed those cards can either purchase the old Version 4 or an expansion set that has those cards. For new players or returning players who need a new deck, Fluxx 5.0 is the best ever.
What's the Catch?
The only "bad" part about Fluxx is that it's not a very serious game. The winner is mostly decided by luck- it's entirely possible (although very rare) that you will begin the game with the right combination of cards to win on the first turn. So really, this is meant to be a fun table game just for some laughs, to be played in a few fairly quick rounds. Generally my group of friends will open the evening with a game of Fluxx to get everyone "warmed up" for other games.
This Sounds Complicated...
It's not! Honestly, one experienced player can get a table full of new players into a game in about two minutes. A group of people who have never seen the game before can probably get going in about five minutes- most rules are written on the cards, and there are plenty of clarifications as well as an example game on the rules sheet included in the box. Don't be intimidated!
Fluxx is a quirky, fun, chaotic, smart, card game. This is one of the very few games in the world that really deserves to market itself as making you smarter when you play it. Having to pay attention to the ever-changing rules and constantly adapt to new strategies as you draw new cards gives your brain a workout without ever being too challenging. The game is never much harder than a hand of Poker or Solitaire, and yet you'll soon find yourself amazed that you're negotiating a table covered in new Rules and ever-changing Goals. Fluxx has now become *the* introductory game among my friends, where if we're meeting someone who hasn't played board games with us before, we immediately start a game of Fluxx. Add it to your game night now.
If you are not familiar with Fluxx, there are a lot of versions and themes but this is the one to start with. Gameplay starts off simple. You deal 3 cards to every player and put 1 rule card out which is to draw 1 card and play 1 card. That's how you start. Everything about this game will change. New rules will get played, goals will get played and there are actions and cards known as keepers which are basically the way you hit the goals(most of the time). It is very simple to pick up and a lot of fun. One thing I can say, anyone who says there is no strategy has not played this game for long or is not very good at it. It's harder to strategize until you've played a few hands and get familiar with the various cards. But once you get familiar you can start to plan in advance to attempt a win. And quite frankly have it messed up by another players actions just as easily as you start to plan, but that's all part of the game.
Game time varies. I have seen victories on first turns and have had hands last close to an hour(this is rare though). I have heard of people paying for 2 hours but I have yet to run into that in over a decade of playing. It can be played enjoyably by 2 people but shines in a group. You can technically go above the 5 player limit but the game drags - which might explain some of the 2 hour games people have mentioned.
This version removes the creepers from 4.0. I feel like this is a great change. Creepers have made their way into the other versions of Fluxx and may work great in those, but the base game I feel really suffered because of the addition of creepers. I actually went so far as to either go back to my 3.1 Fluxx version and at one point removed the creeper related cards and added the 3.1 cards into the 4.0 deck to patch out the creepers. I think Looney Labs should consider selling a creeper expansion for the base game to introduce it for those who want it. Creepers nearly killed interest in this game series for me to be honest so not missing them in this version.
One of the strengths of Fluxx for existing owners of previous versions is that they are compatible. If they remove a card that you like, you can usually port it into the existing version. There's been a few action cards that have disappeared and a meta rules card that have made their way into my 5.0 version.
I held out hope that a creeper free version of the base game would return and here it is. I already own two versions of 5.0 and have a child who ordered one of her own. The price is right for a lot of enjoyment. We still played our older versions before this one was released. If you like flux, you will get your moneys worth.
This was my first Fluxx game though I’m going to be getting several of the themed ones as well. I’m a very avid game fan. I enjoy involved strategy games everything from Risk to Catan and Dominion. Fluxx is nothing like those games. But it is absolutely a fun time.
Overall the game is a lot of fun. It is simple and not overly strategic. It is nice to have a game to play that doesn’t require a lot effort and can be played and enjoyed by heavy game fans and non-gamers alike.
The card quality is fine I don’t feel I need to sleeve the cards. The box is sturdy and very small. Making it a quick grab every time I’m packing a suit case, it takes no space and can be played by all.
