What is an unlocked phone? An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan. |
What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier. Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card. Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract. |
How do I set up my unlocked phone? The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination. |

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I bought this phone for my sister and liked it so much I wanted one for myself. I was astounded that I couldn't buy a second one. For me, the solution was easy: have my sister buy one for me using her account. (I kept the first one and set up the second one for her.) So be aware that if you want to buy multiple Amazon-ad versions of this phone, you might be restricted to just one per account.
If you don't want to spend several hundred dollars on a smart phone but want a high quality device that's responsive, feature-rich, but not full of bloat-ware, this phone is ideal.
In no particular order, these are some of the features I really like or am impressed with:
* Long battery life. Particularly when turning off the cell radio when on WiFi (putting it in airplane mode then re-enabling the WiFi), this phone lasts a long time even when using it heavily. I can comfortably use it all day without worrying about the battery dying or having to recharge.
* The phone is really responsive, and even with the 2GB version, it never feels like it's overwhelmed.
* No bloatware. I haven't checked to see if you can delete the Amazon apps, but those are pretty much the only apps that are "bloatish". Lenovo does put their "Moto" app on, which allows you to turn on the fingerprint reader for gestures.
* The G5 Plus runs Nougat, the most recent iteration of the Android operating system, and most others in this price range, and many that are more expensive, still run Marshmallow. So far, I really like Nougat. I briefly considered purchasing the LG phone, but I purchased an LG tablet a bit over a year ago which, while I like it, was never updated from Lollipop to Marshmallow, so I lacked any faith that the phone would be upgraded.
* I love the gesture-enabled fingerprint reader. Placing it on the front of the device increases its utility. I read one professional review of the G5 Plus yesterday that said it was hard to get used to and the reviewer preferred the traditional separate control buttons. (You don't have to enable the gesture feature of the reader if you don't like it.) I'm not a fan of a lot of gesture controls and rarely use them in apps, but I took to the fingerprint reader gestures easily and found them natural and intuitive. Reader gestures consist of: return to home; open cards with previous/recent apps; swipe back to previous screen; open Google search assistant; sleep/turn off the screen. After just a couple hours, the gestures became instinctive. The only two that took a bit longer was distinguishing opening Google and turning off the screen, since I would sometimes accidentally open Google instead of turning off the screen. However, even that took less than a day to master.
* The build quality is excellent. The metal back is very nice. There are a few plastic bits, but most of the body is metal. The screen is smooth and responsive. It's lightweight but sturdy-feeling and fits well even in my smallish hand. The image quality is great with true colors, great brightness, and sharp details.
* The camera takes excellent photos and gives the user a lot of controls for exposure, etc., that used to be only available on much more expensive devices. Even in an almost-dark room, it takes good pictures.
I'd definitely recommend this phone to anyone. If you have a bit more money, get the one with 4GB of RAM, but this one will please you if the 4GB version is out of your price range.
My LG G3 had a more customizable menu bar. You could insert up to 5 icons on the bar, including one that drops down the notification screen without having to reach my thumb to the top of the phone. I do miss that.
The one button nav feature on the fingerprint sensor is pretty cool. I also like the swipe up to shrink screen feature, but unfortunately you can't use both at the same time.
The screen on my G3 was amazing, and this one doesn't measure up in a side by side.
But by itself the Moto screen is pretty good, and it is PAID FOR! The value of this phone can't be overstated. The ads I get are far from annoying. I have clicked on a few. And I REEEEEALLY love not having the Verizon bloatware on their $800 phones
I liked the LG G3 very much, but when it would no longer recognize SIM cards, and I couldn't find anyone to fix it reasonably, I was sick. Sick of the prospect of paying more to fix a 3 year old phone than what this MOTO cost!
Battery life is still awesome.
So end of update! I'll update again if I find something really worth complaining about with this phone.
JUST BUY IT!
I am extremely happy with my purchase. This is my first step away from buying into a Verizon phone and their latest "amazing deal". I'm coming out of an LG G3, and previously Samsung GS3. When the SIM/SD card tray crapped out on the LG, I was NOT getting sucked into another 6, 7, or 8 hundred dollar phone.
This phone is great! Fast as needed. Great screen.
LOVE LOVE the "chop chop" for the flashlight, and the twist for the camera.
I was slightly concerned about getting it hooked up to Verizon, but it was a non-issue. Went into a Verizon Authorized Dealer and laid down $10 for a new SIM card. Guy then proceeded to set it up for me, and ten minutes later I was outta there.
I got it with ads, and they are far from annoying or intrusive. And no Verizon bloatware!
So for the phone, a nice case, a 2 pack of screen protectors, (all 3 orders in one box from Amazon), and the SIM card, I'm all in for approximately $220!!! That's LESS than the insurance deductible on my daughter's friggin iPhone 7 that she hadda have!
Just buy it.
